New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

CaptainBraandPants · 01/01/2017 08:44

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

Iwannasnack · 28/03/2017 15:54

Hello. Mind if I join you? I've been lurking for a while but completed w5 r3 today and starting to actually feel I may almost be a runner!
With that in mind I went to buy myself some proper running gear today and failed miserably. Running tights and leggings that showed every dimple of celluliteShock
What do you all run in? I'm keen to get out of my tracksuit bottoms that I bought when I was pregnant!!

Madcats · 28/03/2017 21:46

Welcome Iwannasnack! It's a great feeling ticking off wk5r3, isn't it, especially if you've not tried running before and doubted that you would ever run further than a bus stop/train station.

I was soo (not)confident that I'd do more than a couple of runs that I bought my kit from Primark (stretchy hoodie with thumb holes and some vile shiny leggings). I have padded trainer liners (though I recently bought some running liners (only because my old socks are wearing through). I am running in Nike Free I bought ages ago. I probably ought to get new shoes if I start doing 5k a run.

I have been varying my route (nosy runner who likes to explore) so I often end up bumping into friends or running errands whilst out after about 9am. I now tend to wear some Lands End jogging bottoms or some old Uniqlo ponte (thick and stretchy anyway) trousers. They seem to be good at coping with drizzle in the wind and I look comparatively normal.

If it is chilly I wear a gillet or a fleece. I've also invested in a waistbelt to hold my phone/carrier bag/key and credit card and a few coins.

The world isn't quite ready for my body to be clad head to toe in Sweaty Betty!

BWatchWatcher · 28/03/2017 22:45

Hi!
I went to Decathlon and bought cheap stretchy leggings, socks, short sleeve wicking top and long sleeve top. Ooo and running bra, best bought off ebay.
Decathlon is v cheap and wears well.

Iwannasnack · 29/03/2017 06:31

Thanks bwatch. Decathlon is where I went yesterday without much success. Bought a short sleeve top but found the leggings were all a bit see through. Was looking online last night and might order some from m&s to see what they're like.

BazingaBaby · 29/03/2017 19:48

@LegoCaltrops I hope you're feeling better now??

@BWatchWatcher well done on W5R3!! And you too @GottaGetThisDone !

Welcome IWanna. Well done on your running! I run in cropped joggers I bought about 2 yrs ago in M&S, a running top from Decathlon and a hoodie (whichever covers my wibbly bits best haha). I think comfort is most important and since I'm still quite overweight definitely not ready for Sweaty Betty yet!!

Did W5R2 tonight and managed although didn't run as far as I did on my last run? Pace seems to be increasing slowly per week though so I'm happy. Think I'll be downloading that Yoga App on friday (gotta wait for payday), do you have to buy workouts or is it all available once you've got the app??

BWatchWatcher · 29/03/2017 19:58

Ooo once you get the app everything is there. I prefer it to the fitbit yoga app which had a subscription service.

Esssa · 29/03/2017 23:19

Strava it is then Bazinga. Will give it a go and report back tho my fitbit has played nicely the last twice I was out.

W4r1 is horrible! I struggled so much with the last 5 minute run. I didn't push myself like the end of last week, just steady away because I knew it was longer. My lungs didn't like it much and neither did my ankles and lower leg. I remember concentrating on my thigh muscles like they were the only thing keeping me going!

I should be repeating it tomorrow but I've organised to go join a local running group who do 5 weeks to 5k. Definitely seems a bit ambitious and I'll do my c25k at home but at least it gives me someone to run with. Sarah on the app is lovely but she doesn't converse well!

Think I may be crackers but I'll find out tomorrow night. It's their w3r1 tomorrow but out of 5 weeks not 9. Don't think they are too strict about it tho. I hope not!

BWatchWatcher · 30/03/2017 09:30

Good luck @Essa that sounds amazing.
W6R1 done. Phew

Iwannasnack · 30/03/2017 10:26

W6r1 done here too. It was a struggle, think I was a bit cocky after managing 20mins on Tuesday that I started too fast. The last 5 mins was all uphill which nearly killed me!
I'm attempting a park run on Saturday so that's my next run.

RubyGoat · 30/03/2017 13:18

Not so much, BazingaBaby. I got sent home from work yesterday due to another migraine (I'd refused to leave as I am worried about my sickness absence record - am already on a disciplinary for it). My manager basically overruled me, called a taxi & put me in it, despite my being improved by then... she did promise it won't count as sick leave though, on this occasion only. Really annoying as I'd just started to feel like I was enjoying running & I've had about 9 days off so I'll probably start back at week 1 & see how I feel after 1 run. Don't want to overdo it. Grr. I think I'm going to try again this weekend - migraines permitting! Cross your fingers for me...

On the plus side, we might be challenging the sickness policy at work. It's ridiculous & frankly discriminatory against anyone with chronic illness.

Esssa · 31/03/2017 02:44

Well I didn't die or injure myself so that's good. And I wasn't last either! 8 minute runs x3 and I did it without stopping. So pleased with myself.

Hope you are feeling better today lego

BazingaBaby · 31/03/2017 20:22

Good luck for Parkrun tomorrow @Iwannasnack !

