Hi lovelies! I was just about to join the running thread and saw it was almost full and couldn’t find another
I’ve copied below from the last thread and I hope you don’t mind me joining you all!

This is the 12th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 10.2 for September

Best wishes

I really hope you can get it sorted soon.
Shorter interval session for me this morning, felt good.

hello runners I dropped off the thread a few weeks ago. I had a niggle in the outside of my knee and took a week off running, and to be honest I was so fed up with it I couldn't bear to read the thread!! Anyway, a week's rest & a thumbs up from the physio, I got back into training and have since knocked over a minute off my 5km and 10km PBs (and yay!!!! 58.40 for 10km so finally got that longed for sub-1hr). I think the rest actually did me good.

My first HM is four weeks this weekend, so I'm really concentrating on my long runs on a Friday, and trying to fit in a good session up some hills each week (the HM course is quite hilly).

And I'm still relying on the fruit pastilles to keep my going when I get leg weary!!

Looking through a few pages that I've missed, I'm embarrassed to admit that I get a terribly runny nose out running but yes blow it into my fingers. I know it's gross but tissues, really?!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2019 11:47

Well done Daisy!

My physio hasn't got back to me yet, but I thought I'd keep going with his advice anyway. I did 8 steady miles today. Sore but not the agony of two days ago. It was a plodding pace. I didn't bother with fuelling up, jelly babies, water or tissues, I thought I'd sneak up on the run and surprise it.

He has me doing a LR of 9 miles next Friday, then it's just over a week after that to my HM (I won't name which one, I like to pretend that I can't be outed Wink ) So much for my taper!

So in terms of just an 8 day taper and quite a few weeks off running, so that my VO2 max has gone poof, what exactly do I do during that last week or so?

TriSkiRun99 · 01/03/2019 21:15

If your struggling OBK why do the LR 9m a week before your half? Id listen to your body as you know it best. I only did one midweek 5k before my HM and was really ready for a run by the time I’d got to the Sunday Smile my legs were all springy. Good luck with what ever works for you.

Swim for me today, but a 10k Wed night and 5K thurs lunchtime meant I hit my 100k target for Feb. Off to ParkRun tom.

TriSkiRun99 · 01/03/2019 21:19

Well done on a great PB daisy my latest fav fuel is dextrose tablets they just melt and don’t leave that clingy after taste like jelly babies.

DH stagged through the door tonight after running home from work a hilly 21m with horrid blister on the bottom of his foot Sad really felt for him as he’d done 9m with it rubbing then he had a Epsom Salt ouch!! Braver than me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2019 21:38

I'm not quite sure TriSki other than I've totally lost my fitness and have only done one LR since January. I had three weeks of no running at all.

Daisydoesnt · 02/03/2019 07:48

OBK I love the idea of sneaking up on your run and surprising it!

I am following a programme copied from Runners World for my HM, and I can see that it has me tapering down in the last two weeks. Other than feeling fresh & not having tired legs, what is the actually technical theory behind tapering? I don't understand why you don't lose fitness, because 2 weeks is quite a long time to scale back?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/03/2019 08:25

Maybe for my last 'LR' I'll stick with the original plan which was 10k at race pace.

IRun4Me · 02/03/2019 15:31

Really lovely run this morning, I drove a few miles to get to a nicer route. Wanted to do 10 but ended up doing 12. Was one of those good run days Smile
A couple of short runs to add on aswell
373.4

TriSkiRun99 · 02/03/2019 16:10

daisy I did a 10m run 2 weeks before my Half, then a easy 6m a week before and I was really itching for a long run by HM day Smile no idea on the theory but it’s worked for me twice.... I started googling Marathon training plans today 🙈I really want to do one but don’t like running Jun-Sept it’s too warm for me - I tend to cycle more, and I’ve realised I will need to considerably increase my weekly mileage not just my long run to get run fit. So probably need to look at a Jan-Mar one, which then increases likelihood of winter bugs getting in the way Hmm plus I really need to lose 2 stone to reduce the weight on my joints.

emummy · 03/03/2019 20:07

Longest run before my half today, lovely run but very hilly and some tummy troubles!
I love the taper! The idea I think is to be sure you have plenty of energy for the race and to allow muscle recovery. Your muscles get stronger in the recovery phase. Also maybe psychologically you're keen to race after doing less running? I like it anyway, especially in marathon training when it's lovely to 'only' have to run 10 or 12 miles!

