Panic moment, we were running out of room on old thread so started a new one for today's run reports Smile

Today I did my first park run. It was not great! 471 out of 476 runners and time of 49:04.

I hated every minute of it. Jogged and walked and was embarrassed to be holding up the Marshall on a cold day, but am determined to get better & not quit.

I'm generally unfit & struggle to fit in exercise around the usual work/life/parent challenges.

I tried 3mins walking, 3 mins slow jogging, but had to speed walk the whole of the 2nd lap as my legs were like jelly! Any tips on how to make small improvements week on week? How to approach the run? Whether to bother going back!

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 18/02/2018 08:51

Anything - well done! That’s fantastic, you lapped everyone in bed, zoomed past all those on their phones in Starbucks and got a new pb.

In terms of improving, just chip away at it. Try sone shorter jogs in the week or C25K app. You can do it

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 18/02/2018 08:56

As for me I got a pb yesterday and forgot my twatting barcode. DH believes me though :)

MelanieCheeks · 18/02/2018 08:57

Brilliant, Anything, and welcome to the club!

You'll get better over time, just don't try to do too much too soon.

And no need to be embarrassed about holding up the tail walker, when I'm doing that role I expect to take around an hour to do it.

Check in here any time for support, it's the friendliest thread on mumsnet Smile

NorbertTheDragon · 18/02/2018 11:55

Well done Anything. Go back! I'm still at 47-50 minutes for mine, and still mostly walking, but no one cares! Go at your own pace. Do you do couch to 5k? That's a good app for getting you running, building up weekly.

My leg hurt this week - back of my knee. And I hadn't even done any exercise. Last week the front of the same knee hurt. Bad knee! So it slowed me down a bit, but it was a really nice day, no rain!

AnythingConsidered · 18/02/2018 12:39

Thank you everyone!

I have been doing a beginners run each week for 4 weeks with the local running club, but was surprised at how bad I was on the day.

Still, at least a high time means I can get reductions!

I will persevere and maybe look at c25k too. Thank you all.

Standingonlego · 18/02/2018 16:53

Well done anything definitely perserve!!!! Just keep going, tell us about it here and we promise it will be worth it. Lots of positivity and happy stories on this thread

Well done on your first parkrun Anything! I wouldn't have had the balls to even try one in the early days of my (cliche alert) "fitness journey" - as pointed out you've set a target with your first effort and now as you progress you'll see that time come down week by week. It takes time and effort to build up stamina and with every walk-run session you'll add to that. Good luck with all your future runs!

I did my 14th run on Saturday and shocked myself by getting my first sub-30 minute time, I was well chuffed but now I've gone and set that bar I'll no doubt be a bit annoyed every time I take it easier and get a time that starts with a 3, ha. Curse my self-competitive spirit. Grin

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 24/02/2018 11:40

Morning all. Hope your runs were as joyful as mine.

Pb!

Still slow but pb!

Glorious morning at my local run today, cold with bright blue skies. Can’t wait for next week when we are suffragette themed.

AnythingConsidered · 24/02/2018 12:36

Congrats on your PB LotsOfPlanets.

I was 10mins slower today but i did manage to jog for 18mins before needing to walk (that blasted hill), and managed to then do another 2 sets of 6 mins continuous afterwards.

Still can't say I enjoyed it but i wasn't dying as much as much as I have done. Trying to focus on running longer rather than speed... Then hoping to improve speed wise!

megletthesecond · 24/02/2018 15:38

Well done Anything. More running is good even if you weren't faster over all. You'll eventually build up to more running.

It was cold today. I wasn't fast at all. But the sun was out so I made the most of that.

MelanieCheeks · 24/02/2018 17:05

Flipping freezing today!

But I managed to transport cake for my 200th parkrun, my 100th at my home event.

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 25/02/2018 12:38

That cake looks splendid - and well done anything. More running is fab and a good investment

givemushypeasachance · 26/02/2018 10:20

Ooh congrats MelanieCheeks that looks like a fab cake!

I "touristed" to one of the other parkruns in the area I've only been to once before, for variety. I'd forgotten just quite how hilly it is, but I got a new Strava mile PB for coming down the other side of it! Ha.

I've volunteered to be tail walker at my local next Saturday. Given how cold it's looking maybe I'll regret that when I can't really go fast enough to warm up, will have to layer up instead!

AuntieStella · 01/03/2018 19:49

Just heard that my local Parkrun is officially cancelled this weekend, as are two others nearby.

I expect there will be a lot nor running during the easily beastly Emma

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 02/03/2018 05:02

Yes ours is cancelled too. :( I have been so down the last few weeks and l was really looking forward to it. It was supposed to be suffragette themed so I had ordered my sash and rosette!! Hopefully all will be well for next week

I said to DH that it’s the best 33 minutes of my week and he have me a hug and said it would soon be the best 29 and a half minutes if I kept trying. Love DH.

Hope everyone finds something nice to do with the weekend mornings

runningpink · 03/03/2018 07:57

Currently 388 parkrun cancellations in the UK!
Was meant to be My 25th Volunteer today. Will just need to be next week instead.

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 03/03/2018 08:39

No runs anywhere near me are going ahead. Gutted. Should just go out of my front door but bed is so warm and it’s the social aspect that gets me out

MelanieCheeks · 05/03/2018 07:35

No parkrun for me either - but those were highly unusual circumstaces.

It's my local event's (and my) 5th anniversary this week - I've volunteered to tail walk.

Tiredpom · 05/03/2018 07:53

Hi all ! I am relatively new to park run, finding it hard to get my time down. It's my 6th work out for the week, I generally have a bit of a hangover..... so I find it tough going ! I couldn't keep up with the 27.5 pacer on Saturday and I'm still around 28pb ! Any tips ?(please don't suggest no wine on a Friday .... I'd rather be slow than give that up !) btw isn't park run the best thing ever .... Smile

EmmaGellerGreen · 05/03/2018 08:10

Hello. We parkrun locally every Saturday but are in Paris this weekend. Had anyone tried the Paris parkrun? My DS is not happy about the idea of missing a week.

givemushypeasachance · 07/03/2018 13:00

After last week was cancelled, this week they were looking short of volunteers at my local so I've signed up to be on finish tokens. Fingers crossed I don't cause a giant tailback in the funnel! Grin

lovelilies · 10/03/2018 12:49

Very foggy and muddy run today at Sewerby! Managed a PB for that course (not sure how Hmm)
Quite chuffed because I had a steroid injection in my shoulder on Thursday and it's still quite sore.
Love parkrun. It's made me into the stereotype (late 30s, started running Grin)

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 10/03/2018 13:03

Well done lilies - my time was dreadful this morning - got sopping wet feet at the first puddle and never quite recovered! Beaten by my 11 year old!

Lovely run though - started with a rousing suffragette choir. Park run is ace. Best. Thing. Ever.

Off to trampolining now for another undignified performance!

runningpink · 11/03/2018 18:15

I done my 25th volunteer stint yesterday. It was a proud moment with yummy cake to celebrate.

Now need to work towards my 50th run achievement.

Well done on the PB lovelilies

Hope you enjoyed the trampolining lots
