Supposed to be working but could not resist challenge of new thread title!

OP posts:
cestlavie · 19/12/2011 15:25

Hi again all! Been barely a peep out of me since I moved back in middle of November as has been general bedlam of new nurseries, new schools, new commutes and a every spare minute spent trying to fix stuff.

Have only skimmed thread a bit so apologies for everything and everyone I've missed....

Firstly and massively belatedly... CONGRATS on the new one rhet! Bet it doesn't feel that new now but congrats anyway mate. Fantastic. Hope you're all doing well. On same topics of little ones, how're you doing peaches?

Congrats to fanny on what sounds like some fine running. Think about a month or two back you and me were on similar times but sounds like you're flying ahead now. Well done you.

How're you doing monkey? Was thinking of you this morning as I was run-slip-sliding my way from Harpenden to St Albans at 7am to catch the train into London!

Am trying to get back into running post move. Live 1 mile from station and work 1.5 miles from station at other end so am getting a minimum 6 miles a day Mon - Fri which is cool though very bitty - managing time to stick an extra 4 - 8 miles a few mornings here and there as well. Definitely need to get a proper training schedule together in the new year.

Am also being seriously tempted by the London to Brighton 100K run for GOSH next May as well... think my brain is cold-addled...!

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 15:55

thanks for snot clearance tips - doc says she is basically fine :) snoozing in pram, time to get her up again soon

dashed to gym and did 5 miles in about 48 mins, warm up and then 5k at tempo (??) pace - did it in 27:33 so thrilled with that. Sprinted for the 'line' and everything - top pace 13.5kph (about 7.10 mm) admittedly only for about 2 minutes. It felt good. Will try to do easy run Weds and longer run Sun.

burst blood vessels - looks scary

doc waived fee today as it was (sort of) her 2 week check as well. Nonetheless...we do have insurance, but there's an excess that applies which conveniently seems to correlate to the average number of GP visits that a family might make in a year Xmas Hmm; you can claim tax back on it alternatively

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 15:58

oh and hi to cest - we've missed you!

futurity · 19/12/2011 16:27

Wow Rhet ..you are on fire! Sounds like a good session :)

Neck update...slowly...very slowly improving. Still hurts but not like it did and can turn head slightly more to the left and right now. So tired though due to not sleeping very well but not working at the moment and kids are off so don't have much to do so can't complain. Have worked out if I can re-start Cambridge half training plan next week then that is 11 weeks which isn't too bad. Can you see I am trying to "think positive"!

Despite desperately wanting to get out this week will not do so unless I am in no pain at all and will hold off until next week. I will just have to deal with my expanding waist line until then. :)

monkeyLFDTwench · 19/12/2011 16:35

rhet glad all is well, can only echo the advice already given about slightly raising the head of the basket/pram to allow snottiness to find its way out rather than down onto the chest ....

Thank you wheely and alma for the Medised advice, I think we will give it a go this evening if he is still disturbed, though he does seem a little better this afternoon so fingers crossed.

cest glad to hear the move was OK, how are you finding the commute? When we're back at school I may well see you on your morning run as we leave the house at 7.30 and are straight up Harpenden Road (would you still be running then?) - have you found the Nickey Line yet, or Childwickbury (where Stanley Kubrick lived) - both good places for a leisurely run.

Am going to make the effort to get out every night this week except Friday when we are off into the big smoke for a nice evening with friends. Persistent rain here at the mo, though.

cestlavie · 19/12/2011 17:04

monkey, commute is fine.. still adjusting a little bit and missing London convenience (like just jumping on tube after a night out or catching a taxi home...)

You might well see me indeed on my run in the mornings! Ran in a little earlier than usual this morning as didn't have DD to drop off at nursery but will be on that road at least once a week at about 7.30 - 8.00 normally... probably be only doing that route once a week, most likely Monday's I suspect.

Have found the Nickey Line but LOL at leisurely runs! Would love to have the time to enjoy one of those! (PS any good restaurant recommendations in St Albans for DW's birthday later this monthy? Darcy's? Chez Mumtaj?)

