Edith, sorry to hear that you're still suffering in the glute dept' :( I dont know if you've access to gym equipment but using the cross trainer seems to help with mine

Welcome Mrs Wahlberg Smile

MrsWahlberg · 17/03/2015 20:26

Thanks for the warm welcome and replies!
I will perhaps dobanpractise run distance the equivalent to my place of work and see what I can do with my hair and a wet wipebwash! Haha
I've signed up to do the Pretty Muddy race for life this year. Its 5k but its the obstacle/assult course. Has anyone done this before? Reallyclooking forward to it! Its not until may though so hopefully 8 weeks or so of running with the buggy will have me as fit as a fiddle for the race!

MrsWahlberg · 17/03/2015 20:28
  • do a practise run!
MrsWahlberg · 17/03/2015 20:29

Oh my word my postbis littered with typos! Please forgive me!!

MrsWahlberg · 17/03/2015 20:29

For goodness sake! I give up!!!

Suzannewithaplan · 17/03/2015 20:33

Hi MrsWahl, we understand you:)
I've never used a running buggy, there were no such things back in the dark ages when mine were at that stage, do you think you'll adjust to it fairly quickly?

phlebasconsidered · 17/03/2015 20:34

Hi all!
I am just after a bit of running advice. I only started running after Xmas with the couch to 5K. Anyway, I've got my 5K down to 32 minutes now, which I am pretty pleased with, as I lost a stone to get there and still have a stone to go. When I started I pretty much collapsed after running for a minute! I also stop after every 10 mins and walk a minute, as it helps my asthma and I find it helps my pace.

Anyway, in a fit of insanity at the weekend, I have signed up for a 10 K in three weeks and a half marathon in October......

I can pretty much manage the 10K I reckon, as yesterday I ran 5 miles in 54 minutes, and can comfortbaly run 4. I'm not fast, but it's ok. My question is really how on earth I go about increasing to a half marathon!

I'm tied by work and kids as to when I can run. here is my current schedule and runs for my week, which run Sat- Sat, if that makes sense.

Sat: 4 miles Sun: 5 miles Mon:2 miles and martial arts Tues: 3 miles Weds off Thurs off Fri martial arts

If I increased my long runs on Sundays by half a mile each time, do you reckon I could do it without dying? I am trying to keep Monday runs short so I can try to have a "speed" day.

Oh, I am 44.

I'm just wondering what the flip I signed up for, and if i'm just being daft. Especially since the papers have been full of the slow running lady today. Can I have a half marathon buddy?

ThursdayLast · 17/03/2015 20:39

Ha MrsWahlberg! I got that email this evening too!
I'm going to save my fundraising for the local colour run in the summer though Smile

I haven't managed to drag myself out since parkrun Sad. I feel so washed out. I can't drop the ball now though, less than 4 weeks til I get married eeeeeeek

ThursdayLast · 17/03/2015 20:44

phleb October is miles away - I think you should increase your distance much slower than a half a mile each week.

Have a mooch around the web and you're sure to find a half training plan that suits you - or do you use an app? They often have plans you can follow for free.

I have entered my first half in Seotember, so I'll be your buddy Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 17/03/2015 20:54

phleb you have plenty of time. There are some "bridge to 10K/HM" plans on the internet.

OP posts:
phlebasconsidered · 17/03/2015 20:55

Oooh, thankyou! I know it seems ages away, doesn't it! My BIL says 10% per week, but my mental maths doesn't say whether that would work.....

My aim is to be through the finish line before they have started packing up. And to raise lots of money for my charity.

I did use the C25K app, but I thought i'd go "off app" for this. I live rurally and usually run off road so I just plonk the music on and go. As the distances get longer, I may have to just run and get DH to pick me up from wherever i've ended up, there are a lot of farm tracks round me. It's farm roads or busy between town roads, really. And NO hills to train, i'm in Fenland!

cinnamongreyhound · 17/03/2015 21:23

I agree with others that it's too early to increase unless you generally want your Sunday run to be longer phlebasconsidered. I tended to increase by a mile or even two and maintain that for 2 Sunday's and then the next increase. My week day runs haven't been more than 4-5 miles up to hm distance. General thinking is no more than 10% a week increase.

Perhaps you are coming down with something ThursdayLast?

Another 4 miles to add from me but I've hurt my hip Sad although dh says it's my back and he knows how to sort it. Bloody relaxed hormonal body!