Oh @LegoCaltrops sorry to hear you're still suffering, I do hope you're feeling better soon and your employer sees how unreasonable their ways of dealing with illness are!

@Esssa well done on your run group run! How's strava working out for you?

Well, W5R3 DONE!! So pleased with myself, didn't stop at all and really thought I would have to. Am a little worried that at my current pace though it would take me nearly an hour to do 5k??!!! Sticking with it though, I will get there!

Mallowmarshmallow · 31/03/2017 21:52

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone else is around week 6?

I'm incredibly proud of myself for getting this far but ten minute runs are proving really tricky. I'm just about managing them but have repeated the first couple of days twice now and am fairly sure I could manage the 15 minutes I'm supposed to do on day three.

Sorry that I haven't read all the posts on here as there are so many to catch up on!

Madcats · 31/03/2017 22:28

Mallow I've just done wk6r2 today (I feel chuffed too). Had I not had a trip to the supermarket at the end of today's run in mind I think I might have called it a day after that first run.

For me it seems to be a self-confidence thing, rather than not being physically able to get through it. Laura slipped into the conversation that, from now on, it would be a continuous run after warm up and that has freaked me out a bit.

Rather than repeating days, I find that I add an extra day or 2 rest.

So, I OUGHT to be doing run 3 on Sunday but I am sorely tempted to wait until we're back from a short break on Tuesday.

@Lego I hope you get a chance to get some proper rest this weekend so you can put your running shoes back on.

Iwannasnack · 31/03/2017 22:40

Hmm pouring rain forecast here for the morning so I may chicken out of parkrun this week and try and get out for W6R2 at some point over the weekend. The last run with any walking breaks which is a bit daunting.
I've signed up for race for life in the summer so have to keep going now.
@bazingababy I know what you mean about the slow pace. Got dh to work out how far I'd run on the 20min run and it was 1.6 miles. Pretty sure I normally walk faster than that! We'll get there though.

Iwannasnack · 01/04/2017 12:15

Parkrun done! It was dry so I had no excuse. My official time is 35 mins but I took a bit of a wrong turn at the end so think it should be about 42-43 mins. There was only 3 people after me so I can judge it on that. Tough but I managed it with only 3 mins walking in the middle which I'm pleased with. Would like to do it again but but worried that if those 3 people don't come next time I'll be last! Oh well, I'm beating the people still in bed.

Tsotofamily · 01/04/2017 14:01

Good to see everyone is still getting out.
Well done on the park run Iwannasnack.

I've not been out this week trying to rest my ankle which is still abit sore but I'm itching to get out hopefully tomorrow I'll manage one

Esssa · 01/04/2017 15:43

Just back from a run. I've kind of abandoned c25k at the moment in favour of run group homework. 6 min run, 2 min walk x4. Debated finding the app run that was closest and doing that instead. Think it'd be somewhere around w5-6.

Haven't downloaded strava yet, fitbit GPS is cooperating so stuck with it for now. Did download runtastic timer and interval so it would tell me when my 6 and 2 minutes were up. It works but only if your screen stays on Hmm which is a pain in the bum and eats battery. It may be deleted shortly!

Parkrun still seems daunting at the moment. Even tho I've just done 4k it's that last bit that makes me think I'd be last. If I add the extra km to today's run average pace it would take me 39'03" to do 5k, though with it being the last km I'm sure I'd be a bit slower than that. How long is normal for regular parkrunners? I know getting round is more important than time and we are doing far better than couch potatoes even if it takes 2 hours! It's the mention on running forums of sub 20 minute times Shock that make me feel totally useless

Esssa · 01/04/2017 15:44

Argh essay length! Sorry!

Iwannasnack · 01/04/2017 16:17

@essa you can have a look at your local park run's website and everyone's results are listed there. 39 sounds pretty good to me.

Iwannasnack · 01/04/2017 16:17

@esssa even Blush

Madcats · 01/04/2017 17:10

@essa those times are for the crazy young runner folks. I'm not ready to try my local parkrun but the times this morning varied from just over 17 mins from the Uni running club to 45mins from a newbie. I suspect some of the slower ones were running with their children (as some have PB's a good 15 minutes faster). 1/3 of the runners (so about 100) needed to run for more than 30 minutes.

DD is doing her first junior parkrun (2k) tomorrow and I will make a point of wearing unsuitable shoes.

Esssa · 01/04/2017 22:20

Didn't realise you could see everyone's times. Local times this morning between 18.24 and 54.59 so lots of space for slow ones. Average time for that run is 29.18 which makes me feel marginally better about it. Supposed to be aiming for the one on 22nd April but no pressure if you aren't ready since they are every week.

Can I do the junior one instead please. I'd definitely be last, kids are super speedy, but I can cover that distance well enough!

BWatchWatcher · 02/04/2017 09:48

I know how you feel @Essa!
I'm going to bring my son to junior park run and run along to keep him company :) You've done brilliantly though. Just keep running.

I did W6R3 and accidentally ran to the next city. Oops. Then had to run/walk home.
