Hi everyone, just checking in. Will read the thread later to find out what I have missed Smile

We landed back in England in the early hours of the morning so am knackered and feel like crap Sad but I had an amazing holiday and didn't miss running at all. Plus my ankle hasn't bothered me once so I think the rest was overdue but I am not looking forward to putting my trainers on and going out after a 2 week break... it is going to be hard Shock Shock Shock

574ejones · 07/09/2014 17:30

Can I join you guys? I am trying to get healthy and lose a little weight too. Please tell me it is normal to still be beetroot red 30 mins after the first run (maybe a flush is good for the skin?!). I know they recommend having a rest day, but do you do any other kind of exercise on your "rest" days?

Impressed that some of you are so far into it - well done!

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/09/2014 17:33

Hope it is ok to post here! DH and I are thinking of starting c25k. What is the best app to use please?

Iggi999 · 07/09/2014 18:14

I use the NHS "change for life" one, it is the one with the Laura people keep posting about! I also use Map my Run to see all the routes I'm using, but I didn't use that at the beginning.

DaftMaul · 07/09/2014 19:09

Hi MrsH, I use the 5k Free app. It logs the sessions you do, beeps to tell you when to run or walk and I can listen to my music at the same time. Tomorrow I am going to try it with Map My Run as well, just to see whether I start to cover any more ground!

574 welcome, I go bright red too - always have done with any exercise!

Hi spooky, where did you go on holiday?

DaftMaul · 07/09/2014 19:11

Meant to say thanks to ScienceRocks for the headphone recommendation. In the end, I bought some more when out yesterday. I decided on some over ear ones that are adjustable, so will hopefully stay put. I'll try them out tomorrow morning.

stilllearnin · 07/09/2014 20:06

Chameleon I read that you had wee'd in the garden and I had to double check that I hadn't wandered onto one of those threads Grin

I did the 5k+ stepping stone today - basically 30 mins wiht increasing intervals - I have no gadgetry to know how far I have run and so have to check it on map my run when I got home. I did 4.9k this morning in 30 mins - I'm really pleases with that and also slightly kicking myself that I didnt just keep going to the 5k.

Kasterborous · 07/09/2014 20:57

That's fast stillearnin I'm thinking of doing a post c25k programme. As I still can't run 5k in 30 mins, my best time is 34mins 30secs. Which is just under 12 minute miles. I can run further now I usually do a 7K once a week and I've done 10K once I just don't seem able to increase my speed at all.

ChameleonCircuit · 07/09/2014 21:20

Stilllearnin you just made me spit my tea out! Grin

LaughingM · 07/09/2014 21:29

Thanks for the reflective recommendations Iggi and Wasting! Anything I buy will have to wait a few weeks, as I may have bought an unplanned pair of Ronhill tights this afternoon. Oops! In my defence, they are beautiful and match my trainers and I will need some full length ones for over winter Grin.

WastingMyYoungYears · 07/09/2014 21:46

No problem Laughing Smile. I got some new running tights today, they're fab - I can't wait to wear them tomorrow Grin.

Oh yes Blush, I wanted to ask what's probably a daft question. I also got some new running shorts - is the integral pair of pants a replacement for the pants I would usually wear? I'm a bit baffled.

mameulah · 07/09/2014 21:55

Hi

I am new to this thread. I am really hoping to join try the couch to 5km app this week. And being far too overweight and with a toddler and four week old baby I am needing all the help I can get!

Can someone please tell me which app to download? I read somewhere on mumsnet this afternoon that there is a couch to 5km app that interrupts your music and tells you whether or not you should be walking or jogging. That sounds perfect, especially with the dark nights coming in, but I don't know which one it is.

tia

Iggi999 · 07/09/2014 22:07

Hi Mamulah, the NHS Change for Life couch to 5k one can do that. I start the app and then there's a bit at the bottom for music and I can access my normal iTunes - them the voice comes on to tell me to run or whatever. But I know this is not the only app to do this.
A question - running tights: why? Do you wear them under other trousers? I can't see what the advantage is but wondering if I'm missing a trick!

KiaOraOAotearoa · 07/09/2014 22:09

Hi, I use C25K, it's a free NHS one. I like Laura, she's nice...and yes, my own music fades when Laura needs to tell me stuff.

