Hurray, I got out!!!! One of my running buddies took pity on me and said her run last night was quite gentle so she'd come with me. 4 very dark but very pleasant miles 1087.54

kiwikaterpillar · 14/01/2015 07:51

Glad you managed to get out for a run cinnamon- sorry to hear about your FIL.
I ran a much easier 3.2 today so I make that 1090.74.

Upped my calories to 1400 today and felt much better on my run tonight.

Does anyone run pushing a pram? Not sure if I am crazy to even consider this but it would be easier to fit runs in if I could manage.

5madthings · 14/01/2015 07:55

I don't but know people that do, you will need a three wheeler.pram and they recommend 14" wheels and a front wheel that can.be fixed for running.

cinnamongreyhound · 14/01/2015 08:14

We have a lady at our parkrun wih a very sandy hill that runs with hers kiwikaterpillar and sometimes her dog attached too, her dd is 3 Shock

Deliaskis · 14/01/2015 08:27

Noticed last year's runners threads but was too scared to join, but I don't think I can deny any longer that I am a runner!

Last year started off going for a quick walk around the block in Jan to try and shift some weight, and it turned into running, was running 5k 3-4 times a week by June, and did a couple of 5k races in the autumn.

Was then trying to increase my distance a bit, but winter got in the way, so am mostly only managing runs at weekends now.

Did a 5 mile race on boxing day though, my longest run I think, and am now inspired, so 2015 is going to be the year I do a 10k. There's a flattish one near me in July, so that's what I'm aiming for.

Hate hills, but can at least run them now rather than stagger up them.

Struggling with the winter weather to be honest, having to do my exercise DVDs instead during the week to keep my fitness at a reasonable level.

Lost 4 stone last year, got about another 10lb-1st to go, but slowly, over the next 12 months I think, just to give myself a buffer of 'healthy weight' for things like holidays etc.

[Waves] to everyone.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 14/01/2015 08:34

Welcome Delia you are a runner Smile

feetheart · 14/01/2015 09:25

Can't deny it now Delia, definitely a runner :o

kiwikaterpillar - there are buggy runners at most parkruns, I even saw a dad with a buggy at the Tring parkrun inaugural and that one has a HUGE hill at the start and is all cross country Shock. I'm pretty sure he beat me too!

Knackerelli · 14/01/2015 09:50

Wow Delia, congrats on your weight loss you've done amazingly! And yes, you're definitely a runner!

Feeling frustrated at the moment. Finally get to join a running club, finally get time to myself and to exercise and what happens? I'm too enthusiastic and I've done something to my hip so it's now really painful. Angry Fingers crossed a bit of rest and nurofen will sort it out.

Mitchy1nge · 14/01/2015 11:12

fingers crossed knackerelli

am about to head out for a short, tentative run but wondered if anyone had any experience/ideas about running with v low back pain (also in hips and side of thighs a bit) I THINK it's a riding related injury but I don't know, am taking NSAIDs which needs to be really short term as I can't keep tramadol down

will obviously have to See Someone but was worth asking you lot - I don't think running makes it especially worse but it's really only happy if I'm completely off my feet. Which is shit obviously!

emummy · 14/01/2015 11:17

Mitchy I had a spell of low back pain, down to my left hip recently. I did lots of stretching at home but I did manage to run. I found it easier if I tried to take smaller lighter steps, especially going down hill as that was quite jarring. So maybe a slower run, avoid big hills, try to be light on your feet? Good luck!

Suzannewithaplan · 14/01/2015 11:24

I generally find cycling therapeutic for lower back problems

ThursdayLast · 14/01/2015 11:53

I have almost constant lower back pain mitchy - not an injury, just the way life is after working in my feet for years, bad posture, pregnancy and lumping an enormous toddler around.

Rest when it's really bad. I know that's not what you want to hear, but walking is probably the best thing to keep you loose without stressing it more. And I do pilates for general maintenance. And I recognise a lot of what emummy says about hills Smile

Playgroup unexpected cancelled this AM so I strong armed DP into looking after DS and did 10k.

Hi Deliaskis! Well done and yes you are a runner!

Hope it sorts itself soon knackerelli, really frustrating though.

I would have thought the surface will make a difference mitchy1inge, if it's soft ground it shouldn't jar and you'll hopefully loosen it up by getting moving but I'm no expert!!

actiongirl1978 · 14/01/2015 12:53

Morning all, welcome deliaskis... Sounds like you are more than capable of a 10k, why wait until July? Wink

I am adding two miles of intervals. I finally figured out how to use my stopwatch and so ran alternate minutes sprint/jog for two miles. No time for more but I felt pretty knackered at the end, so maybe I can pretend it was a HIIT session Grin

Oh and I did it on a muddy trail in my trail shoes, so that's harder - right?

