does it mention being a bit spewy? I only have a smallish portion of porridge (25g, with water) but it comes up by about mile 4 or 5. Maybe am eating a bit too close to start of run, but it usually has a couple of hours to go down, should be plenty.

anyway, 7 very steady miles today - a couple of being sick, the rest with feelings of having been punch hard in the quads, punched even harder to the outside and above left knee, and awful pains in lower back, right hip. don't think have ever had quite such a comprehensive collection of aches and pains in one run Grin also bizarrely felt like I could fall asleep for the last but one mile, mad fatigue. I really am a stranger to the 'mustn't grumble' school of running!

3.2 from me this morning and under 30mins for the first time this year. Yay me! Grin
That doesn't sound like much fun Mitchy. If I puked every time I ran more than 4 miles I think I'd have given up running by now!
New total is 1279.5

Very interesting article Suzanne and it is understandable why the condition 'runner trots' exist. I have a bladder problem too, probably for the same reason. At the bottom of the article, does it say whether or not it helps to drink a hydrating drink before a race?
6.5 from me this morning, 30mins jog followed by 800m intervals with a friend who is also marathon training. After the 20kms yesterday it was hard.

Nice run in woods with dh this morning, extra interest in the form of fallen trees to jump over!

Went for run mid morning as it wasn't raining and wasn't sure when it was coming back. Wore my rain jacket in case and baseball cap plus a couple of layers underneath as have felt cold all morning.

Had a good run of 4 miles in the end and feel better mentally as struggling with anxiety issues at the moment.

Haven't actually spewed on runs luckily but have sometimes felt sick. It's often difficult to time the eating isn't it? Hope it goes away Mitchy, at least you got out there.

Suzanne, I can't read it - what book is it in will see if I can get it off the internet!

I often feel sick too, never actually sick though. The time that was worst was when I was doing hill sprints and after 5 I really wanted to spew. I put it down to hunger and thirst - and exertion. Which would tally as I do my long run on a few sips of water and half a banana at most!

No miles from me today, but I spent an hour with PT changing my programme over. He now has me lifting a barbell (20kg) with 2.5kg on each end as far as my thighs with a wide grip. I don't know if this is a lot, but it has killed my back and legs in a good way! It also means I now have to go into the weights room to access the barbells and the guys in there are HUUGE and a little bit scary. Still I'm a tough girl I can manage it right?!

Hoping my legs recover before Sunday and the long run...

I've started having a banana 20 minutes before running a pint of slightly warmed up water on getting back. I have found the last two days at least I haven't had the stomach cramps which were keeping me on the loo for 15 minutes after each run. Maybe it's just a coincidence as I am getting a little fitter.

Ran the whole route today including into the wind up the steep bit by the pub. After that I was running along grinning and chuckling to myself. People must have thought I was a good natured lunatic. I'll add another stretch to tomorrow's jaunt and see how I get on.

I occasionally feel sick on a run but have not actually been sick, don't think I could cope with that.

I ran Mon and Tues and then yesterday, my longer rUn is meant to be tomorrow, the weather is looking iffy (chance of snow) but right now it's bright and clear, cold but sunny so debating running once dp is home rather than tomorrow?

Have realised that because of dps shifts my runs next Mon and Tues will have to be first thing in the morning, 6am ish... That will be nice on my birthday on Monday. I am not a morning person but I know once I get up and go I will be fine and can feel all smug for the rest of the day!

On lunchtime's 10 miler I got a spontaneous high 5 from another runner the second time I met her - we must have been doing the same loop in opposite directions. She looked quicker and younger than me, but it still made me Grin.

Anglaise, this article by the same author covers the issue of hydrating before a race:
runnow.eu/2013/05/nutrition/simple-hydration-mistakes-to-avoid-on-race-day_502

'1. Drinking Too Much Before The Race
Some runners think they’re camels. They guzzle water or sports drinks before the start of a race on the assumption that they can store extra water in their bodies and thereby minimize dehydration during the race. But the human body is not designed to do this. Any fluid you consume beyond the amount required to attain normal hydration status will only wind up in your bladder, increasing the likelihood of time-wasting pit stops.

