Welcome DeckSwabber, OhOneOhTwoOhThree will be able to help you I'm sure she followed a marathon plan quite strictly a couple of years ago Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/08/2015 19:23

Evening all, reporting for duty.

Only 3.1 parkrun miles to add (and can't see previous total). Is a lovely evening here but I had my hair done today and can't face getting sweaty and having to wash it when for once I don't look like I have been dragged through a hedge backwards Grin I have taken tomorrow off for DS1's A level results so will no doubt need a stress-busting run tomorrow Grin

DeckSwabber I followed the Cool Running 20 week beginner marathon plan for my NY marathon 2 years ago. I think I did almost all the runs on the plan except for a few days when I was unwell in the middle. I liked the plan because it was clearly structured. Once you get to the longer runs you have options, so you can run up to either 20 or 26 miles as part of the training. I went for a longer 20 week one so there was some downtime in case I was ill/injured.

I completed the marathon in just shy of 5 hours, so am certainly not fast. I was aiming for faster, but lost time with tummy trouble/loo queues. But I ran it all Smile. I am planning another marathon next year and will use the plan again - partly because I logged every single training run on my garmin so I can compare my progress geek, who me?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/08/2015 19:25

This is the plan

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/08/2015 19:26

Oh and the other good thing was that most of the Saturday runs were 3 miles, so I used my parkrun for that one (and ran there or back if I needed to extend it).

Sorry for hogging thread.

runtothehills · 12/08/2015 20:41

Deck welcome! I did roughly the same as Keyser, though I've not run a traditional road marathon. I think as long as you slowly increase milage with some intervals/tempo work in between it works.

I have 17 miles to add. 12 from yesterday and 5 from today. Both done on my wee break to Aviemore and both up into the Cairngorms again. First just me and my dog on the plateau in the thick mist and rain, quite a navigational challenge! Second was a lovely early evening run before heading home with my friend. It went up the hill I remember my Dad running up every day when I was a kid nostalgiaSmile. Over 3000m ascent over the past 4 days, and good dust off of my map and compass skills Grin

Good luck nosominiOhOneOhTwoOhThree!!!

Mumonabroom · 13/08/2015 07:26

3.1 from me on Tuesday, just stopped Physio and an injury which had gone seems to have started up again! Typical.

emummy · 13/08/2015 10:24

Very frustrating Mumonabroom, I hope it settles down soon.
Combined hill and fartlek session this morning - what evil mind comes up with these training plans?! As I live in a town built on a hill there were plenty of hills to torture me. Then walked dog so legs are well exercised!

Last night's run felt really good. I think I'm back in my stride now after three weeks of no running on hols. I'm going to start increasing my distance now, gradually. When did you guys start to need to take drinks with you? I run for 30 mins at the mo, hoping to very gradually increase to an hour, just for fitness, I'm not really bothered about marathons or anything like that.

suzannefollowmyvan · 13/08/2015 16:13

Fluke I generally run for a couple of hours, I dont take a drink because there are water fountains on the route but I do drink not really because I'm especially thirsty but sometimes I have a dry mouth or just because running is hard and having a few mouthfuls of water just makes it a bit more comfortable.

I know some people go over the top with the amount of water that they carry but imo anything that makes it easier for you to get out there and do the running is a good thing:)

That said I doubt I would drink anything if I was running for less than an hour...unless it was especially hot

suzannefollowmyvan · 13/08/2015 16:14

12 miles from me

3 yesterday and 5 today so 596.4
Still feeling fat from too much food on holiday.

I take water only on my long runs (8 miles plus) and I use those re-sealable juice packs that my kids have, just fill them half way so they fit into my bum bag. I don't need much, just enough to keep my mouth hydrated as I am a bit of a mouth breather when running. Once i've hit 100 cals if i'm still running i'll have a gel as well.

As for M or HM plans, I am just increasing distance weekly, I should be at 11.5 or 12 miles before my HM. Even if i'm not, i'm not going to worry. I reckon I can plod on at my 12 minute pace if I have to. If I can run 9 miles now, I can run 13 by October. I hope!

I have a question: my running gear never smells as nice after a bit even after 90 degree washes. I am a sweaty runner! Has anyone tried bicarbonate of soda to kill smells? Or should I just resign myself to either honking or forking out for new tops?

familygermsareok · 13/08/2015 19:28

Well done on your long run BlackCat and welcome Deckswabber Smile

It's great that you are getting lots of podium places now Anglaise, I hope most of the trophies are of the less ugly variety Wink. I don't understand why there seems to be a relative lack of fast FVs compared to FSVs here, maybe the fast FVs are all busy doing larger higher profile races. I need to enter as many races as I can before my next birthday to maximise my chances! Grin

That sounds like some challenging runs runtothehills especially in poor visibility!

Fluke re water I don't usually take any unless I am running for more than about 13 miles/ 2 hours, although I would if it was a particularly hot day. I do tend to run in the mornings though and am in Scotland so we don't get that hot ( especially this year Hmm ). Agree that everyone is different though so best do what you are comfortable with. Better to take and not use than need it.

phlebas good idea re bicarb of soda. My running gear doesn't tend to get smelly but DH's sports stuff does. Would you soak in a bicarb solution pre wash or add to the machine?
maybe my stuff does get smelly and I'm just deluding myself

karatekimmi · 13/08/2015 19:34

I'll be adding to the total again soon, our special delivery arrived Tuesday night - Dylan Elliot Wright.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/08/2015 19:38

3 miles tonight, started in drizzle and it turned into a downpour. The teenage group of my local county running club were all out training on the same route as me - all long limbs and swishy hair making me feel very old and fat (although DH tells me I am neither Star well trained)

I usually forget to take water, but do try to make sure I'm hydrated before I start.

Afraid I don't have any washing tips, but I think we have had this discussion before so someone might remember. A boil wash seems to work on DSs' stinky stuff.

cinnamongreyhound · 13/08/2015 19:44

Congratulations karatekimmi, gorgeous! How big was he? Hope you're not feeling too beaten up!

I've been told washing without fabric conditioner is the key phlebasconsidered.

I don't take water at all FlukeSkyeRunner, haven't run further than 12 miles in training.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/08/2015 20:11

Oooh x-post with kimmi isn't he gorgeous! big congrats to you and Mrkimmi

Neeko · 14/08/2015 06:48
