Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another
I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

I just had to post as this morning I ran my "hilly" 6km route in 36mins, knocking just over 2 mins off my PB. I am so excited!! I am going to do an interval session on Wednesday (my first one) and then I'm going to do my 2nd Parkrun on Saturday and see if I can't improve my time. I am SO loving feeling fit, and seeing these improvements! I totally get why people get addicted to running now Smile

RocketPockets · 24/09/2018 14:36

Thank you averagebear that's actually really helpful as I am slightly restricted with time!

I'm glad it was helpful Irvina I feel I've become a bit of a running bore myself. I have a few friends at work and strava is very useful so I don't bore too many people!!

Wow stegosaurus that's awesome! We are going to start trying for #2 next year and I hope I'm able to continue running. It sounds like you're doing fab.

Well done daisy that's such a good time! I did 3.1m this morning slower time as doing race pace at the moment but feeling good Smile

Easy 4 and Strides from me yesterday. I have another half coming up in October, I don’t feel as fit or fast as I’d like to be but hey ho!

442.5

emummy · 25/09/2018 11:00

Well done Daisy! Good luck at park run.
stegosaurus I am so impressed! I know you will have lost some fitness, but obviously you had to play it safe with the baby. I hope you are able to enjoy your running through the rest of your pregnancy.
Intervals this morning round our athletics track - nothing fancy, it's a grass track in a field!

oh heck I got out of bed yesterday and my left heel felt a bit stiff. I am so worried that this might be the start on an achilles problem, which I had about 5 years ago. I was going to try and ice it later (and tomorrow, if I do manage to run). I always warm up by walking before running, & stretch afterwards; any other words of wisdom for me? I also do yoga twice a week. I am wondering whether I should stop running for a bit which is an awful, depressing thought. It hasn't hurt/ bothered me whilst out running, but was a bit stiff this morning.

Daisydoesnt · 25/09/2018 13:52

that was meant to be got out of bed this morning, not yesterday.

BusterTheBulldog · 25/09/2018 13:55

I find standing on a step and letting my heels drop back and lifting up and down helps that one daisy. Or staying on the floor and lifting up one leg, and then lifting up and down from the other foot on the ground.

I would do another run and see how it felt, maybe pick a route where you can get home easily if it does feel off?

stegosauruslady · 25/09/2018 14:17

Lovely (short!) morning run this morning. It was bloody freezing though. I'm going to steal DP's (never used!) long sleeve running tops to cover the bump...none of my base layer stuff fits any more.

Thanks emummy! I've lost a LOT of fitness, but it feels so so good to be running again.

Daisydoesnt · 25/09/2018 15:42

Thank you Buster I shall try that!

emummy · 25/09/2018 16:30

You could also try some dynamic stretches before running Daisy. I walk on my heels, then on my toes, then rolling from heel though to toe, as well as some other stretches pre-run - not static ones though, I do those post- run like you.

Daisydoesnt · 25/09/2018 17:10

Thank you emummy I wil try those too. I think I might try to do a gentle run tomorrow and see what it’s like (unless I get up and it’s worse).

AuntieStella · 26/09/2018 08:00

I have a bit of a cold, so am being sensible and not running today

I'll be doing a fitness session tomorrow and then intend to run Fri (30 mins or so easy just to check I'm Ok amd can breathe through the snot), Saturday (Parkrun sandwich) and Sun (10k event - a hilly one)

In case that all goes wrong, I'll update the total now:

453.2

I was thinking about doing REDJanuary next year, but apart from one slightly mad one-week streak on holiday I've never run every day. There's a fairly flat 1.8 mile loop round a nearby park, so I suspect the any to increase number of days would be add an easy jog round that on what would otherwise be rest days. And/or jog a commute.

BusterTheBulldog · 26/09/2018 09:29

Club run from me last night, a new route with only 1 hill! Was super pleased!

I might try and do RED Jan too AuntieStella, I know some people who do that the whole year but it’s unsustainable for me! I plan to do a 30k race in Feb so jan is a key training month.

459.7

stegosauruslady · 26/09/2018 10:37

I'm full of cold too, but happily, its a planned rest day anyway. I'm aiming to run two days on, one day off at the moment.

I won't be joining RED Jan, as I'm due on the 10th! I might do RED December though...although by that point it may be more like a quick waddle!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/09/2018 11:53

I started running by doing red January this year, and even then only to support my friend. I never in a million years expected to love it so much!

