Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another
I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

That’s great you did 10 miles OYBK! Looks like your recovering at just the right time Smile

How’s your new parkrun going emummy?

No running for two weeks for me. Pretty gutted. Lots of cross training instead, need to download something to watch to cure the boredom!

Limpy 3.5 from Thursday to add

That's such a bugger Buster :(
I'm currently sporting an ice pack and voltarol gel. I'm clearly not there yet, but I'm pretty hopeful that with a weeks taper I should be able to bluff my way through. Bit nervous though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2019 21:24

Thanks emummy!

So best HM week tips please. I'm a novice at this. What do I do?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/03/2019 22:21

Oh I need some HM tips too, mines 7 weeks tomorrow. I'm currently doing my long run about 15k so My plan is to push that to 20 by the end of March, then taper back down. My nutrition has gone completely awol though, i can't get my balance of calories right, then I'm eating rubbish- rather than just increasing 'good' calories, so I really need to work on that.

Annoyingly, we have a 5*, all expenses fabulous weekend away in Italy two weeks before the HM so any plans to not drink and to eat well and to do my last longish run will have to be suspended for that.

What's everyone's views on these ultra hike/marathons? My sil is doing one, it's 100k in 2 days and to be honest, it sounds grim. And costs £600 to enter! It's not my sport, as in, it's not running- so in the same way as I wouldn't enter a swimming race or a tennis tournament,- but honestly, I think it's quite silly to attempt it with very little training.

emummy · 10/03/2019 10:04

Lovely run on country roads this morning, surprised a lot of pheasants! Legs felt strong which was great.
The parkrun is going great Buster, thank you! We've done 5 now, no major disasters and I survived my first stint as RD.
Half marathon tips, hmm. The last week my runs are usually short at steady or easy pace with some sprints at the end and my lastcrun is usually Thursday for a Sunday race. I rehearse the day in my head to make sure I remember everything I need and have my breakfast stuff etc. I usually have a sweet potato the night before, don't know how much that helps! And always try to turn up about an hour before hand as I hate to feel rushed. My half in 2 weeks is out in countryside so getting there might involve being held up by tractors so I'll leave in plenty of time. Best tip is to enjoy it! Races are a reward for all the training you've done so smile and have fun!
A huge long hike on no training sounds like a very bad plan! Blisters galore I think! Good luck to your sister bear.

Last long run on Sunday before my half in a couple of weeks. That wind is a killer at the moment- hoping it dies down soon.
I’m not sure what tips I have as I tend to go with the flow.
Leading up to it I would agree with not overdoing it, you will always feel like you haven’t done enough training but you will have. On the day get there early (especially for toilet location) and don’t do anything really different in terms of pace and nutrition. The only thing I do differently to a normal run is carry a bottle of water with me. The nerves of the day give me a dry mouth and I find that having some water to hand just helps. Not sure if any of that helps

Thanks for the tips!

Daisydoesnt · 12/03/2019 19:23

IRun4Me do you mind me asking if your HM is in the south? I am doing my first HM - Yeovil - two weeks this Sunday. I'm starting to feel very excited!

I had a tooth abscess last week which culminated in the tooth being drilled on Friday evening. I only managed 1 run last week (hills, on Wednesday) as I was full of infection, so this week is my last week of proper training. I'm feeling a bit cheesed off to have missed the training, especially last week's long run, but I suppose in the scheme of things it won't really make that much difference.

Like you IRun4Me it's the wind I can't bear more than anything! I'm praying for a still day.

Good luck to all those doing HMs in the next few weeks.

TriSkiRun99 · 12/03/2019 20:55

Had a good long run on Monday nice 10.5m the wind was dropping off as I was running so by the time I turned around it wasn’t too bad. And the v.dark black clouds didn’t hail on me. Yah!

I’ve only done 3 Half’s but the key for me was fuelling. I make myself eat a snack bar at the halfway point even if I don’t fancy it or I crash at the 10m point. Gd luck to those running soon.

Good luck in Yeovil Daisy; my half is on the same day a wee bit further north, in Inverurie in Aberdeenshire!