Hope it's ok if I join you?
I only just started this week, finished 3 runs. I look apoplectic but it feels great once I am in the shower. I've got a weird route, quarter pavement, half country road, quarter horse fields, 3/4 of it is up hill to add to the excitement.
So. I haven't got proper running shoes, I have walking shoes/trainers from millets I think. I thought I get to week 3 before I invest in anything. Am I going to regret that?
The running gear I grabbed from Lidl, so nothing hi tech specialised.
I combine running with the shred, but took 2 days to grow my back side. I figured it's easier.
I get headaches after runs, is that because I am dehydrated?

mameulah · 07/09/2014 22:11

Great, thanks about the C25K app. I will go and investigate! Fingers crossed I can do this too. From the comfy couch where I am sitting it seems impossible!

WastingMyYoungYears · 07/09/2014 22:35

Iggi, running tights are just full length tight leggings for running in Smile. I really like wearing my old black pair at the moment, and think I'll like it even more when it's colder.

Kia, did your phone autocorrect to something about taking 2 days to grow your backside Grin? I keep re-reading your post and failing to understand!

And Hello to all of the new people SmileSmileSmile. I was you 7 weeks ago, and now I need to go out tomorrow and run for 28 minutes without stopping. And if I can do that (and I probably can Grin), you definitely can too. Good luck.

KiaOraOAotearoa · 08/09/2014 06:26

wasting, no, that's what I meant. The days I'm not doing anything I swear I can see my derrière gaining proportions akin to bread dough. It suffices to just look at some bread and yep, there it is! :)

WastingMyYoungYears · 08/09/2014 06:35

Grin Kia. Are you in NZ?

KiaOraOAotearoa · 08/09/2014 06:52

No, sadly. I used to live there though.

stilllearnin · 08/09/2014 10:37

So frustrated that I missed the 5k by 100m that I went out and tried it again today Grin i managed it in 30 mins 20 secs.

But Kaster I'd like to increase my distance. I'm struggling to find a decent laura-a-like. I think I'll have to keep adding tracks to a playlist. I don't think it matters how fast you go really ( unless you're in a hurry!)

ScienceRocks · 08/09/2014 12:13

Kia, I'm at much the same stage as you. I did week 2 run 1 on Friday and it nearly killed me. Not looking forward to doing it again tonight but I will give it a good go.

I also get very red and sweaty. My legs hurt during and afterwards (and sometimes before in anticipation). The breathing isn't so bad, but I start out cold and am always roasting by the end.

I wear cheap trackie bottoms and t-shirt (and sports bra!) from sainsburys. I look a sight, but am too focused on the task in hand and trying to not lose the dog to really care.

ScienceRocks · 08/09/2014 12:14

Can't believe for a second that 1) I will get to the end, or 2) I will start liking running.

primarynoodle · 08/09/2014 12:26

yaya w2r1 complete.... but because I am a freak I ran through the 5th walk so I ran 5 mins today without stopping! (this is unheard of Grin )

yano with your running tights.... do they contain your 'wobbles' cause ive got a fat arse and thighs and dont want to knock anyone out as I pass by Blush

stilllearnin · 08/09/2014 13:23

Science tonight could be cOmpletely different - you won't have to go back too many pages to see that we all wondered how we'd ever manage it. You will defo finish it. Sometimes you will like it Grin

DaftMaul · 08/09/2014 13:24

Mameulah, gosh a four week old! I wouldn't have been able to run four weeks after giving birth to either of mine. Good luck but take care. It does sound as though all the apps do a similar thing. Just search c25k free.

I still can't imagine myself being able to run for 5k without stopping - I used to be able to but I'm talking years ago! I'm sure my running speed is slower than my walking speed but who cares.

Had a music disaster today. My phone volume seemed to stick on maximum. So after buying my new headphones - which stayed on (yay!), I had to turn the music off and just have the C25k app. It was ok but a bit boring. At least I could hear when to stop running which was the most important thing at the time! Wink

I do think my 'hotpants' help to hold my wobbles in a bit. I think that is one of the reasons for not running for so long - I didn't like all the jiggling that started to happen!

Anyway, have finished week 1 now to worry about week 2! I also took more care over stretching afterwards today as I know that will be more important as the distances increase (hopefully!)