AggressiveBunting · 18/03/2015 02:11

Adding another 4 from my Crossfit commute to make 984.06. Will attempt a longer run tomorrow. About to lose a toenail. Got a blister under the nail after I slammed the toe into a rock on Saturday during the race. It was fun to pop but I think the nail is history. Bit gutted as I got a Shellaq pedicure on Friday Grin.

Just entered a 17k race mid-April to keep my motivation up- mixed trail and road.

EdithDickie · 18/03/2015 05:26

Thanks Suzanne, it's getting there, generally much better as long as I am very diligent with stretching. I don't think it's anything sinister.

Mrs Wahlberg I've entered a muddy race for life in July too!

stilllearnin · 18/03/2015 06:59

Here's me umming and erring about entering a 10k!! - I need to stop worrying don't I Smile

karatekimmi · 18/03/2015 07:06

stilllearning just bookmit and worry about it later!!

Wow it took me a while to catch up!!

mrswhalberg I started running again 6 weeks after mini kimmi (who'll be three in May) and run with a running pushchair. If your used to it, it doesn't feel that difficult!!

Lovely article on your parkrun cinnamon

Well I had a week off running but managed 5k on Monday and I'm planning on running again tonight - I really want to keep 3 5k runs a week going for as long as possible - although the awesome cinnamon has set the bar high for pregnant running!! I'm not sure I'll last that long!!

Anglaise1 · 18/03/2015 07:27

Phleba I agree with all the other posters here - you will manage your 10k fine and you have plenty of time before your HM. If you can do some speed work training in your runs (tempo if not intervals) that will help your heart cope with the races better, rather than just doing long slow runs all the time. Lots of good plans on the internet, I agree. 4 times a week running should definitely be enough.
Stilllearnin yes, stop worrying and enter a 10k, that will give you a goal.
Aggressive sorry about your toenail, mine are the same black and about to fall off. Is it possible to have beautiful feet and run? Don't think so.
Action if you want to lose weight the high fat no carbs thing seems to work, but I wouldn't do it long term as you are so restricted in what you can eat. 3rd and last day for me and I can't wait to get back to carbs tomorrow. Meat and fish, nuts, avocado, greek yogurt, eggs, cheese and vegetables are fine but quite restrictive (not to mention expensive!) I didn't eat that way to lose weight, it was part of the pre marathon eating plan. But I have.
8 miles from the club session last night.

A lovely 3.2 from me this morning. It was beautiful out there.

Now I'm off to catch up on all your chat.

Morning all, adding a quick two from this morning, which in fitted in at 6.15am between cooking lunch for my SIL who just had a baby, sitting down for 10 minutes mindfulness practice (only day two so I can't say if it works yet!) and getting the children out the door for 8am.

I will be knackered by lunchtime Grin

Lots of x posts, total should be
1000.4

5madthings · 18/03/2015 10:14

I didn't run yesterday as had madthing4 a party and had to make his cake. Plus my hip was hurting. It's a bit better today but still niggling. Am debating seeing a sports physio to see what the say. But how do you find a good one. Am actually really pissed off by it. Have been so lucky to have no problems and then all of a sudden this. I may also go and get a gait analysis to make sure my trainers are Ok. Have been alternating my older ones with my newer ones as the new ones have given me the odd blister. But they are the same as my old ones just the newer model.

Madthing5 is at pre school today so going to go out and aim to do 4 miles but will see how I feel. Am just running three times hthis week instead of four so I don't push it. Stretching lots etc. But my left hip is not right.

MrsWahlberg · 18/03/2015 11:10

Morning all! Just done 2.7 miles with the buggy this morning! God it was hard work!! My pace was shocking! 11 mins a mile but I suppose it's like starting from scratch and just need Afew more runs under my belt to get used to it! Need to try and get a run or two in without the buggy to reassure myself that I'm not that bad normally! Haha! (8-9 mins a mile usually)

1002.1 total I think?

twobambinos · 18/03/2015 11:41

mrswahlberg 1003.1 plus my 2 is 1005.1

welcome mrswahlberg that is great going with a buggy and a small baby fair play to you.

neeko im the same as you healthy meals but lots of sugar on the side. if i could cut out the junk id be 5kg lighter

5mad how was the cake?

aggressive sorry about the toenail. i am currently sporting a blood blister on my "bunion" from my half on sunday. it is seriously gross looking but does appear to be going down. that 17km race will keep you motivated.

im thinking ill do a half in july and another in november that will be 3 this year and about my limit. it will keep me focused in the months inbetween too. im also doing a 5 mile race in 2 weeks that i did last year so im hoping for a new pb in that before i eat all the easter eggs.