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 17:21

yes, we have her little co-sleeper thingy propped up underneath with a pillow; putting her on her side seems to help a bit too (she can't roll over in this thing

well I reckon that if I am only going out 3 times a week they need to be quality rather than all easy miles

monkeyLFDTwench · 19/12/2011 17:26

Ah well I will definitely see you then cest, am driving along there with boring certainty every weekday - in a black VW Touran with three manic boys in the back. Honestly it's like Groundhog Day ... leave home 7.30, Old Albanian 7.36, Hatching Green roundabout 7.40 ...... will give you a bib if I think I spot you after the hols, maybe we need some secret mn wave or hand signal?!

Darcys is lovely, I had my 40th there haven't been back since after making a show of myself falling out of the stretch limo having had too much champagne. Chez Mumtaj used to be great, but has got a little bit iffy recently. Veer Dhara (opposite The Cock) is great, have never had a bad meal there and they are charm itself too and will make a fuss of your DW if it is her birthday. Lussmanns near the cathedral is very popular too.

orangeLFDThead · 19/12/2011 17:26

Glad the move went well cest
Glad dd1 went on ok at docs rhet and Smile that he waived the fee.

DrNortherner · 19/12/2011 17:33

Afternoon campers, how are we all? cest good to have you back, glad the move went well, we have missed a male perspective!

monkey I have used medised in the past for my ds, when he was younger than 6, it certainly did give him a good night sleep so I would use it in your circumstances, poor ds, hope he picks up soon.

fanny think I would shit my pants if horses were running alongside me in a field and you thought it was lovely?! I'd think they were after me.......

Must tell you the top I bought that I linked to is BLACK. You lot gave me a complex about pink running stuff Grin

Strength session for me tonight, then tomorrow is out festive run with the club. 90 min run out into the sticks (head torch a must!) and off to the pub at the end for beer and chips. What a great night!

Noway could I run 20 miles like fanny without fuel, I need a lucozade sport to do anymore than 10, though might start to try and wean myself off that.

Fanny, are you eating more now you have upped your miles. My weekly mileage has increased, although not like yours and I feel I am losing more weight and I don't want to. A couple of people have mentioned I look skinny and this morning I put on a pair of size 8 trews for work that I haven't worn in a while and they are dropping off me.....I don't want to be any thinner than I am but am not dieting so not sure what is going on........anyone else have this?

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 17:37

Dr No that happens to me when I go for higher mileage - I try to make sure that I compensate a bit by refuelling after longer runs....you can work out how much extra you are burning and add the equivalent into your diet -

DrNortherner · 19/12/2011 17:39

Thanks rhet, what would you eat after say a 8/10 miler to refuel?

monkeyLFDTwench · 19/12/2011 17:44

I think protein is good DrN, maybe a peanut butter bagel (which I would kill for - no nuts in this house sadly) or something with chicken or ham?

peachLFDTsmuggler · 19/12/2011 17:55

Ha ha DrNo, I was going to give you a ribbing about that top being pink, but filled with the Xmas spirit I decided to be kind!! Your headtorch/beer and chips run sounds like it's going to be fun!

Monkey, don't know anything about Medised but hope DS3 gets better soon.

fanny, am so impressed with your speed and fitness at the moment, not to mention your endurance. I think you can do sub 3.45, as you have ages to train yet abd will only get faster. Exciting times for you!

Cest, lovely to see you, sounds like life is a bit crazy, but glad you're fitting in some running!

More in a bit, DD2 awake!

Wheelybug · 19/12/2011 18:02

drno I seem to keep losing girth rather than weight (stays around the same on my highly sophisticated £2 ikea scales) but my clothes are getting bigger and people keep commenting. I am mostly wearing a size 6 (big disclaimer though - I am only 5 foot so am not as slim as that sounds and I'm certainly not skinny and you, drno, are way slimmer than me.) and it's getting trickier to find stuff to fit. Although at least being short I can get some stuff in the kids department.

