All running feels high intensity to me.

:o This!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 14/01/2015 22:05

The Shred DVD is great for upper body strength (but my knees don't like it).

I didn't run today because I had my hair cut and I wanted it to look just nice for one day before getting stuffed under a hat/cycle helmet and back to its usual state. But am taking running gear to work tomorrow - it is going to be an insanely long day and I am hoping that breaking it up with a run will help me get through it.

cinnamongreyhound · 14/01/2015 22:05

I'm a zero Marathon person I think, a half is too hard in the last few miles so unless a lot changes its a no from me! But life in genealogy and fitting training around it puts me off massively!

Suzannewithaplan · 14/01/2015 22:06

I dont really have that much range in my running speed Anglaise, I have a comfortable pace and a slightly faster pace, if I go very slow it feels uncomfortable.

I did find the 80/20 book interesting though, however I'm reading another book by Fitzgerald, something about brain training in which he has so far contradicted much of what he had down as gospel in the 80/20 bookConfused

MuseumOfHam · 14/01/2015 22:18

I did my one and only marathon at 35 (working full time but childless). I'm now 43. It was the training for the marathon that I could never contemplate again, especially now I have DS. Strangely enough, the marathon itself felt easier than many half marathons I'd done, I just wanted to get around and enjoy the experience, which I thoroughly did. With half marathons I was always chasing sub 2 hours, which was just at the limit of my capability at the time, so I would push and push myself and finish frazzled and wrung out.

I have 3.1 from yesterday and 3.1 from today to add. W here is the total??? Hang on.

MuseumOfHam · 14/01/2015 22:22

1086.35 + Edith 4.33 + me 6.2 = 1096.88

stilllearnin · 14/01/2015 22:29

Can I ask - what is it about the shred and knees? There isn't a lot of jumping around really, but I do worry it has bothered mine. I found it sorted my upper body - not so great on core (but despite being overweight I could do crunches etc for hours). Hester - you asked about my stair diving. It was nearly two years ago but took ages to recover. I knocked out my heel pad. If you have done it, you will know. It is like walking on the actual bone Shock

I am busy doing some strengthening for my poor knee and may try a little run in the next few days.

Suzannewithaplan · 14/01/2015 22:47

not done the shred Still but deep knee bends can be tough on knee's.
With lunges and leg presses I try to position myself so that there is not an acute angle at the knee.
With lunges that generally means taking a long stance

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 14/01/2015 22:51

Ham you have reminded me that an experienced marathoner told me that it wasn't the marathon itself that was the achievement, but all the training you have to put in beforehandWink

LaughingM · 14/01/2015 22:58

I feel like I am learning loads from this thread this month! Very interesting discussions on all these different approaches to training...

Out for this first time for a week due to horrid flu/fever. Nice to get out again, in spite of the wind!

My cunning plan of sneaking in a decent run in the gap between finishing work and collecting DC from grandparents was a bit scuppered but I did manage to squeeze 2 runs up the big hill near work in my >20 mins run so a measly 1.6 to add but any run is better than no run :)

AggressiveBunting · 15/01/2015 07:41

A cheeky (18k) 11.2 miler from me makes 1,112

Re squats, I know a lot of people in "the industry" who think that doing high rep air squats and lunges is not great for your joints- better doing low rep weighted squats (e.g. do 3x8 reps with a 30kg bar, rather than 100 unweighted). Dito lunges- hold a dumbell in each paw or kettlebell across your chest and do fewer reps.

Re low intensity running, I get that actually- now I'm on the trails, I tend to just drift along at a really low cardio intensity unless I hit a massive set of steps but even then, I try to keep it aerobic- it took us 2hrs 10 to do the run today but it felt really good. I can do 90-100k a week at this intensity and not have any issues, but yes, it relies on you having the time. Possibly the argument is that the key to speed is distance, and the key to distance is low intensity.

Suzanne I suspect you're right re art vs. science. It's very individual.

