I've signed up to do 10,000 steps a day in September with the Walk All Over Cancer event.
Anyone else doing this?
My kids have left home now so I don't actually have a school run to do.Its going to mean leaving the car at home , walking to shops etc if I don't make a bit of extra effort I won't achieve it!
All welcome to cheer each other on and get fitter.

mermaid it's fully charged according to the symbol, but I'll charge it again just in case.

Completely lost track of steps now....

absolutelynotfabulous · 16/09/2016 19:51

And well done on your steps. Smile

absolutelynotfabulous · 16/09/2016 20:09

Can I ask a question. I've burned 1050 calories today, and consumed 900. The fitbit is telling me I'm OVER my budget. How come?Confused.

MsMermaid · 16/09/2016 21:44

Have you set it that you want to lose weight? It calculates how many more calories you need to expend than eat in order to lose weight at the rate you've set. I've stopped using that function because a) I got bored inputting my food and B) I never managed to get into the green zone, I was always either over or under the calories it thought I should be consuming.

absolutelynotfabulous · 16/09/2016 22:08

mermaid yes, I have set a weight goal, but I can't make sense of the function.

I think what may have been happening was, as I was not accruing steps, my food intake was overtaking my calorie output. As fitbit is now back up and running, the calories output has overtaken the calories in againSmile. It seems to continuously update.

I like the calorie counting facility and I also like the way the output increases as you accrue steps. I've got an idea at last of how your body uses calories.

I'm a bit anal, I know Grin.

Thanks for suggesting the problem with the fitbit may be lack of charge-it was!

Bin85 · 16/09/2016 22:26

Well done anyone who consistently does 10,000 or over!
I had a very poor day -just over 5000
Then a very good one with 2 long walks -almost 18,000
Today I was charging Fitbit and didn't get round to putting it on maybe as I knew it wasn't going to be that good again

I got my 10,000 steps today, about 5 mins ago. It definitely doesn't count all my steps though. I've been matching on the spot and knew I only needed 100 more steps to get to goal so counted 150 steps of marching but the fitbit said I'd only done 20! Maybe it was the style of steps and trying to walk quietly but that's the style of steps I do for a significant proportion of my day because I try to minimise the noise I make while walking round my classroom so i don't distract pupils. No wonder it thinks I'm pretty inactive during the day where I think I'm busy and never get to sit down.

absolutelynotfabulous · 17/09/2016 07:31

bin it's annoying when you forget to put fitbit on and then do loads of stepsGrin.

Grin at mermaid walking round the classroom. Perhaps she should work "Grand Old Duke of York" into her lessons and get the kids marching round with her...

MsMermaid · 17/09/2016 15:25

absolutely if love to but it would be pretty hard to work that into a maths lesson. My sixth form already think I need to grow up Blush I don't just march round the room to try and get my steps up, it's generally because I'm handing things out, collecting things back in, or going to help someone who is stuck. It's just frustrating that a lot of those steps may not count if I try to walk softly to minimise the distraction factor, out if I only need to move a few steps to get to the next person who needs help.

Weekends are much easier. I'm over 11,000 steps already, just by doing my normal Saturday. I've taken dd to a swimming lesson, been to the shops, then dropped dd off at a friend's house to play/sleepover. I'm going out with dh later too, so that will add quite a few steps to my total.

absolutelynotfabulous · 17/09/2016 17:12

Would it help if you attached the fitbit to your foot? Grin.

I'm struggling a bit today, so putting Absolute 70s on for a sad, one-person disco Smile.

MsMermaid · 18/09/2016 10:11

My final step count for yesterday was in the 15,453. I'm quite impressed with that considering I genuinely didn't have to put any effort in to get there, just did what I normally do on a Saturday.

I won't get that high today because dd2 is out on a sleepover and I cancelled my 9am exercise class in favour of a lie in, then missed the 10am class that if booked instead because I went back to sleep. So I suppose I'll have to go out for a walk now I'm awake again. We're going to a circus this afternoon, so won't be doing a massive amount of walking then. Maybe I'll be matching in front of the TV this evening to make up my steps. I'm planning on winning the weekend warrior challenge I invited you to.

absolutelynotfabulous · 18/09/2016 10:20

Well done, mermaid.

I reached the 10000 yesterday but mainly marching and disco dancing, as I've got a corn on my toe and can't kinda stride out much.

I was hoping to go to London today for some serious steps but I can't walk properlySad.

I've often wondered why Londoners seem so slim - must be all the walking!

Bin85 · 18/09/2016 12:00

I agree 13,365 yesterday and quite a bit of that on London Underground!

MsMermaid · 18/09/2016 13:40

I go on a school trip to London every year and I'm sure I do more walking in those few days than I ever do in a normal week. Round here we all use cars to go anywhere because the public transport is expensive/inconvenient/doesn't go where you need to go.

Sorry to hear about your corn absolutely , that will mess with your walking.

I'm up to 9,300 steps today. I went out for about an hour earlier before picking dd up from her sleepover. Now we're going to the circus Grin

absolutelynotfabulous · 18/09/2016 16:35

Enjoy the circus!

I'm lucky in that I live in a city so able to walk everywhere if I need to.

Corn is not so bad today (that sounds like a pathetic excuse anyway) so I've been walking a bit. May need to do some marching on the spot later.

I wish I could get to London more often Sad.

MsMermaid · 18/09/2016 17:07

I'm up to 12,555 😁. The circus was fabulous. I'm not quite sure the human body is supposed to bend the way those acrobats bent theirs.

Bin85 · 20/09/2016 10:27

Mine certainly doesn't
With nights drawing in I need to get stepping earlier
Yesterday I went out at 6pm , walked for 50 minutes ( in the rain! ) and still only managed 8000+ for the day!!
The Fitbit challenges are helping.

Ooh I love this thread Smile I recently got a dog and walking her morning and evening ensures my step count is 10k plus each day, I also average about 30 'active' minutes which must be when in really ' in the zone' and stomping with the dog! The the pp who did 25k - bloody hell, well done!

dollylucy · 20/09/2016 23:25

After 10 days my resting heartbeat has gone down 10bpm!

dollylucy · 20/09/2016 23:29

Does anyone monitor their sleep?
I get 15-20 times restless during the night Confused

grandmainmypocket · 20/09/2016 23:59

I went out walking yesterday in light rain/shopping and got steps up to 11000. Now me and ds are down with the cold.

I'm going to try to break it up but stay mobile. Maybe no cooking this week. It's been challenging fitting steps into my lifestyle while I'm well but sick. ...... somethings going to have to give.

Bin85 · 21/09/2016 10:56

I hope you feel better soon grandmainmypocket

OP posts:
absolutelynotfabulous · 21/09/2016 11:43

Today is going to be crap. I'm sitting on my a..e all day so not many step opportunities.

I find the sleep thing spooky. How does it know when you're asleep as opposed to when you're lying down watching Doctors?.

MsMermaid · 21/09/2016 18:39

We'll sometimes mine gets it wrong with the sleep. When I'm lying down with a book it thought I was asleep, or even once while I was sitting still doing some work.

I'm back to doing badly again, it's work getting in the way of more interesting things. I only did 6,500 ish yesterday, and I'm not even up to 4,000 today. So once dd2 is in bed I'll be going out for a walk in the dark and rain, not my idea of fun (although I do enjoy uninterrupted listening to my audio book). It's so hard to get motivated to go out when the weather is bad.

absolutelynotfabulous · 22/09/2016 17:48

Can I ask a question?

Does the calorie "allowance" increase exponentially according to how many steps you do?