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 14/01/2015 13:25

Hello all. Welcome delia, you definitely sound like a runner to me!

I have a fast paced 3.2 to add from this morning. Bloody knackered now.
With actiongirl's 2 as well I think the new total is 1072.2.

stilllearnin · 14/01/2015 13:25

Now this is pants! Got some better shoes. Completely sorted out my heel pain from Injury sustained by falling down the stairs. Overjoyed. Couple of slowish 4 milers to test it and now knee pain on the other leg. So painful I was crying out on Monday and rolling around Blush !!! I sit down all day for my job and after a day of this it is painful by bedtime. Just been for a walk and it's defo clicky but not painful. I think it may have been that shred woman - some of her lunges are too fast for me to engage my muscles properly. Tell me I'll live?

stilllearnin · 14/01/2015 13:28

Delia hi. I am new too. You must feel fantastic! Well done!

HesterShaw · 14/01/2015 14:12

Hello Delia I am a bit in awe of you :). All the distance you have run and all the weight you have lost doing so.

Sorry to those facing injuries and so on. Stillearnin, you fell downstairs?! Shock. Hope you're ok.

I felt like I was right back to Day 1 this morning. Two days ago I thought after my paltry 1.2 miles (sounds better in km) "Yay that was easy, I'll run further on Wednesday!" and yesterday I didn't run at all, because I thought going from nothing to every day would be silly. This morning I set out and I feel tired and lethargic and found it really difficult. I had to stop and walk for a couple of hundred metres, and was wheezing, stomach cramping and everything :(

I know I'm only a raw beginner but am anxious that if I start finding it a drag then I'll just stop doing it.

1072.2 + a measly 1.2 = 1073.4

ThursdayLast · 14/01/2015 14:42

Hester don't push it too hard in the beginning. It takes quite a long time (some might say never!) to accept that running isn't always an upwards trajectory and that actually, that doesn't matter.

Don't beat yourself up. Any run, no matter how difficult or short or slow is better than no run.

Weather, mood, general well being, what you have or haven't eaten, what time of the month it is etc etc all have an impact on your run on any given day.

OP posts:
actiongirl1978 · 14/01/2015 15:21

Hester, I think lots of the runners on here would admit that sometimes even after running for ages and being able to run consistently, it feels hard, it hurts, our breathing goes a bit weird, legs hurt, backs ache, its too windy, its too wet, its too warm and dry... you get the picture.

Sometimes it is hard and it doesn't work the way it is supposed to. But because we are runners, we keep going, we keep trying and after every run, no matter how hard it was, we say "wow, that was hard, but I am glad I went". Sometimes we finish smiling and sometimes grimacing, but it is always better to go, than not!

I play a mental beat up game with myself. If I ever skip a run, the rest of the day, every time I see someone else running, I give myself a mental wallop for chickening out. I feel guilty. Which gets me out the next day!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 14/01/2015 15:41

action girl is talking a lot of sense Hester Smile.

Anglaise1 · 14/01/2015 16:34

There are some really good tips for new runners in the latest UK edition of Runners World, plus an 8 week start up plan if you are interested Hester.

It isn't only new runners who get disheartened from time to time. Everyone gets tired, over training can be as bad for you as unde rtraining, and there are lots of reasons why you can't beat your PB in a particular race...the most important thing is to enjoy your running. Don't beat yourself up about missing a run, everyone has good and ad days. You are already doing better than everybody sitting on the sofa.

Mitchy1nge · 14/01/2015 16:52

yay, managed 4 miles without making anything worse, why doesn't the body understand how much the brain benefits from running? haven't had long run yet this week and not sure when will find opportunity, they need a tiny bit of planning don't they Confused

am used to having a strong back, strong core in general, so it is all a bit humbling but thank you inventor of the sticky heat packs

1077.4

karatekimmi · 14/01/2015 16:57

kiwi I run with a pushchair - I just started with my normal pushchair as I'm not really that much faster than walking Grin

I now have a (I think) baby trend jogger with proper wheels, which makes it easier. I can only get away with about 5k if Mini Kimmi isn't asleep.

HesterShaw · 14/01/2015 18:02

Thank you all. Excellent advice, particularly about it being unlikely someone would regret going for a run. Will look at the article in Runners World, *Anglaise8 - thanks for the suggestion :)