I've just stumbled across this thread. I hoped it'd be ok to ask a question of all you brilliant runners?

I've just restarted running after a decade and am suffering terribly from shin splints.

Any ideas / suggestions?
I've bought some new cushioned Asics but not sure what else to try.

TIA.

TriSkiRun99 · 04/03/2019 11:21

Stretches and rest and run slower & frozen peas on his shins, where all the things my DH did when he had shin splints from running too fast too early in his training. He had to rest for alot so cycled more which didn’t aggravate them. I’ve not suffered ...so far. He’s since got upto running 20m+ and not suffered again.

meladeso · 04/03/2019 11:24

@TriSkiRun99 Thanks- that's helpful. Any stretches in particular do you know?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/03/2019 13:45

In my experience, rest is the best way for shin splints. It's usually caused by going to fast too soon, or even just too fast compared with 'normal' for you, and they get worse if you don't rest up. I've only had them a few times but they really do make running painful.

emummy · 05/03/2019 11:17

Tempo run today in beautiful sunshine, though quite chilly.

BusterTheBulldog · 05/03/2019 14:44

No real running still for me Sad 2 as a test on sat and 4 on sun. Had to miss my planned half on Sunday, pretty gutted. More physio today and it is getting better, just slooooowly. We’ve worked out I have weak glutes and quads and my hip abductors / piriformis were then taking up the slack and causing the nerve to get trapped and now currently irritated. I see that physio more than I see my husband at the mo!

meladeso, I think slow down and rebuild your distance gradually. Rest but not too much, try some walk / running too maybe.

How are you doing ohyoubadkitten, I followed your example and sneaked up on my test run, no music, no tissues just out trainers on and left house before I could think about it too much!

IRun4Me · 06/03/2019 08:58

I love the idea of sneaking up on a run that has made me giggle.
Back to the conversation a while ago about running gear- particularly leggings. I recently bought some ASICS ones in the sale. They are fab- so comfy, good high level waist and a drawstring 👍

TriSkiRun99 · 06/03/2019 21:13

Hope the improvement slowly gets there buster I’ve had long running issues with sciatica nerve pain and discs that like to randomly bugle every few years. Strengthening my glutes, hips and core has definitely helped. Cycling can be really good if you get your seat and handle bars in a comfy position as I find it losen my scrailiata joint (sorry can’t spelt that but the hip joint bit that mine gets stuck sometimes). I’ve had years or chiro & physio & massage over the years to try maintain movement and manage flare ups. Running which everyone said wouldn’t be good for me ironically has Smile so I keep going whilst I can!

Windy 10k tonight whilst DD at her club. I kept going as I didn’t want to get too cold waiting for her to come out Grin

BusterTheBulldog · 06/03/2019 22:10

Thank you Tri my husband suffers from bulging discs too, we’re a right pair!

It’s good to hear from someone who has managed it. I cannot afford to invest in a new sport but I am doing more spinning at the gym, it doesn’t hurt so that is a bonus! I’ve had acupuncture before and I think I need some of that again.

5 miles yest and 2.5 today. None were very comfortable 😬

My 7.5 plus tri’s 6.3 gives

42.8

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/03/2019 22:15

Well done Buster. I'm sorry about your half though :(
I'm sore, but less than I was, another 6 miles today and I don't feel too bad, though my time was really slow.

Running has definitely helped my SI joint issues. No idea why.

emummy · 07/03/2019 11:00

Steady run in horrible cold wind & rain.

48.8

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2019 13:42

Why can't I rember if we are adding km or miles?
10 mile LR today. A bit off my half pace and my last one before my half. I'm still sore but manageable. Feeling pretty chuffed with myself for doing it as I'd not experienced jelly legs in my running before, so I got to practice running through it.

emummy · 09/03/2019 07:33

Lovely sunny morning, quick run before barcode scanning duty.
It's miles kitten so I'll add yours

TriSkiRun99 · 09/03/2019 10:56

Ran 5k yesterday and a ParkRun sandwich 8k today but super windy with free salt& sand facial for 2.5k this morning Grin I’m still red faced now despite shower & moisturiser!

Add my 8m total 70