OhNoGroken · 26/09/2018 12:14

Hello, can I join? I’ve recently started running and I’d love some general support and encouragement!

Working in time around two young kids with no family available for childcare has been my biggest drawback so far but I’m figuring out ways around it.

Running total for sept so far for sept is a meagre 46km! I can’t believe how far some of you have run!

Daisydoesnt · 26/09/2018 12:49

Hello OhNoGroken I'm a relative newbie here too - I'm definitely not doing some of the epic distances you'll see on this thread!
I have had a really good morning though - I read some old threads last night (in particular one about tight calf muscles) and picked up an additional tip about rollering. I'd forgotten I do have a roller, chucked in the back of the wardrobe. So I rolled both legs last night in front of the TV, and this morning my calf/ achilles feels 100% fine - no stiffness of discomfort whatsoever.
So, so relieved and very grateful for the tips & advice. I am hoping if I look after myself properly I can keep that niggle at bay Grin

emummy · 26/09/2018 13:04

Welcome OhNo! All distances are accepted! My mileage has dropped right down recently as I am training for a 5k, having done a marathon earlier in the year. It's lovely, I'm so much less tired.
Foam rollers are great Daisy, glad your heel is feeling better. I use mine every night if I have run that day. The occasional sports massage is great too but much more painful!

AuntieStella · 26/09/2018 13:16

OhNo

I thought that when I first joined a thread - all those ultra runners and me a low mileage beginner! It's in miles, but it's the cumulative total for the month for everyone on the thread. So in my previous post, I added my 4.2 miles from Monday to the previous total to get the 453.2

Current total is 459.7, so with your 46km/28.6miles, the new total is

488.3

FATEdestiny · 26/09/2018 13:47

Thanks for all the suggestions about my sore shoulder after my HM at the weekend. Having analysed my upper body positioning during this week's runs, I think I push my shoulders back too much. I run like Michael Jordan - very upright and almost lean back. My shoulders felt more comfortable if I lean them (and my body) forward more.

I also think I have tense hands. It doesn't seem to matter what position my hands are, they end up tense. I'm either pushing my thumb down onto my forefinger, or gripping my fingers around my thumb too tight, or pushing my fingernails into my palm.

What hand shape do you all run with?

Did 10km in under 62 minutes this morning. That's a PB and I wasn't even pushing myself. I definately think I could do a sub-60 time now, if I pushed for it.

FATEdestiny · 26/09/2018 13:49

Is RED January etc Run Every Day?

Just guessing, it's a new acronym on me. In which case I RED all the time. I've run every day from starting C25K back in April. I love, love, LOVE my daily morning run.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/09/2018 13:59

Fate I’ve been thinking about my hands recently, as I get a bit of wrist cramp on long runs which must be as a result of holding them rigid for so long. If I’m really going for it and if I’m really focussing, I seem to make a little scoop shape, except if I’m doing a steep hill where I seem to naturally switch to a sort of ‘milking a cow’ motion, which seems to coincide with my steps changing as well to smaller steps on the backs of my feet rather than big strides. I seem to naturally do this to preserve my knees?

I’m feeling ill this week, I feel like I have swollen glands in my neck and stomach/diaphragm area but haven’t really Come down with any further symptoms- maybe this is just my body fighting it. I did a quick 5.5k today and yesterday, and I’m still hoping to do my long run on Friday, so will rest tomorrow. My total km for September will be lower than the last few months, despite doing my longest distances to date.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/09/2018 14:01

And yes, it’s Run Every Day, I think it’s a charity initiative for a mental health charity. I’ve not missed more than 1 day in a row since January, but I haven’t run every day!

AuntieStella · 26/09/2018 14:08

Yes, RED = Running Every Day, but the acronym caught on big time this January as there was a big charity virtual event for it 'Beat the blues in January, get RED'. It's a charity event, for MIND, and if you register early enough you get a tshirt and everyone gets a medal. Fundraising on top of entry fee is not required.

They say more info for 2019 at 'the end of the summer' so it shouid be any time now

BusterTheBulldog · 26/09/2018 15:00

Don’t get me started on hand / arms fate. My husband says I look like a dalek when I run! I try and make a conscious effort to shake out my hands and arms every 10 mins or so which helps I think. I also find when I’m having fun running I naturally become looser, however a lot of the time I’m concentrating and overthinking so not much help. If I am holding anything (tissue, bottle) I’ll grip it like I’m holding on to Everest so I try and minimise that too.
