New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

I'm also using the NHS C25K podcasts. There's different music for each segment of running/walking - five minutes brisk walk warm-up, then 8 x 60 seconds running/90 seconds brisk walking, finally five minutes brisk walk cool down. I quite liked the music and the time went quite quickly.

I reckoned that I'd probably cover a distance of around 2km so pre-planned a circular route on mapometer.com. The main roads around me are fairly busy and difficult to cross (the pelican crossing can take a minute and a half before the lights go red for traffic) and the quieter estate roads are full of learner drivers so I chose a route which had me mostly running in a large loop. Boring but meant I avoided having to stop and start to cross roads. I ended up having more than a 5 minute cool down walk back and began to get a bit cold even with brisk walking, so definitely wrap up warm.

Sorry, meant to include a link www.nhs.uk/Livewell/c25k/Pages/get-running-with-couch-to-5k.aspx

cuntspud · 02/01/2017 18:45

Thankyou for the linkSmile
I suppose it's better to have layers to remove, I can always tie the hoody round my waist if I'm too hot.

SweetPeaPods · 02/01/2017 21:54

Can I join?
Hoping to go for my first run tomorrow but would have preferred to have got rid of this stupid virus that's not going.
What app is everyone using? Will have a look at the podcasts too.

EmilyDickinson · 02/01/2017 22:02

D2 W1 completed today, yay! This time the sun was shining which was nice.

I'm using a C25K app from ZenLabs. It doesn't have music so I've downloaded Now That's What I Call Running to listen to. It does tell me when I'm halfway though so I run away from home and turn around when it tells me I'm halfway through.
At the moment I'm wearing gloves and a hat in addition to the usual running gear as it's quite cold and I'm walking more than half the time.
So far so good. Hope to do D3 W1 tomorrow. Well done to everyone who's decided to take on C25K. Is anyone else hoping to do a 5k Park Run by the end?

beanhunter · 03/01/2017 08:36

Crikey I ache this am! I have a brill merino top that I wear in this weather. Keeps me toasty. Will have to try and go tomorrow am before work
But worried how icy that will be!

jesstar · 03/01/2017 10:59

Yes, also worried about the cold! I'd like to keep up with regular park runs if I manage to get to the end of this program, but not sure I will have the confidence to join in.

For those who have done this before, did you lose weight during the 9 weeks or just tone up a bit/feel fitter? Am hoping to lose some weight but not sure it will be enough running 3 times a week. Trying to eat healthier as well but I struggle to keep away from the Bad Food.

Greenfingeredfun · 03/01/2017 11:21

Stupid question here but.. I'm running holding my phone so I can follow the instructions of when to walk/run on my app. Is this what I'm supposed to do? Do your earphones not fall out when listening to music? Blush

ChocolateRaisin · 03/01/2017 12:39

Hi, can I join please? I did my first run yesterday.

I love running and find it the best thing to keep my weight down and mind and body feeling healthy along with weight training and a bit of hiit. I was doing really well last year with my running, fell pregnant and was then to nauseous to run or exercise. I had a miscarriage unfortunately and the process was long and drawn out, meaning I couldn't exercise for quite a long time and then when I did it made me feel horrendous rather than good, so I stopped and then really struggled to start again as I was so disheartened that something I used to love so much I wasn't able to do.

Anyway, sorry for the waffle! I ran yesterday for the first time and then did a small workout after and felt amazing afterwards, so I'm determined to get back to it! I'm planning to run regular park runs once I'm back up to 5k again. I would love to train for a 10k as well if it all goes to plan.I have a treadmill due to a back issue that I have which I will use on an incline to get me started and then get out and about once I'm running about 3k.

Good luck everyone!

EmilyDickinson · 03/01/2017 13:24

D3 W1 done today. I felt a bit achy this morning, those unused muscles protesting I think.

I have a clear armband that I put my phone in and wear earphones to hear the instructions. Mine are just the standard Apple ones but don't fall out. You can get ones for runners that sort of hook round the ears though. I also have a wristband with a small zip pocket to put my house key in. I hate having to carry things or having them jingling round in pockets.

