4 miles home from work yesterday in lashing rain and 4 miles back in today in a case of tube strike avoidance!

suzanneyeswecan · 06/08/2015 09:28

My youngest child is twenty something, my time is almost all my own so it's pretty easy to fit running in, the main limitation for me is the threat of injury if I overdo it on distance. ?

emummy · 06/08/2015 10:06

Hill repeats this morning, did 7 which I didn't think I'd manage but I did, so v chuffed.
Have done 532 miles this year so far, quite happy with that.

Finally starting to feel better, 5.2 from me this morning, started very slowly but did speed up and don't feel too bad now. Hurrah. Bloody hate being ill. I've lost 10 days marathon training but I think I will be ok as long as I don't get ill again

myblackcat - I've only done one marathon (so far) which was London and I figured that if I was only going to do it once, I could do it for charity. I think if you find a charity that has a personal connection and it is your first marathon, you will find it's not that hard to raise the sponsorship. I did it for the miscarriage association, which is a UK charity, and I had old school friends who live overseas sponsor me. One of them sponsored me £100. I haven't seen them since I was 18. Tis the power of Facebook. I do understand it's not easy though. I've never got a place through the ballot on any race (and I've tried London x 4, GNR x 1, Royal Parks x 3).

trijo I'm working from home today to avoid the strike but I would have been running as well if I had to go in.

Need to go and check this year's mileage I think... Grin

Lagoonablue · 06/08/2015 22:05

A measly 2.5 mls from me.

TriJo · 06/08/2015 22:16

Loueytb3 The only ballot I've ever gotten in through is the Great North Run (x2). I've been rejected 5 times from London... this year I'll be 13-14 ish weeks when the ballot results come out. Murphy's law says this will be my year!

PoppyShakespeare · 06/08/2015 23:05

5 from me

250.59 + 5 = 255.59

and then 2.5 from lagoona

PoppyShakespeare · 07/08/2015 00:40

258.09

?

cinnamongreyhound · 07/08/2015 08:11

Can I join please? Am looking for recommendations for a 10k training plan - has anyone used a good one? I am regaining fitness and speed after a knee op at Easter. Signed up for a 10k for last weekend of Sept which will mark 6 months from my op when recovery is supposed to be complete. Last time I did a 10k was April 2014 and before that a few in summer 2013 but I was a lot faster (and lighter!) back then and didn't really follow a proper plan for training.
I am running 3 x per week roughly at the mo, generally 5-8k with one longer run of 10k ish. Want to get faster though!
Also has anyone got any good weight loss tips to go along with running training?

Anglaise1 · 07/08/2015 13:37

Welcome to the running thread runningLou! I can't really help with the 10k plan as I just went out and ran my first really, but I'm sure others can. As far as losing weight and running is concerned, be careful not to over eat to compensate for the extra calories you burn when running. You only burn around 100 calories per mile so even if you do 6 miles a day it isn't a huge amount extra per day. Eat healthily, don't waste your calories, have something to eat within an hour of a longish run (1.5 hours) to replenish muscle lost.
The jury still seems to be out on whether long slow runs or speed training intervals are better, but you will probably be doing a combination of both for your 10k training.
Didn't run yesterday 'cos I on the boat back from rainy Portsmouth with the DC. Knees felt a lot better on this morning's run so the rest must have done them good.
10 very hilly miles in the valley with two club friends early this morning, it was lovely in the sunshine, even if it was tough going.

runningLou Something like the Cool Running beginners plan might work - one day of speed work and easy running for the rest of it, peaks at 25 mpw.

suzanneyeswecan · 07/08/2015 15:13

11.1 from me

  • 272.09 = 283.19

I ran in the heat of the midday sunShock
but it wasnt all that bad really:o
the tide was out so I ran a few miles on the beach

Hi RunningLou I hope your knee continues to go from strength to strength:)

PoppyShakespeare · 07/08/2015 17:31

have entered a 10k in Spain to console self over the 50k that am evidently not going to be anywhere remotely fit for!

FlukeSkyeRunner · 07/08/2015 20:02

Grrr, phone gps jumped all over the place again, so I'm guessing my mileage - about 3.5 miles I think.

283.19+3.5=288.69

KeyserSophie · 08/08/2015 05:26

Adding 10.9 from me to make 299.59. Very hot again today- 36.5 to be precise. We did about 700 metres of climbing and some contour running at an easy pace. My levels of sweat are getting ridiculous. I know it's a good thing in principle as I don't actually feel hot and my heart rate stays quite low, but it's just embarrassing being literally able to wring your clothes out at the end of a 2 hr run. Plus I'm amazed I haven't got trench foot from running in soggy socks.

Have a race booked for 3 weeks time- it's just a 16k mixed terrain, quite hilly. Not really expecting anything from it, but just want to get back in the race mindset after the summer break.

running lou sounds like you're doing it right in terms of mileage. Maybe add in some interval/hill training, or a session of HIIT/ boot camp just to increase your cardio capacity.

lastqueenofscotland · 08/08/2015 07:59

Keyser that's impressive? Where in the world are you. Was going to go for 16 miles but it's hot I'm hungover so going to go for a sprint session in a bit

KeyserSophie · 08/08/2015 09:54

In HK- it's me , Aggressive Bunting, name changed. Thought summer was waning but it's back with a vengeance. Kids are back in school in a week and it's soooo hot still. Mind you, I'm not complaining about the schools Grin

emummy · 08/08/2015 10:11

Lovely sunny morning here, did interval session with ddog, who is now sprawled out on the kitchen floor, lucky thing!
Our school go back a week on Tuesday Keyser, am also quite looking forward to it! Mainly because then I can run when they're at school, instead of having to get up extra early before dh goes to work.

MyBlackCat · 08/08/2015 10:16

3.1 Parkrun miles from me this morning, super happy as I managed a PB and a sub 25 time Grin

307.8

lastqueenofscotland · 08/08/2015 10:35

Oh derp! I need to keep up to date! Just 2.43 from me as racing tomorrow

310.23

Anglaise1 · 08/08/2015 14:43

Keyser I did my trail race in 30°C last week and that was enough to have me nearly vomiting at the end. I don't know how you manage to run and enjoy it in those temperatures plus humidity.
Myblackcat congrats on your PB5k
10.1 miles from me and the dog on the shady old railway line which is the coolest place to be in the midday sun.
Good luck to all racing tomorrow.

Bit of a hectic week so not been able to get out or catch up on here. Agree emummy its difficult getting runs in with the kids off school and my DH not getting back till 8.30 most evenings at the moment Sad. Off today for a few days over back home in Aviemore where hopefully my Mum can do some looking after the girls so I can get out! Then back to school the week after and back to normal routine.

Congratulations TriJo, it would be so ironic if your ballot did come up, can you defer if it does??

Keyser I don't know how you can cope in that heat, you must have to drink shed loads of water (and electrolytes too I would imagine?). You race sounds great and will be a good way to get you back into a racing mindset Smile.

I've a total of 17 to add from this week (quite a bit lower than normal), a couple of 6 milers and 5 miles at the club 5k handicap race plus warm up and cool down natter.