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 18:05

yes I was going to give dr no a hard time about the pink factor as well...I'd eat something like a chicken salad sandwich and a handful of brazil nuts kit kat and crunchie bars Fruit smoothie with full fat yogurt (greek) will pack nutrients and calories - just remember that on a 10 mile run you will burn about 1000 cals, in addition to whatever your daily requirement is. Unless you eat shite it's surprisingly hard to get to 3000 cals. I am not prone to losing a lot of weight, but it has happened on occasion and I am too old to want to embrace the scrawny chicken look. It's a fine balance. I am now about 9 and half stone and reckon I could only really get away with losing about another 5 before I was moving beyond my natural body weight IYSWIM

headlamp run and beer sounds ace

I don't think fanny needs running club, at least not unless she is going pro...

monkeyLFDTwench · 19/12/2011 18:14

Hoping that's 5 lbs not stone rhet!

Very envious of those of you easily shedding weight, my body seems to cling to every last pound .....

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 18:18

yes, 5lbs. monkey I generally don't lose weight easily - not least because I hate giving up yummy things

Wheelybug · 19/12/2011 18:25

I don't lose weight v. Easily really monkey. Weight wise it has taken 2 years to lose a much needed 2 stone but as I say, I now seem to keep losing size rather than weight but that's on quite a bit of activity. I am quite a muscly bit though so will sadly never be skinny.

Mind you, it will a start piling back on again with the wine I keep drinking. I am going to go teetotal in January until after my half (although will allow myself champagne on dd1's birthday)

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 18:33

mmm Wine. Starting to feel my early start holding DD2 upright so that she could breathe better and DP could get some kip...

fannybanjo · 19/12/2011 18:52

Welcome back cest - shit that life gets in the way of running ain't it?! Thank you and yes, I've shifted the training up a notch. I'm not OTT though, still only 4 times a week. Just adding more speed work really and a longer LSR. Glad move went well. Smile

DrNo I'm on my borderline of looking ok/too thin but it is incredibly hard to eat healthily and maintain weight when you are slim naturally and run a lot. Plus harder sessions (which you're doing a lot of) burn far more calories than doing same mileage but slower. My only tip is eat nuts and seeds as high in calories and make sure you allow treats (chocolate etc) as you've earned them!

monkey it must be hard when you exercise so much and it's still a struggle to lose weight. Sad

rhet oh there's loads for me to learn from running club - aim is to be running with the men! My plan next year is to be comfortably running mid-distances in the 7.40m/m bracket. That's my biggest challenge really. I'll do it, it's just going to take perseverance! Well done you on very good run! See, your way is working also, it's just done differently to mine. I'm sure though the finished result is the same, we both will run faster at lower heart rates.

fannybanjo · 19/12/2011 18:54

Alcohol is main factor isn't it for weight. Everyone I know who is overweight drinks too much Wink

Wheelybug · 19/12/2011 19:01

Nope Fanny - the person I know with the biggest weight issues drinks almost the least of anyone I know. And my dh drinks a fair bit of wine and loses weight just breathing.

I think its just another calorific thing, no worse (or better) than anything of similar calories. Personally I'd rather have a glass of wine than a bar of choc.

rhetorician · 19/12/2011 19:04

fanny yes interesting that, isn't it? I did push up a bit with my pace today - the 7.10mm took me to about 171, which is still a good bit off my (predicted) max - it was tough, but not all out - I could have said 'let's'...'fucking'...'do'...'this'...out loud if I needed to

I could probably do with dropping drink for a bit - I drink about one unit every day - usually a glass of red (small, we bought these really nice little glasses in France one time, as opposed to the buckets larger ones you seem to get in IKEA here), or half a bottle of beer...but it is a treat to me

fannybanjo · 19/12/2011 19:09

wheely I think it's the snacks you want when drinking which add to it but in my experience, all my friends and family who are overweight do drink too much. However there are some skinnies who can drink or eat whatever they want! As you say though, calories are calories.
