Supposed to be working but could not resist challenge of new thread title!

OP posts:
rhetorician · 29/12/2011 21:06

plans for NY ? none whatsoever...everyone in the house being asleep at midnight would set the tone nicely for 2012!

must check out Mountain Buggy (this is occupying me nicely, this 'research' in the spare minutes between one chore or another)

stickyLFDTfingers · 29/12/2011 21:09

Grin shredme bastard lampposts!

rhet I share my surname with girls, but DP doesn't. Our surnames would also not exactly run off the tongue double barrelled (and then what would the girls do if/when they had children - triple barrel - quadruple barrel?). Like you say, it's the parenting wot counts in the end.

running hope the cheese was good, smelly and runny!! And that you did get some nice skiing in amongst all the lugging and dragging (sounds like a training holiday to become a warehouse operative!).

Happy anniversary ange! And yes, I had that experience with a gamekeeper "yes, you can walk across there, tho you might lose an eye or a knee of course" Angry. Apparently the fact it was the Greek Royal family was meant to make be feel better about it

liath · 29/12/2011 22:06

Oh dear shredme Grin!

Good luck for tomorrow, wheely. I'm sure all that marmite chocolate will give you wings.

10 days of no exercise and too much food and I've practically got a paunch!! However, my shin feels fine so I've started cross training and will probably try a little run next week. Fingers crossed!

peachLFDTsmuggler · 29/12/2011 22:15

Glad the shin ok liath. Don't talk to me about paunches. Tried on the trousers that MIL got me and, hurrah, they fit but my god, I have a bulging belly

DDs have both our surnames though sans hyphen. Agree that at the end of the day, is just a name. Like someone said, vast majority of children in this country do not have same surname as their mother. It matters not a jot to the relationship.

rhetorician · 29/12/2011 22:20

peach get thee behind that running buggy! DP says her tummy is all kind of spongy - dd1 takes great delight in saying 'oh, mummy, your belly button came back!' to her...I think DP might use the running jogger too - I am leaning towards the babyjogger - best compromise on price and availability

watching Life on Mars, eating mint choc buttons in front of a roaring fire (heating also fixed)

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 29/12/2011 22:41

Loved Life on Mars! We've just watched Great Expectations, nowDorian Gray. It's a classicfest here tonight!

sfxmum · 29/12/2011 22:52

hello all

shredme pesky lampposts Grin
ange happy anniversary
Peach I expect it will go soon, take the buggy for a spin
wheely good luck for tomorrow's run and yeah to Costa vouchers
DrN New Year's break sounds lovely
Rhet where i come from, children take the mother(maiden if married) and father's surnames, it is the norm

wave to everyone else hope you are well

I had the niece and nephew over, the other relatives could not make it but it was a very pleasant afternoon, dd is always delighted to see them, worships them and they indulge her, they are 18 and 20

no plans for tomorrow or New year apart from run a bit, we are starting to fret over the work situation, it seems worst now that it is near January, but hopefully we will both find something, it is very obvious the difference in the economic climate, even from this time last year.

rhetorician · 30/12/2011 09:53

morning all; sitting here in my running gear waiting for dd2 to wake up; I have to go to opticians (driving license) so will run there and back...am getting wise to the art of fitting the runs in (it will give me about 5k).

the BabyJogger FIT doesn't seem to be available through uk retailers, so I think it will have to be the summit. I've been reading stuff about not using them with newborns, although apparently you can use a car seat with them if you buy the (very pricey) adaptors

Wheelybug · 30/12/2011 10:26

12 miles done. 1 hr 46. All fine.

Now being punished by my family by having to go on a family trip to the cinema (i'm not v. Good at the cinema).

stickyLFDTfingers · 30/12/2011 13:22

great time wheely! You can have a nice snooze at the cinema.

Had intended to nip out this morning for an hour's trot, clothes all laid out and everything. But at the time I would have been admiring the early morning sun, I was slaving over a hot washing machine. Poo explosions by DD2 in the night. Luvverly... She's absolutely fine now. I feel like the living dead...

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 30/12/2011 14:13

No running here today but have spent 20 mins towing DD around the swimming pool so I'm sure that counts as cardio.

