Sounds like a nasty fall Cinnamon :( although what fall isn't unless you happen to land on a soft surface!

I seem less prone to tripping over while running than while walking, my theory is that because I'm already 'in flight' it's easier to save myself

suzannecaravaggio · 27/11/2015 16:14

correction!

Flowers Family I'm so sorry that your Achilles isn't improving as fast as you hoped. It does seem that injuries there take a long time to heal (excuse the pun). A friend of mine has had an injury there for nearly 2 months, she still can't run (she is really fast and hoped to be in form for the cross country season) and has bought herself a really good bike and is cycling hundreds of kms a week to keep fit. I really hope you will be back on form soon.
LastQueen not sure if it is possible but I did 3H40 in March and the race was 500m longer than a marathon should be (we all measured it longer with our watches) and I had 2 stops due to GI probs, so without those things maybe just maybe!
10 miles with a friend and Sam-the-border-collie in the unending drizzle that is this week's weather.

Thanks Anglaise. It is very frustrating! I feel for your friend, I have had to pull out of and not enter some regular favourite races of mine (although I'm not particularly fast I do enjoy these ones, one in particular has the best array ever of home baked cakes and goodies, really spurs me on for the last couple of miles which are uphill and usually into a fierce headwind!) I'm glad she is getting lots of cycling in. Mine has ground to a halt as the weather has been grim. I may have to consider swimming, which I hate, aargh!
Re your March marathon (was that Barcelona?) being long, apparently the Bangkok one added an extra 4 miles on by accident! Shock

lastqueenofscotland · 28/11/2015 12:29

Best of luck Anglaise. I'm aiming for sub 3:45 next year.
Lovely 13.3 round the countryside. Really enjoyed myself despite the Minging wind. Oh and a half marathon 6 min pb.

Maybe yet not just a one trick pony of being a quick 10k runner.

Anglaise1 · 28/11/2015 13:39

Congrats on your HM Last 6 mins off your PB is huge, well done! Family it was the Rome marathon I did in March, but 500m is nothing compared to 4 miles Shock - I've had 4kms added to a trail race because of mis measuring and that was bad enough!
9 miles to add from a club session this morning.

4 miles from me for my last 30-34 age catergory parkrun and to and from. 1207.75

custardcreamdreams · 28/11/2015 20:01

Sorry to hear about your achilles family. Thanks, I may regret it but I have decided to do it Grin Everest looks very hard, especially as it is at the end.

Fantastic last, the wind was harsh here today, well done.

5.5.

Jo4040 · 28/11/2015 20:06

Sorry... Maybe I should start a new thread, but...

I'm desperate to start running. I'm unfit, I just don't know how to go about it. How and where on earth do you start?!

Toraleistripe · 28/11/2015 20:08

Couch to 5k. Got me running but dodgy Achilles have set me back. I now have Achilles tendonitis and am only running twice a week, about 4k.

MyBlackCat · 28/11/2015 20:19

3.1 parkrun miles from me

jo4040 start with walk/run/walk - walk a minute, run a minute, walk a minute or two, try to build up the time you run for each time so run1.5min, walk 1 etc and so on. You will progress quickly and feel the difference - it's great GrinGrin

Jo4040 · 28/11/2015 20:39

So its really that simple? I can manage that easy. Just feel daft running around the Streets.

I did the 'Insanity' work out last year and kept up with that.I just lay on the floor for about ten mins every time I had finished.

Jo4040 · 28/11/2015 20:39

Thanks for the advice myblackcat

lastqueenofscotland · 28/11/2015 20:59

Jo take it as it comes. I took up running in April after sitting in the office on a Saturday and just thought "sod it when I get home I'm going to go for a run" ran for 15 minutes enjoyed it and the rest is history!

cinnamongreyhound · 28/11/2015 21:00

I'm a couch to 5ker too Jo4040, had never run before in my life! Downloaded the podcast into my phone and off I went in the dark evenings. Found myself a safe path route and manage to get around it twice, as I progressed through the program I did more laps and then found a new route. Within 9 weeks I could run 30mind straight, too me another 3 months to actually do 5k but in the last four years I've manage 3 half marathons and lots of 10k races as well as joining an athletics club and a canicross club. It really works! There's usually a c25k thread on mn so go and check it out.

suzannecaravaggio · 28/11/2015 21:13

yes you dont have to half kill yourself, just push yourself a bit but on a regular basis :)

Jo4040 · 28/11/2015 21:42

Thanks guys. I'm going to do it. ThanksSmile

suzannecaravaggio · 28/11/2015 21:45

keep us posted!

Jo4040 · 28/11/2015 21:48

I'll be a regular on here. Mark my word.

Would you say 15 mins for my first time is realistic?

suzannecaravaggio · 28/11/2015 21:56

I started running with a reasonable level of cv fitness so dont have actual experience of c25k, but I think 15 mins should be ok Jo

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 28/11/2015 22:46

Welcome Jo!

15 mins for your first would be good going. If you find yourself wanting to stop after a few minutes then just slow way down.

Another 2.1 to add from me today 1218.45.

And I went to TKMaxx and stocked up on new running stuff. Looking forward to wearing it!

cinnamongreyhound · 29/11/2015 08:16

I think a you need to run slower than you think you need to when you start out and then you can increase pace and the time you run as you go. Other than walking I did nothing and was quite overweight when I started so a minute/minute and a half was really tough! Once I was regularly running 5k a friend decided she would join me, she was convinced she'd be able to do it but soon realised 30mins solid running was tougher than she thought! Just wouldn't want you to go out expecting 15mins to be ok and then be discouraged from trying again if it's not.

mudandmayhem01 · 29/11/2015 08:42

Club championship,,really tough pathless running over the moors using map and compass to get between different points on the moors, didn't get completely lost or stuck in any bogs so will count that as a good result. About 8 miles of running but took ages as it involved running through heather, bracken, crossing streams, steep climbs etc. Recovery jog today for me.

Jo4040 · 29/11/2015 08:45

Thanks guys. I'm 24, five foot1, 8 stone and toned. I look like I run. But infact, I eat what I want and do no excercise apart from never really stopping housework/moving about in my job. But nothing hard core with my body to work up a sweat.

Tbh, I just feel, stiff, unflexable, stagnent if you know what I mean. I like to runso I think getting out there and just moving would be the answer for me.

I'm so proud of all the people on here who have actually had the proactivness to get up and do it. You all must feel a million dollars Grin

Whowouldfardelsbear · 29/11/2015 09:10

Jo4040 I only started running in January this year - I used the C25K zen labs app which starts you off running 1 min, walking 2 min for a total of half an hour or so. Then you build up the running periods each week till you can do 30 min straight running.

It worked for me - i think one of the important things is to take it slow and have rest days because you are building up muscle and getting your body used to running, If you go hard at it from the start you could end up injured or put-off. I also recommend getting proper trainers!