I haven't done a park run but have gone along to support a friend a few times. At our local one there are people who walk it or who only run part of the way so I don't think that you necessarily have to be able to run a full 5 k to take part.

cuntspud · 03/01/2017 13:26

Haha I was wondering what to do with my phone, I thought I'd asked enough questions already thoughBlush

user1460571583 · 03/01/2017 14:50

Ive just completed D1 W1 and im surprised at how ok I feel! I felt like I couldnt run anymore and then my phone would bing and tell me to start walking. I felt like i would be embarrassed but once i started i didnt care what i looked like. I just put my phone in my zip pocket of my fleece and used the headphones that came with my phone and they stayed in fine as i ran round.

Cheekybiscuit · 03/01/2017 15:00

Hi, can I join too please? I did my first run yesterday and this is my second attempt to do it. Although I am not overweight, I am horribly unfit, so this isn't going to be easy.

missy111 · 03/01/2017 18:06

Can I join? Plan on doing my first session tomorrow morning (in the dark!)

halfgirlhalfturnip · 03/01/2017 18:26

Can I join too please? I am W1R3 tomorrow.
I have never run but always wanted to (for mental and physical health, and maybe the clothes Wink)
Finally got the courage to go for it. Can't say I loved it but so happy to have started and loved finishing it..
I have registered for park run and hope to go along about march. Also signed up on FB to do 10,000 steps a day in march to put a bit of pressure on.

CaptainBraandPants · 03/01/2017 21:25

It's lovely to see so many wanting to join. Welcome
I'm using the nhs podcast, the woman who talks you through it is called Laura, I think, and she has a nice soothing voice. The music is pretty good, too.
I also wear layers, especially as I am doing more walking than running at the moment. Gloves are an absolute must.
Green I have earphones that loop around the ears [https://www.amazon.co.uk/Venstone-X1-Headphones-Sweatproof-Resistant-Microphone/dp/B017NPS6V4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1483478233&sr=8-4&keywords=earphones+for+running like theses]]
I must confess that they started doing a park run in the country park next to where I live over a year ago. I can actually see them run past the house from my bedroom window, but I've never ran it Blush Once I can do 5km again, I am going to do it at least once a month.
I did W1D2 today, went pretty well and at least it didn't rain this time.
Keep running everyone.

They look brilliant! Thanks for the link

CaptainBraandPants · 03/01/2017 21:37

You're welcome. Smile I find them comfortable and they don't fall out.

Well done CheekyBiscuit. I think the hardest bit is starting. When I did it last year I found that the step up in intensity each week could be tricky (though I think that one of the great things about the C25K programme is that it starts of gently and the increase is gradual). If I found things got challenging at any point then I would just stick with that week's programme until I felt I could do it reasonably comfortably before graduating to the following week. I think that it doesn't matter how slowly you progress, the main thing is to stick at it.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 03/01/2017 23:00

What a positive, welcoming thread. Looking forward to everyone's company over the next few months.

Badhairday1001 · 03/01/2017 23:11

I did my first run on Monday with a friend and quite enjoyed it, it was very icy though which scared me. I'm going to do my second tomorrow, but will have to go it alone which I'm not really looking forward to. I think I'm worried that people will laugh at me!

grannycake · 04/01/2017 06:11

Day 2 accomplished Remembered the gloves this time so that was much better. Must also remember tissues next time.

FeedMyFaceWithJaffaCakes · 04/01/2017 06:29

I'm back too after months off (was attempting C25K in August and made it all the way to week 5, stopped because we got our little puppy!!)
Did week1day1 and week1day2 on consecutive nights and then had last night off (just went for a long walk) so am going to do week1day3 tonight!
I wear my running trousers with shorts on top, two running strap tops and a running jacket at the mo (all the gear - no idea!!) cus it's so cold- wish I had a hat or a headband though- my ears get so cold!!

Thingvellir · 04/01/2017 09:27

Can I join please? I'm starting tomorrow once the kids are back at school. I've never done C25K before. Used to be very sporty in my youth but it's been years.... not very overweight but very unfit indeed and need this.

My DSis wants us to sign up for a 5k mud run on 18th March (so we have a goal). I've said if I can stick at C25K throughout Jan I will sign up!
