London Marathoners 2018

Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

Don't worry - you won't actually fall off I promise!! :-) there's a Hill of Doom near me. One where you wouldn't get up in a car in anything higher than 2nd gear. It's evil. Going to attempt to do hills on that. 40 seconds up, back down, back up for 40 second and repeat several times.

There was an article I read that said getting a huge number of miles under your belt isn't the most important bit of training (although miles are important off course) but making your non-long runs count was v important too. So to do one hill run a week and another threshold run (8-8.5/10 effort)

This is the article womensrunninguk.co.uk/training/time-efficient-marathon-training/

I'm currently running 3 times a week and doing one spin class a week and a couple of weight sessions at the gym (after a treadmill run) I'll probably add in another run after the New Year.

I'm doing 3 runs a week, and a Jillian Michaels work out once a week. 4.5 miles on the plan tomorrow, which I hope to get outside to do.

farine · 08/11/2017 15:55

Another london marathoner here. Did it this year in 4:47 and hoping to better that in 2018. Been out with nasty injury for a while so only just getting back into it.

Just started to use a heart monitor to help me understand threshold and tempo and easy efforts as I think my failure to understand that meant I wasted a lot of mileage training wrong last time!

LoudestRoar · 08/11/2017 18:18

Hi farine any tips for newbies please?

farine · 08/11/2017 19:49

I still think of myself as a newbie to be honest! But from my experience and what I did / didn't do I would say:
Make a plan and stick to it. Don't overload the programme and don't think you need to be running 10 miles on a long run right now. Build the base fitness and endurance up first

Make sure you are doing the interval and hill sessions - they don't need to be long sessions but you do need to do them to build speed and stamina

Cross train and strengthen and condition (weights and stretching) to build the muscles evenly.

Stretch stretch stretch stretch stretch stretch

Not doing London as didn't get a place but I am doing Manchester the week before so can I join?

Am up to long run of 14 miles in 2 hours 12... this is my first marathon but have done a few halfs this year.

Slightly terrified at the distance and I felt shocking after 14!

PickleSarnie · 09/11/2017 20:24

Hi farine and Cake!

I need to figure out my tempo and easy runs using my Garmin. It's a pretty cool one the forerunner 235 and has inbuilt 2heartrate monitor. But I've never used most of the features. I tend to use "can run and talk, can run and can't talk, can run but want to puke" as my levels at the moment!

Well done on the 14 miles cake, I'm aiming for 8-9 this weekend. Went to circuits class tonight though and both my knees are killing me which is weird. So might postpone tomorrow's run which is frustrating.

I'm just havingsome pumpkin spice porridge for breakfast as fuel, then after the school run, I'm taking 15 month old ds out in the buggy for my 4.5 mile run. I did it on Tuesday, and found it hard, so will see how I do. I'd like to beat my 1.07 time for this buggy run. Looking forward to Sunday, when I can go out solo.
Looking at my plan, the most I need to run during the week is 8.5 miles. I reckon I can do these as buggy runs while my eldest is at school. It then frees up the evenings, and I don't have to run in the dark. It helps with my mindset as well, as I'm in a much better mood if I get my run done and out the way with in the morning, rather than thinking of it all day.

Hello everyone!

My training is back on after a dodgy chest plus weekend away Smile

This week I have... done a strength routine at home, a LSR of 8.5, an hour of Pilates last night. Tomorrow is a new parkrun and Sunday is approx 4 miles with friend who is getting back into running. Busy week!

I’ve ordered wipe-clean calendar for the fridge so I can map out my monthly plan for all to see. It will hopefully make it easier to coordinate with DH when I need him to look after DS.

Oh! And I did a 10k time trial on a flat route on Sunday and my time was slightly under 53 minutes I was absolutely delighted!

ThursdayLastWeek · 10/11/2017 21:02

Sorry, that was ALL about me

Loudest I’m very impressed with the buggy running. Does it make running alone seem easier?

Pickle I love my 235 - I find it easy to watch my pace. I alsways forget to stop it after Pilates though so it measures the 20 minute drive home too Grin

Hello farine. I’ve made firm friends with my foam roller this last few weeks and it makes such a difference! Stretch stretch and stretch again! Well done for your time, and sorry for your injury.

Hi tea! Well done on your HMs. Excellent base on which to build!

