Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

Can I join? My friend and I had booked Brighton as a back up. We didn't tell anyone as our club has a ballot for club places in VMLM. I was one of the lucky ones and got a place this year. It will be my 1st marathon and have run just 1 half race before. Have run the distance a bit.

I am currently getting my fitness back up but need to lose 10kg I think. Also my foot has been a bit sore so trying to not get anxious. Have only run 5 mile this week. Usually run between 10-20 miles a week.

PickleSarnie · 12/11/2017 18:30

Bloody hell cake - 15 miles is awesome!

Welcome purple Hope your foot improves. My knees are giving me gip and it's stressing me out. It was the reason I had to pull out last year and I'm scared it's going to happen again. Also, selfishly, we are going skiing in March so don't want to not be able to ski if I totally kaput the knees!

16.5 miles toddlertantrum?! Well done! The longest I've done is 13 miles. Can imagine doubling it!! And well done on the weight loss.

Have you had a deep tissue massage before farine? I was thinking about it. My muscles are so tight (and not in a good - rock hard abs - type way!) that I'm sure they're contributing to my knees. Have been foam rolling daily which is hopefully helping.

I also need to lose weight. Probably at least a stone. Have lost about stone and a half so far so things going in right direction - Christmas isn't going to help matters though!!!

I’m using my foam roller before and after a run if necessary ... tight quads!

farine I also aiming to lose a stone or so.... before my real training actually starts

ThursdayLastWeek · 12/11/2017 19:41

Hello purple sounds like you’ve got loads of experience!

Well done everyine in the real long runs today. It’s was a good day for it down here, if a little windy!

I got over my hangover enough to run a very muddy 4 trail miles with my friend. It was our first run together in ages and I really enjoyed it. She’s been off running for a while so it was slower than I would normally run but that was probably a good thing.

I’m getting very well acquainted with my foam roller. It makes such a difference to my receivers after a long run.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 12/11/2017 20:27

Managed 9.5 miles in the pitch black with my head torch tonight. It's so cold and windy here. I ran a big circle but felt like I ran into the wind the whole way round. 1 hr 29 but feel pooped.

farine · 12/11/2017 21:14

Deep tissue massage didn't turn out to be deep tissue at all. Was going to interpret and explain I booked a deep tissue one but thought 'what the hell, I've 7 months of pain ahead, may as well enjoy a normal massage for once'. Have been stretching and rolling all evening to compensate!

Any tips on dieting when trying to train welcomed...

Eilidh127 · 13/11/2017 14:50

Running plus freezing temps equals raging appetite I find! I'm interested in not piling on the pounds, Farine, too... I've been reading some stuff about increasing protein and fats and I do think that if I've had lots of eggs and full fat yoghurt etc, that helps fill me up( doesn't stop the craving for a whopping Danish pastry tho after a long run!)

Eilidh127 · 13/11/2017 14:54

Oh and really thick chunky soups with loads of pulses seem to fill me up too- perfect for warming up too😄

LoudestRoar · 13/11/2017 15:55

Can I ask what you all wear when it's cold please? Was frozen during my run yesterday, especially my hands and head. Think I'd look silly doing my run in my woollen hat though!

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/11/2017 16:02

I’m in Cornwall so I rarely need to run even in a frost (the occasional parkrun the exception). I just wear full leggings, and a slightly thicker long sleeved top. I get very uncomfortable wearing many layers and can’t bear to wear a hat or gloves so prefer one thicker layer. A buff is a useful thing to have as it can be scarf, head scarf or sweat band!

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/11/2017 16:10

Nike top

I have something similar to that but in a very garish hi vis yellow

Eilidh127 · 13/11/2017 16:17

I've been wearing a long sleeved running top under a thin fleece top which I usually end up wearing round my waist... Fleece headband as I hate cold ears and high viz gloves. So much quicker to get outside for a run in summer!

PickleSarnie · 13/11/2017 17:25

When it's really cold (last winter) I wore gloves a few times. Then cursed the damn gloves after 15 minutes when my hands got too hot and I ran with them stuffed into my leggings. I'm not a hat lover either so have a wide headband that I can pull over ears.

I definitely prefer being too cold at the start to getting too warm for the rest of the run.

I’m a right sweaty Betty so rarely get too cold during a run. I have a pair of thermal leggings I use in December and January with a long sleeved but light weight top and that does me well.

During evening runs I have a bright yellow reflective jacket I wear with flashing lights and everything- paranoid someone won’t see me otherwise! But I find I have to only have a bra on underneath otherwise I swelter.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 14/11/2017 19:38

I can't stand being too hot so I wear shorts and a base layer as a top which covers my hands of its super cold. If I wear anything more I end up getting fed up and peeling layers off and I can't carry stuff when I run.

Kiwikiss1 · 14/11/2017 19:42

Hello everyone! I am running for the Epilepsy Society and cannot believe I got in! I am running three times a week and doing strength training twice a week. Such a big commitment. I am having a recovery week this week as my legs are knackered!

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/11/2017 06:44

Well today I’m going to attempt a LSR of somewhere around 9miles. Wish me luck!

Welcome Kiwi how are the fundraising plans going?

LoudestRoar · 15/11/2017 11:54

Good luck thursday let us know how you get on. Hello to all the new runners on the thread!
I need to start fitting some cross training in, but not today, as I had cask for breakfast!

LoudestRoar · 15/11/2017 11:54

cake even,

farine · 15/11/2017 16:48

Hope the LSR went well, Thursday.

I did some sprints / intervals last night. Decided to go outside rather than treadmill in gym but it was so dark I really struggled to feel confident running fast in case I tripped up.

I can also tell I am not pushing myself 💯, I definitely ease off or stop sooner than I should. So last night I was meant to run hard for 90 seconds but I was giving up after 60 seconds - basically as soon as it really hurt! I need to shift the mindset if I am to benefit from my training.

Just bought a book called How Bad Do You Want It? By Matt Fitzgerald who has written a lot on endurance running. Hoping to get some tips on how to push a bit more

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/11/2017 18:26

Thanks all, I went a bit off piste on the back roads and ended up doing 10.5 miles at around 11minute miles. Can't say I enjoyed it but it served it purpose.

When I do sprints (sporadically) I try to do them up hills do I can do shorter bursts! On a 30 second hill sprint I find myself looking longingly at my watch from about 22secs and I've nearly always started slowing down before the beeps. Don't be too hard on yourself farine, any speed work is better than no speed work I think.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/11/2017 20:39

Anyone got a hydration backpack recommendation?
I loathe carrying a bottle with me but anything over 10 miles I need a drink

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 15/11/2017 21:08

I use a stretchy belt thing can't remember what it's called but you can stuff it full of things so I put a couple of small water bottles in it and after 1/4 mile you don't notice it. I'm going to invest in some soft bottles though to prevent rubbing

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/11/2017 22:15

Ah thanks, I have a fit belt that I sometimes use to carry phone and keys but don’t fancy trying to shove a litre of water in there!

PickleSarnie · 17/11/2017 11:16

I borrowed a camelback when I was training last year. Still haven't given it back. Whoops. Only used it once. It's not brilliant but does the job. And figure will only be doing runs long enough to need it a few times. I don't tend to take water on runs up to about 5-6 miles in winter. Then have a bottle that sits in a neoprene grip thing. It sloshes but is comfy enough to hold.

Just been for 9 miles run along the canal. Was bloody beautiful this morning. Still frosted and so quiet. Was aiming for 7 miles but it was so nice I did 9.

Sat with ice packs on knees now in attempt to ward off any aches. I really want damn knees to hold up this time.
