Gather here parkrunners old and new. Tell us all about your running, volunteering, juniors, tourism, Cake and cows.

Old thread here for anyone interested.

We are probably the best thread on MN. All are welcome here whether you are brand new to parkrun or sporting your 500 shirt.

random I have a wristband which works well for me.

Congratulations thursday 100 parkrun's is a massive achievement 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I completed parkrun 80 for me today, I had to take it steady due to my ongoing pain in the bum, feels much better though so hope to be back running more this week.

sniffle12 · 15/04/2017 14:38

Parkrun 2 for me today. Our course has a sustained fairly steep climb leading up to the 4km mark and it absolutely kills me. I've managed to run all of the course except that both times.

Does anybody have any tips for getting up a sustained climb without ruining your time? I was running behind the 30 min pacemaker all the way up to the hill and then had to watch him fade into the distance Sad

chutneypig · 15/04/2017 15:08

Congratulations Thursday!!!

I've got a wristband too random for me and the kids. They do the job!

On the road to your hundredth too MyBlackCat! Hope the pain eases.

One of our local runs is very hillysniffle I usually walk a bit up the first and always the second which is around 4K. My times are generally faster when I walk than run them, I've got more energy for the final push. Some of the others might have some more useful tips, I'm a very lazy individual Grin

30 dead on for me today. Thanks DD for insisting we needed a walk break then doing a massive sprint at the end and leaving me for dust. And before anyone thinks I'm being mean, she did it six minutes faster last week when running with her dad Grin

randomsabreuse · 15/04/2017 16:04

I think I can currently walk up the hills faster than I can run but figured it is easier to run faster eventually if I'm used to running. I just plod up at a speed I think I can sustain and keep an eye on the heart rate watch. I try to keep under zone 5 unless I know the top of the hill is very very close as that works for me.

MelanieCheeks · 15/04/2017 16:45

Wristbands last much longer than the key fob ones.

Getting up hils - practice practice practice, I'm afraid!

Didn't quite scrape that PB today - dogs and buggies starting at the back of a 400 strong field on narrow paths made for a slow first km. But DS was delighted to get under 25 mins. His home in London is round the corner from Crane Park and close to Bushy, so I think he's enough of a stats geek to get hooked.

Next week I'm for Portrush, and taking Minnie with me. It'll be her 20th different event so she'll earn the coverted cow cowl Grin

feetheart · 15/04/2017 17:33

Yay Thursday 100 is a brilliant achievement.

Melanie - well done on showing DS enough of the joys of parkrun to, hopefully, get him hooked :)

Lovely day for our 2nd birthday today - over 300 runners again, lots of interesting takes on the Mad Hatter's theme, plenty of cakes and easyish results processing.

sniffle12 · 15/04/2017 17:43

Thanks for the hill advice, I am a good brisk walker so perhaps I should just walk up a bit more briskly each time and know I'll still have energy at the top rather than use everything I have running! I think I fall into that trap of thinking I need to run the whole thing but I guess if I'd be slower running than walking that's counter-productive!

runningpink · 15/04/2017 21:03

What is the sizing like on the wrist bands? I forgot my barcode today (was a stressful morning)...luckily I had a spare stashed in my car just incase. But thinking if I had wristband it would constantly be on me.

We had an amazing parkrun 2nd birthday today. Emotions were definitely running high and we nearly topped our record for numbers.

I can't believe how much parkrun has changed my life.Love parkrun.

Well done everyone on the pbs and milestones.

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/04/2017 07:30

I have had a wristband for well over two years now and it's still in perfect condition. And I find it easier to remember to take with me too - perhaps it's the act of putting it on with my garmin?

I can't remember about sizing tbh. I have skinny wrists so I presume I got the smallest one - it's easy to get on and secure once there. A good way to carry your ICE and any medi information too I suppose.

StrawberryMouse · 16/04/2017 07:44

Ahhh, I love Park Run! Have only done a few so far in my town and one in the nearby city but it's a great atmosphere (when I'm up early enough!) and usually quite busy.

I'd noticed the wrist bands online and they look like such a good idea, I have loads of bar codes printed out now which I can never find!