Eilidh127 · 10/11/2017 22:13

Hi! I'm doing my first marathon next April( not London unfortunately), so hope it's ok to join you😄... Been running for 18 months or so and done 3 halves, but terrified already about the prospect of 26 miles😧 I'm wondering about carrying on with my routine or following a rigid training plan? Ive been running about 40- 50 miles a week for the last 6 months or so -mainly because I love very slow ploddy long runs but do try to do some intervals or hill reps when I'm feeling strong... Really looking forward to picking up some good tips and tricks along the way😀😀

LoudestRoar · 11/11/2017 06:26

thursday sounds like you're doing amazing! And 10k in under an hour is something I can only dream of, I'm lucky to get 7k in that time.
I find the buggy running really hard. DS is 2 2lb, so it's hard going. I ended up giving up yesterday 1 mile in, as it was so windy, and it wasn't fair on him. It's a shame, as the most I need to run during the week is 8 miles, so it would be nice to get them done while my eldest is in school.
I ended up redoing my 4.5 miles on the treatreadmill last night, as I couldn't face going out again. Boring, but it was done. I should start doing some cross training, but I'm so tired on my rest days, especially with a baby who likes to wake in the night and early morning
Eilidh127 Welcome! What marathon are you doing? I'm doingmy first halfat Worthing in Feb.

LoudestRoar · 11/11/2017 06:28

Eilidh127 I'm no expert, but as it's your first marathon, I'd be tempted to use a plan. My Asics is great, as it looks at your furthest run and time, and works out your plan from there.

Eilidh127 · 11/11/2017 08:04

Hi!
LoudestRoar, thank you😄 I'm in awe of all of you training with babies and little ones- buggy running sounds like a huge workout! I'll look at the Asics plan- thank you😀 The few I had a glance at either seemed for complete beginners or experienced marathoners so that one sounds good... I'm doing a very small local one in April- its apparently very quiet and lonely round the country roads so I'll have to conjure up images of crowd support and live music etc😂😂!

LoudestRoar · 11/11/2017 08:15

Don't be in awe at me, I'm super slow Grin I'm not sure my plan of going from no running to a marathon is a good idea, but we will see. I feel a bit of a fraud to be honest Grin
You'll be great though I'm sure. The only thing seeing me through at the moment is once I've done it, I never have to do it again, which seems to help..

ThursdayLastWeek · 11/11/2017 15:25

I had a great parkrun this morning. It’s a new one and turned out to be much faster than my usual. Grin

ThursdayLastWeek · 12/11/2017 09:23

Oh my goodness, all I had was a few ciders last night and I am so hungover this morning! I hope my friend doesn’t want to go fast when I meet her shortly!

PickleSarnie · 12/11/2017 10:13

Welcome Eilidh!

I've left my Garmin on once on the drive home Thursday after running round the reservoir. I will never ever be able to be my top speed of 60mph in any of my training runs now! :-)

Hope your hangover goes soon. I had a three day hangover the other week. I don't drink hardly at all anymore so I die when I do!

I did an hour on the treadmill this morning. Wasn't as long as was supposed to do but didn't want to push my knees. But, touch wood, they seem fine.

OP posts:
LoudestRoar · 12/11/2017 12:22

I did 4.5 miles this morning. When I got home, 5 year old ds asked to go out, so I did another mile. I'm shattered, and off for a post run fry up! I need to do something about my diet. I was doing slimming world, but couldn't have what I fancied after running, so I've stopped for now and will re visit after the marathon. However, I do need to stop eating crap!

teaandcakeat8 · 12/11/2017 12:59

Just 15 miles in 2 hours and 20 minutes... Found it very hard going in the cold and wind!

LoudestRoar · 12/11/2017 13:23

Just 15 tea?! That's amazing and a brilliant time.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 12/11/2017 13:39

Can I join you? I've been following your thread. I started running in January and signed up to a 1/2 marathon in September which seemed an impossible challenge but now I've done 4 and reduced my time to 2 hours (and lost 3 stone along the way) I've just signed up to the Brighton marathon and am now getting big doubts as i have no running friends so could do with some motivation! I did 16.5 mile run last weekend and felt like hell afterwards

teaandcakeat8 · 12/11/2017 15:11

I meant *just did 15!

I am definitely not being blasé about it...

farine · 12/11/2017 15:20

How did everyone's long runs go this morning. I did 6 miles and after the first two miles which I always find horrible it was ok. Really tired and sore though as also did a hard 5 miles yesterday. Just had a lovely snooze in bed and off for a deep tissue massage now to help prevent injuries! Wish I'd booked for a lovely aromatherapy one - can't remember the last time a massage was relaxing 😬😬

farine · 12/11/2017 15:22

Posted a bit too soon.

Was also going to ask about diet. I seriously need to lose 1-1.5 stone to get back to where I was at this year's marathon.

Yes, I really do put on weight that quickly and easily!

My challenge is how do I cut back on calories and carbs when I'm training five days a week?