Suzannewithaplan · 15/01/2015 08:01

?I agree about higher weights and lower reps but then I'm a big fan of weight lifting so I would say that wouldn't I.

Far as I can see long distance running devotees or purists avoid that kind of weight training because ultimately it will make you gain muscle and weigh more.
The lighter you are the faster you are so unnecessary muscle is counter productive.

Sazorchard31 · 15/01/2015 08:04

I haven't been able to run since Monday, the abs class on Tuesday lunch has left me in agony - coughing is so painful :(

Means my secret half marathon training I was going to embark on ths week, starting at week 2 as quite fancy the liverpool half at the end ofmarch, is facing miserably already! Boot camp tmrw morn and another abs class at lunch tmrw means no running tmrw night (unless I'm completely mad!) But hopefully I can do 4 miles on Sat then I'll be back on track.

Haven't discussed the potential hm with anyone in RL yet! Wanted to.hear what physio has to say this afternoon, I don't think I'm.supposed to even be running yet! Oops naughty me!

Suzannewithaplan · 15/01/2015 09:38

Infact I get the impression that weight lifting is anathema, bordering on kryptonite to the running purist.

Suzannewithaplan · 15/01/2015 09:42

Wow that must have been some abs class Sazor, what did you do?

Strange as it may seem I often find that repeating the same movements a few times but with less resistance can help with DOMS?

Sazorchard31 · 15/01/2015 09:46

It was just half an hr of crunches! It's the ones we did on our sides that have broken me I think.

Suzannewithaplan · 15/01/2015 09:50

?If that was me I do some more of it today, sort of hair of the dog cure, can't promise it will work for you though and I shan't be held responsible for any consequences :o

emummy · 15/01/2015 10:04

Wee 2.1 recovery run for me, nice brisk pace, would have been faster if not for the wind! Wild here today.
1114.1

Mitchy1nge · 15/01/2015 11:23

the key to speed is distance, and the key to distance is low intensity yeah think this is true, not that am capable of speed as such but when I am doing a lot of easy miles my speed creeps up by itself more naturally and effortlessly than if am doing actual speed work type thing, such as club nights

am just a huge fan of easy effort running in general, although today felt a bit pacey for me, in fact was gargling the porridge I'd eaten 3 hours earlier by mile 6

anyway 8 to add, making 1122.1 I think

holmessweetholmes · 15/01/2015 13:38

Can't really add my miles today as I have no idea how far I ran! It's good to hear the 'key to speed is distance... etc' theory. There has never been much difference in my pace on different length runs. The only time my 5k time improved though was when I was trying to train for my first HM (which I never did in the end). So maybe that theory is right! I hope so - as my second NY resolution (after the HM) is to get a Parkrun PB.

Anyway, I certainly went with the low intensity thing on today's run Grin. Am trying to build one run a week back up from my usual 30 min trudge to an even slower 1hr trudge before I start HM training in earnest. Managed 50 mins today. Smile

Suzannewithaplan · 15/01/2015 14:10

9.8 windy seaside miles from me, accompanied by crashing waves as white horses raced up the beach :o
1220.9

Suzannewithaplan · 15/01/2015 14:31

my average speed has gradually drifted upwards over the past couple of months where I've stuck to 35 miles per week but not done anything that could be considered 'speed work'

I assume that some of that will be via improvements in running economy and some improvements in cardio vascular efficiency?

Suzannewithaplan · 15/01/2015 14:34

can you use your pre existing running data to extrapolate the distance Holmes?
it seems a shame to have gone out and run and not added your miles!

HesterShaw · 15/01/2015 15:54

Thanks for the words of encouragement yesterday. It was just an off day because today was much better, despite the wind and having hail spat at me. I passed an old lady walking her Yorkshire terrier in its little tartan coat twice on my circuit and the second time she said kindly "Keep going dearie, you're doing really well." :o I must have looked as though I was about to die.
