Just done W5R1. I'm really starting to enjoy it, which is something I never thought I'd say. Though I'm a bit daunted by the prospect of run 3. I'd really appreciate tips on how to tackle it.

science, primary and anyone else just starting out, try to soldier on even if you have to repeat weeks. For me the benefits outweigh the slog of the first few weeks - I'm sleeping and eating better and my mood has lifted (I have pnd). Oh and my ezcema prone skin is the best it's been in ages.

WastingMyYoungYears · 08/09/2014 18:28

I thought that this Runner's World article was quite interesting.

If any of you are on FB, it can be quite useful to like RW, then a couple of other running sites. It means that you randomly add to your running knowledge while you're sitting on the sofa Grin.

Iggi999 · 08/09/2014 18:47

I have to do my first 30 min run tonight and am slightly bricking it Confused

Toomuchjiggleinmywiggle · 08/09/2014 19:15

HelloSmile can I join in? I've started again this week, I got to about week 6 in March but then somehow lost track. Is anyone else doing it on a treadmill? Due to awful ankles and shin splints it's the best for me , although in hoping to enjoy one run a week outside when I can go for a bit longer !

FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/09/2014 19:54

Evening all

Everyone is doing really well and I am very impressed. I gave myself the weekend off, walked a mile up the track to my brothers house for lunch yesterday and back, first time up the hill without puffing. Got home from work this evening and took the dog out, ran 3.30 and then stopped as didn't want to push the knees, but felt comfortable and they are not aching to badly tonight. I am a lard arse so it's the impact but I am finding the running is helping with weight loss and toning up so if I take it slowly things will balance out.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/09/2014 19:55

That is 3.30 minutes not kilometers

WastingMyYoungYears · 08/09/2014 20:27

Good luck Iggi Smile! You've run for 28mins, so you can definitely run for 2 more!

wiggle, I've done a couple of my runs on the treadmill, and might do some more in the future. It helps with my knees, and I think I also have left shin splints that I'm sure it would help with too. I've had ibuprofen and post-run ice today Grin.

Well done five Smile, it's great when you see results, isn't it? I've had similar walking up hill / not out of breath moments.

I've just done W7R1. I'm really pleased, as it was generally okay. I feel like the last couple of weeks of C25K are consolidation, does anyone else think that? I considered just keeping running until 30mins, but I thought I'd stick with the programme.

ScienceRocks · 08/09/2014 20:38

No run for me tonight, DH got home from work so late that I would have been running in the dark, which I don't want to do.

Relieved and gutted SadConfusedShock

DottyDot · 08/09/2014 20:42

Just catching up after a few days avoiding the gym... Blush. Cru hope your toe's getting better and Spooky welcome home and good luck on your first run!

I've been 'off' exercise and it's amazing/terrifying how flabby I feel in such a short space of time. Went back to the gym tonight though and managed 5k in a terrible 45 mins but at least I did it! Had to walk for 2 minutes in the middle but caught my breath and carried on.

First parkrun a week on Saturday so am aiming to go to the gym every other day between now and then Grin

spookyskeleton · 08/09/2014 21:03

Ok, I chickened out of running tonight Blush so my first run in over a fortnight is going to be a 7.5k run tomorrow night...eek! But I am running with a lovely group of people so am hoping they will get me through.

Really not keen on running in the dark but don't know what else I can do over the next few months other than get used to it Confused

Well done everyone on their progress - I have read the thread but too many posts to keep track of.

Iggi999 · 08/09/2014 21:04

Everyone seems to be doing so well Smile It's such a shame that our bodies can still turn against us when we are trying to get fitter! I'm sure my poor knees and feet are wondering why the hell pounding almost 15 stone on top of them three times a week!
Well I have run for 30 mins... Which for me is 4 km. if I think about it, I've never run for 30 mins before in my life Shock I need Laura though (or a Laura substitute) to keep telling me what to do.

Iggi999 · 08/09/2014 21:05

Meant to say, it was dark tonight and I hope my reflective thingy comes soon. Not sure if I'm more worried about muggers or cars... Tonight I nearly trod on a few cats!

Floppityflop · 08/09/2014 21:10

Taking this up again but not home yet. I need some magic thing to turn me into a morning person and get up at 5 to do this otherwise work is meaning it is not getting done. I have a headlamp so darkness is no barrier! Any tips to magic me into a morning person?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 08/09/2014 21:18

Welcome back Spooky, good luck for tomorrow.

Congratulations Iggy, 30 minutes is brilliant.

