New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

CaptainBraandPants · 01/01/2017 08:44

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

Pinkvici22 · 29/04/2017 18:56

Hello!
I've just come across this thread so thought I'd join in. I have started c25k several times and not managed to get past week 2 before. Now I'm on week 4 and loving it. Run 3 tomorrow morning... I've signed up to do Race for Life in five weeks and I'm determined to run the whole thing.

WeeWillyWinkieFromEccles · 30/04/2017 18:19

I'm also going to go do my first parkrun next Saturday morning...

Iwannasnack · 30/04/2017 23:32

Welcome to the newbies! Well done on keeping going.
Yay bwatch! We're proper runners now!
I had a crazy moment and signed up to the great south run last night Shock. I struggled to get round parkrun yesterday so don't know what the fuck I was thinking!!

WeeWillyWinkieFromEccles · 01/05/2017 10:07

Woooop week four day three done! Feels weird to think I'm halfway...

I've got my eye on a local 10k race in September. I said last year that I wanted to do it this year and I'm starting to think it might actually be possible!

CaptainBraandPants · 01/05/2017 16:18

Do you know, this is by far the longest thread that I have started? Grin
Fact that I piss off for weeks on end is immaterial, you wonderful people keep it going.
Well done to those that have graduated and hello to those who have joined.
I have just done week 4 about six times, until I could actually complete the last five minute interval. I have successfully done it now three times in a row and have done w5r1, which seemed relatively easy in comparison. I'm going to do w5r2 tomorrow - 8 minutes, then the dreaded w5r3 on Wed/ Thursday.
It is definitely getting easier and the feelings of euphoria are starting to outweigh the pain. Smile

Captain, I really need to thank you for giving me a thread to kick me through. It is weird how some weeks are easy and some are hideous.

I'm on a bit of a messy week 7/fortnight (getting bored, and quitting after just over 20 mins), but Laura (NHS app) was astonishing to get me this far.

Welcome all the newbies. 5k still seems a distant finishing line...on to week 8 (or maybe I'll do week 7 another time)....

BoobieHolster · 02/05/2017 08:20

Mind if I join? I was meant to do W8 R1 on Sunday but I keep putting it off, I need a kick up the arse! I didn't much enjoy W7, but I'm doing two Race for Life's (Races for Life?! Neither of those sounds right) this summer and I'm determined to run the entire things with no walking!

CaptainBraandPants · 03/05/2017 11:00

Madcats you are welcome. It has been the incentive to keep on at it, albeit intermittently, for me too. You are so close to the end now, I hope you have got out and done week 7 or 8.
Boobie welcome. You are so close, too! Get out there and do week 8 - your done the hard work to get this far.

So, I did w5r2 yesterday and found the first 8 minute interval fine, although the second one was a bit of a struggle as it was mostly uphill.
I'm going to try and do w5r3 tonight as I am having a pedicure after work tomorrow and can't run afterwards in case I mess them up! Grin

I am in shock (in a nice way). I gave myself a stern talking to and made myself put my trainers on. It was supposed to be wk8r1 for me (since I'd not managed a 25 min run I figured I would map out a longer route and give up on that too). Laura crashed on me, but Runtastic says I did 5.44km (includes about 4 mins of the warm up but not the walk home)!

If Boobie hadn't posted to say she needed to do that run I would probably still be sat in front of my computer. We are soo close to completing this.

Looking back, week 7 was unpleasant. It just seemed like too much of a jump (possibly psychological) on the NHS programme. I possibly needed Laura to talk to me a bit more regularly.

Weewilly don't worry too much about wk5r3. You'll feel really pleased when you've done it.

BoobieHolster · 04/05/2017 22:33

Wow Madcats, that's quite a distance, well done!! I've been a bit disappointed with the distances I've been doing, and I suspect that I won't be running 5k by the end of week 9, but then I do have quite little legs Grin

It was so windy this evening, I felt like I was running through treacle!

Did you manage W5 R3 before your pedicure Captain?

BoobieHolster · 05/05/2017 08:03

Oh and I keep meaning to ask. Do you all do a warm up before the podcast, stretches and things, or just do the 5 min warm up walk?

Pinkvici22 · 05/05/2017 08:07

Morning all. I managed a 25 min run last night so starting week 8 on Saturday!

I just do a 5 min walk to warm up. Then I do the 5 min cool down walk plus a bit extra usually then stretches.

CaptainBraandPants · 05/05/2017 10:06

Well done Madcats That's a brilliant distance.
Boobie I know I won't be doing 5k in 30 minutes at the end of week 9, I also have short legs that's my excuse, I'm hoping for 4.5k +. I haven't done w5r3 yet - work got in the way on Wednesday and obviously my pedicure took precedence yesterday. Grin I do have nice red nails now. I will definitely be going today after work - I should finish by 4.30/ 5.00, so will have time.
I don't stretch beforehand, but make sure I do lots of stretches afterwards - I often do some yoga which is specifically for runners after a run.
Pink well done, almost there.

I do these exercises before I go out of the house, I do think they help. The five minute walk didn't feel enough for me to be warmed up properly.

www.runnersworld.com/the-body-shop/five-exercises-to-do-before-every-run/slide/5

CaptainBraandPants · 05/05/2017 20:47

Thanks WeeWilly, I tried those today. I felt they would have been more effective after the walk and before the run, but I would feel a bit silly doing them in the street.Grin
Did w5r3 ok, the 20 minute run was fine. Three of the last 5 minutes was uphill, so I flagged a bit at the end. But after the recovery walk, I ran for another 10 minutes as I ended up a bit far from home!
From what I remember last time, week 6 run 1 and 2 tend to feel fairly easy after today. I hope that's true again.

BWatchWatcher · 05/05/2017 22:34

Well done folks! Glad to see everyone is still pounding away.
I was going to get up at 6am and run, but I woke at 5:15 and then went back to sleep, only to wale up at 6:40 and then my run time had gone.
I thought I might do a parkrun tomorrow. First ever! Aghhh
Any tips @IWannaSnack?

BWatchWatcher · 05/05/2017 22:35

Ooo meant to add that there's an app called Yoga Studio that has great post run yoga.

Iwannasnack · 05/05/2017 23:27

Don't forget your barcode @BWatchWatcher!! No tips really (I'm not exactly an expert). Get there in reasonable time as there's a first timers briefing about the course. Enjoy feeling like a runner and don't be put off by the fact that children, the elderly and walkers are all beating you (that may just be me!). The only competition is the voice in your head telling you to stop. You're lapping everyone still in bed. Feel free to add your own platitude Grin

WeeWillyWinkieFromEccles · 06/05/2017 14:32

I had every intention on going to my first parkrun this morning, but my husband got up at 6:30 with the five year old and let me have a lie in. I woke at 9:15 Blush Ah well, there's always next week.

I do need to get out today though, I'm on wk5d2 and have got my Race for Life four weeks tomorrow.