On race morning, drink just enough to satisfy your thirst and don’t drink anything in the last 45 minutes before the gun goes off'

I thought that GI distress during exercise was due to reduced blood flow to the gut as the blood supply is directed towards the working muscle, the gut sort of slows right down and stops processing food in the way it would during rest because it doesnt have the blood supply required to keep up normal activity.
The more intense the exercise the greater the effect.

Matt F, says it it also due to 'stomach jostling' which reduces gastric emptying rate.

Actiongirl, not sure I'd recommend the whole book but it's brain training by matt fitzgerald.
(that sounds like deadlifts that you were doing with the barbell?)

here's an abstract from quite an old paper link.springer.com/article/10.2165/00007256-199315040-00003
(you have to pay for the whole paper)

here's the abstract to a paper by Erick de Oliveira and Roberto Burini link.springer.com/article/10.1186/1550-2783-8-12

I'm a bit skeptical of magazine articles which refer to such papers because they often seem to put their own spin on and they have to keep their advertisers happyHmm

Blue champagne, that rocks! I am generally sceptical of high fiving anyone over the age of seven - gave my PT short shrift when he high fived me after a workout.. Hmm but high fiving another runner working hard! now that's cool.

I love that new ad. I totally consider myself to be a girl and I love a bit of girl power! I usually only see other cyclists, but if I see a runner I am going to try it!

Suzanne, thanks for the links, I think you mentioned that book before might have a look on amazon later.

It was like a dead lift that I'd been doing with kettlebells but my hands were much wider than my feet and I didn't lift past my hips, I am sure he called it something else, but deadlift works for me. It was hard anyway.

Hester well done on getting through the run! I think lots of us look like happy lunatics when we run. On a good run I can often be found grinning to myself with the sheer exhilaration of running in the elements and letting go.

Hi, I've a running question if that's ok Smile I haven't been able to go since Monday due to downpours of rain and bad winds so I was really looking forward to going tonight! But it's been snowing on and off and even though it hasn't settled much it's quite ice out. Where I run its dark country roads, I really don't know if to go or not, I'm desperate to go but also quite worried about breaking something!!! So anyway do you all go regardless of the weather and am I just being a wuss Smile

Anglaise1 · 16/01/2015 17:37

Nells77 You should really do what you feel like and don't beat yourself up for missing a run.
For me, as long as there isn't a lot of ice and snow (and there rarely is here in N France) I run in all weather. I don't mind running in windy, rainy, cold, weather at all and in fact prefer it to when its really hot and sunny.
That 'post run exhilaration' feeling when you get home often heightened because of the extra effort, like it is after completing a race!
But you really need to have a good waterproof jacket. Likewise I enjoy running in the dark, but you need to have the correct gear (light, high viz jacket etc.)

Are you sure pure not poorly Mitchy1inge? I don't usually feel sick but get a bit burpy if I eat too close to running. Digestion isn't great generally at the moment due to lack of space for digestive system I think!!

Yes pretty much Nells77, my friend and I almost stopped when we turned a corner weds Eve because the wind was so strong against us! When it snowed two years ago I tried to stick to areas that had been walked on but not too well trodden so it wasn't slippery and failing that in the roads that were gritted. I'd rather run slowly than not at all but you have to be comfortable.

actiongirl1978 · 16/01/2015 19:12

Yes Suzanne it is that, but with wider hands, I was clearly misled this morning! I may need to pick your brains soon regarding progression as my PT sessions run out next week and I am loving the weight training..obviously my weights are significantly smaller than the guy in the video Grin

Mitchy, you really don't sound in great shape, can you rest for a few days? It sounds like your training might feel quite gritty if you keep going and make things worse..