I'm a few seconds off 23 mins at the moment, would love to push under, be extremely happy with a 22:59 to be honest but there is a wicked hill on ours which always kills me off halfway through!

I also volunteer at my local junior park run which is getting bigger and the children receive certificates for completing half marathon, marathon distance etc which seems like a great motivator to get them running every week.

Are dogs allowed at anybody's local run? We can't take them on ours but not sure if that's the case everywhere and would love to run (slowly) with my two.

MelanieCheeks · 16/04/2017 08:34

Some events have a "no dogs" policy, but most allow them. One dog only, short lead, and you often have to start at the back.

AuntieStella · 16/04/2017 12:10

My parkrun and my DBro's (which I ran as a tourist) have same rules, reminded to all at the briefing. On dog, on lead, and (at one of them) a warning that if there's ever a complaint from the public about a particular dog it can't come again (suspect a back story there, but I'm to new to it all to know what)

chutneypig · 16/04/2017 16:51

I've got the smallest wristband too, same as my children. It's a little snug getting on but I forget it's there once it's on. I hate things flapping on my wrist.

All our local ones allow dogs, I know some don't because of local restrictions. 23 minutes is phenomenal- I can only dream!

Marshalling at juniors today, lots of high fives and smiling faces.

MyBlackCat · 16/04/2017 18:17

My wristband is extra small, I would also love to run 23 minutes.... gone sub 24 twice before but it could be a while before I do it again Confused

runningpink · 16/04/2017 21:34

Thanks for wrist band info. I might see if I can try someone's next week so I make sure to get correct size.

cinnamongreyhound · 17/04/2017 22:19

Your 100 sounds lovely ThursdayLastWeek!

randomsabreuse I had the small ones that you can put on your laces for ages (these are the cheapest) but I got a wrist band for Christmas which I love and I wear it all the time so I can tell anyone who asks about parkrun Smile. Well done on the pb.

Only one dog StrawberryMouse but yes most do. They usually don't if the park they're in doesn't allow dogs or if they've had an incident in the past. I alternate mine as I have theee dogs. We don't have to start at the back at our home run and I wasn't told to when I was a tourist this weekend either.

I have a small runningpink and I'm a size 8 clothes and a barge height. I tend to prefer things tighter on my wrist.

I ran gorleston cliffs this weekend, ran my fastest parkrun this year but all tarmac so easier than my home. Very congested start and they broke their attendance record too. We were second dog Smile

standingonlego · 17/04/2017 22:43

Catching up on thread, been having a bit of a digital detox :) Record attendance at our parkrun on Saturday - 605 Shock.

ThursdayLastWeek · 18/04/2017 13:28

Has anyone claimed a club tee recently?
Or does anyone know why I can't claim mine yet? I thought it might be because of the bank holiday but it hasn't changed today :/ I hope I don't have to wait as long as I did for my 50!

cinnamongreyhound · 18/04/2017 14:01

No stock, depends on your size but the new batch is due in April some time. Have you had your email?

ThursdayLastWeek · 18/04/2017 14:06

I thought it must be stock again boooooooo

I've had my 'club notification' but nothing about the t shirt. Never mind hopefully soon!

MelanieCheeks · 18/04/2017 15:26

Sigh of contentment. Ordered a wristband for DS as an early birthday pressie.

cinnamongreyhound · 21/04/2017 09:56

Yay MelanieCheeks!

I have to visit the mil tomorrow so no parkrun for me Sad
Our newest rd is going it alone for the first time this week so I wish him luck!

MelanieCheeks · 21/04/2017 19:01

I'm at Portrush with Minnie to earn her dog-cow-cowl {grin}

Wonder if DS will go to his closest at Crane Park, or be tempted by Bushy....

MyBlackCat · 21/04/2017 19:44

I'm off touristing tomorrow- only 30 mins away so not far, will be my 15th different parkrun, the cow cowl is getting closer Smile

standingonlego · 21/04/2017 23:49

Our veteran runner bob (age 82)has his 250 parkrun tomorrow, first northampton local to achieve it !! There will be cake :)