Living rurally will he doing week sessions in gym and go out at weekends, no chance of running round here in the dark

primarynoodle · 08/09/2014 21:59

toomuch I am running on a treadmill too... shin splints occur within seconds on any kind of pavement Angry inner city living woes!

ifancyagreencard · 08/09/2014 22:21

W2R1 just done . . didn't struggle as much as I'd feared. Have started answering Laura back, though Grin. Daftmaul I am also having head phone disasters so am hitting Amazon tomorrow for hook over ear ones. As I run at night, I only wear one side so I have an ear free to keep safe. Reading the thread, I'd better think about a reflective gilet or similar too . . Cru hope your toe is better!

lovelidl · 08/09/2014 22:27

Just caught up for the first time in ages - everyone is doing so well! Smile

Running in the dark is very hazardous - came across an escaped flock of sheep tonight - what a fright - and almost stood on a frog! Gym membership is looking tempting over the winter!

15k tonight in 1.29. I am listening to an audio book rather than music, passes the time and you just want to keep running to hear the next chapter.

KiaOraOAotearoa · 08/09/2014 22:55

science, I am yet to tackle week 2day one. I am going to do that on wednesday. And I am also going to look for some reflective silly vest or something, I have eyed my DD's head torch....oh, the laughs I am going to have.
It doesn't kill me, I am beetroot red etc, but not dying. That is maybe because I am running soo slowly, I am really not overdoing it. Jilly and her shredding saw to that, ever tried 2mins of frigging jumping jacks? Now that's pointless! My mind wanders and I am getting out of body experiences: oh, look, a completely crazy woman, oh no, it's me, etc etc etc. Running I can understand better, oh look a cow, oh no, it's a bull, he never said he's bringing the bulls to this field, oh s**t, should I be running amidst bulls, oh Laura, I hope you're not telling me to slow down and finish my run cause it's really not a good time, darling!
Oh well. Long day and I appear to be slightly delirious at this stage, so I bid you good night.

dizzyday07 · 09/09/2014 02:24

After about 3 weeks of life getting in the way of me getting out I completed W9R3 today. I can only cover 3k in the 30mins and I don't think that will change until I get rid of some of this excess weight

I have thought about doing a Parkrun but at 10mins per k it will take me @50 mins which is miles slower than the last runner at my local event :(

574ejones · 09/09/2014 07:49

Just done W1R2 which somehow seems worse than the first, perhaps it's because I know what's coming! Much better time of day for me to go out especially as it's nice and cool. My earphones also kept coming out which was annoying but I will wait a bit before getting new ones.

DizzyDay, don't despair that you can only do 3k in 30 mins, it is still a real achievement.

lovetoski · 09/09/2014 08:12

All going well with Dh w1 complete and both survived. All pumped up for w2r1 Sunday morning got up early as had wedding to go to. Managed the first two 90 seconds runs then fell over and cut my arm and elbow badly! Had to wobble the mile or so home. Other arm since must have put wrist out when fell really hurts at elbow as aches like made and can't straighten it. Looked a lovely sight all dolled up in my finest with plasters and a bandaged arm. Def can't run again but don't want to lose momentum so will go for a fast walk today remembering to pick my feet up! Who said exercise was good for you?

DottyDot · 09/09/2014 08:24

lovelidl you are amazing! Can't believe you're a 15K runner now - just brilliant! Grin

DaftMaul · 09/09/2014 08:48

I realised last night that the app I am using only gives the first few sessions free, then you have to 'upgrade'! Very annoyed. Even though it is only a couple of pounds, I am defecting to Laura on principle!

Kiaora, I shall be doing w2r1 with you tomorrow. Go us!

I watched a really good YouTube video with running tips and how to avoid injury. I'll see if I can find it and link. My shoe inserts do seem to be helping my heels so far.

Glad your knees have improved, Five. Lovetoski, ouch. 574, I try not to think about what I have left to complete, just stay 'in the moment' - listening to music helps but I like lovelidl's idea of an audio book.

Lovelidl, we're you quite fit before you started? 15k is awesome!

Sports Direct seem to have lots of reflective/flashing armbands. There is also a sash/belt thing I have seen but that might be on amazon.

stilllearnin · 09/09/2014 09:01

For those who feel that they aren't fast enough my old boss ( a huge bastard and have you ever seen me swear on mn?!) ran a lot. He reckoned speed and distance were not as important as how long you kept going for. He had all these stats but basically your body does different things after certain duration. I think he said after 30 mins it burns fat. He was a massive twat tho (that is the end of my swearing - dp is the only man I know who gets offended by swearing!)

CruCru · 09/09/2014 11:47

W9R1 done! My phone is really annoying me, it keeps randomly turning the volume down. I've booked an appointment at the Genius Bar.

MapMyRun said I did 5.8km (but that includes walking at the beginning and end plus a bit to get me back home).