IRun4Me · 14/03/2019 06:57

My half is in London a week on Sunday. Combining it with a family weekend away so need to remember to not over do it on the Saturday Grin
Hope the tooth is better Daisy

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2019 09:05

Sorry about your silly tooth daisy.

emummy · 14/03/2019 11:04

Lovely run in the forest with dog this morning, feeling really strong up the hills - hope that lasts, my half is not flat!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2019 11:47

I am not looking forward to this afternoons run. That wind is freezibg and absolutely howling.

Daisydoesnt · 14/03/2019 20:06

Thanks all for the good wishes on the tooth (didn't find any pennies under my pillow).

I am feeling very chuffed as I did that local 5km race again last night and I beat my PB again - now down to 26.56. I am so surprised mainly because it was blowing a hooley last night, and also because I missed two runs at the end of last week due to said tooth. Not sure what that goes to show, but - well! Perhaps I'm not as bad as I thought I was.

Just to bring me down to earth, the runner in front of me last night who I was desperately trying to stay in touch with - and failed - was in the 65+ age category (so that's 20 years older than me). She ran 26.14 Shock just wow, how impressive is that?!!

IRun4Me · 16/03/2019 11:32

Just a shortish run in the strong wind - the outward leg was like running in to a wind tunnel then the homeward leg I had to slow myself down!!
Just remember Daisy she is probably retired and able to commit to her running and doesn’t have to run around after family whilst balancing work etc (well that is what I would tell myself Wink Grin)

Did our new parkrun for the first time after volunteering every week. Ran with dh, it was great despite being 2 degrees and wet! Also managed to sprint past him on the line!

TriSkiRun99 · 16/03/2019 15:02

Thats mega fast times daisy I always feel Shock when I’m at ParkRun with lots of older ladies passing me.
Well done on the sprint emummy I could never catch my DH his ParkRun Pb is 20.01. Yes he was peed at the 1sec Grin

Mega windy 40-50mph gusts on ParkRun today but i took it steady and only 2mins slower than my PB. Face covered in sand though at the end! Ran 1km to start so 7km in total. I’ll be glad when the wind eases off it’s just so brutal here by the coast.

Love reading over all your posts. I find it very motivating.

I'm preparing for my next HM. 6 (?) weeks to go so still very achievable. I'm struggling a bit to find time and energy for long runs. Did 6 miles yesterday in snow, sleet and wind and my legs are sore today. And of course today, when I don't have opportunity to run, is beautiful and sunny Hmm

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/03/2019 08:40

Bursars mines in 6 weeks too. I have done 20k a fair while ago but I intended to try and do it again before my HM, ideally before the end of March. But like you I'm struggling to get out for long runs in the cold and rain! Hopefully the forecast for this week is a bit brighter

Daisydoesnt · 17/03/2019 09:26

It's the wind isn't it, it's the bane of all us runners!!? I find myself running tight up next to the hedge/ buildings to try and get out of the wind, not that you can do the TriSki being on the coast!!

I have my last proper long run later this morning before my HM in a fortnight. My husband is going to drop me off up the road as I have managed to find a 21km route that avoids the busy main roads (I run on the lanes here, as we are out in the sticks). It won't be quite as hilly as the HM course, but I would like to know I can manage the distance.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/03/2019 12:35

Yes daisy, we're having really strong gusty wind here and it just makes it all seem rather a chore! Bring on some settled weather!

Daisydoesnt · 17/03/2019 13:31

I'm back from my final long run - goodness I'm absolutely shattered. My legs feel like they belong to someone else. I did the 21km in 2.06.40 which I'm very pleased with, considering that's my first ever attempt and I was buffeted around by the bloody wind!!

I'm planning on spending the rest of the afternoon on the sofa eating Grin And I'm having pizza for dinner

emummy · 17/03/2019 16:25

Well done Daisy! I've just done mine, beautiful sunshine for 20 minutes, pouring rain for 5, repeated over & over! With a headwind on the uphills. I do hope this wind goes away, my half next week is continuously uphill from 4 to 8 miles, I don't need a wind as well! Enjoy that pizza, you've earned it!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/03/2019 07:57

We can add another 16 miles to the total. 13.1 of which done yesterday. I did it. Grin 2:15 in the flipping wind. Very pleased.

2:06 is an amazing time!

I'm so tired this morning! Had to literally crawl up the stairs with my breakfast. Can't wait til I can run again.