Wheely your 12 miles were only 4 mins slower than my 10 mile PB - well done. I know what you mean about cinema - I can't sit still for long enough. Much prefer to watch things at home on DVD (with subtitles) [old emoticon]

rhetorician · 30/12/2011 14:34

great time wheely knew it would seem easy. I went for 3 miles in just over 31 mins - but this is good pace for me, my race on Dec 3rd was about this pace, and suddenly it feels like easy pace rather than race pace. So as much short distance as I can manage is where I am, but I've now run 3 times this week, and done about 15 miles...less than I would like, but more than I might have expected.

ibbydibby · 30/12/2011 15:05

Dull day here, and I have the house to myself as I plan my 10 minute presentation for interview on Tuesday (gulp). Have been sitting at table for ages, not getting very far.

Good training session with club last night, but wind rather bitter. There were about 18 of us though, so a good crowd.

Rhet well done, sounds like you are getting into a good habit of getting out when you can, even if you are not doing as much as you would like.

LittleChief any exercise is better than none (well that's what I always tell myself...)

Wheely great time!

Sticky hope you have managed to get out, and DD2 ok now...

sfxmum my DS1 always loved seeing cousins, DS2 less so. DS1 has gone out to cinema with them, and high as a kite at the prospect (he is 15 now, and they are 24 and 23!!)

Peach am sure your "bulging belly" will soon be shrinking..

Shred sorry about lamp-post - v embarassing when you are with others! (and painful! ouch!)

Ange glad you had good opportunity to do some runs, and nice to have your dad with you. How is he doing? I love the companionship of having someone on a bike beside me for a long run. With DS1, he says very little, just odd comments such as "Oh good, lasagne for tea" (easily pleased is DS1)

Have entered 2 events so will add to list.

fannybanjo · 30/12/2011 15:06

Just quicky as busy busy busy but well done wheely great time, you'll nail a HM in a great time!

rhet what I think is happening here with your running is great - you're forced to do shorter runs in quicker times. You will reap benefits of this when you get back into longer runs. Yes, it's not the mileage you'd like but you're doing speed work in your own way.

Did two runs this morning Grin. Ran to my injured friends so did 6.30 miles in 50 mins (killer hill so splits are 5.5 miles at 7.45
m/m with 1 mile at 8.40 where hill was) then she ran the short route back to ours which we did slow as she's recovering. So that was another 4.62 miles at 9m/m pace. Good week of tempo running this week, I can feel myself getting far better at doing 7.40m/m pace for longer periods.

Hope everyone having good day and sticky Sad for your poorly DD and lack of run.

Rhet have pm'd you re job interview as per your suggestion a week or so ago. No worries if too late/no time to reply etc

OP posts:
rhetorician · 30/12/2011 15:26

ibby just off for eye test, but will have a look at some point this evening...:)

peachLFDTsmuggler · 30/12/2011 17:54

Wow wheely, good going. You know that's not too far off your GSR pace is it? Do you normally do your LSRs that fast? Am thinking you might be of the fanny school of running. Fast fast fast! Smile

ibby, good luck with the presentation. Best advice is to act confident and even if you are nervous it shouldn't come across. With interviews I used to try to think of them as me and them being on equal footing and the interview being a chance for us both to find out if we were a good fit for the job. It seemed to work!

sticky, hope DD and you ok after poo-gate!

chief, when you said towing I was thinking of a giant zorbing ball that I see pool attendants pulling up and down wiyh kids in them. I take it this was not the case...?

Rhet, defo see this as an opportunity for short speed, and tempo sessions, you'll get back to long mileage in good time Smile

on way back from Glasgow after lovely afternoon with Kate and friends (mine not hers!). Pishing doin here though. How I love this sling, it is literally the worlds finest invention.

rhetorician · 30/12/2011 18:26

which sling do you have peach - DP has a hotsling and a moby wrap - the former doesn't work that well for her (being larger breasted...) but the moby is quite good once you get the hang of the fabric.

Bit freaked out because (very nice) optician says she thinks I have high cholesterol (around 5) she said and that I should see my gp. This together with my family history (father dead from coronary heart disease at 45) puts me at high risk - eek, I've 2 tiny children. OTOH I exercise regularly (as you know), don't smoke, don't drink that much, and eat a fairly healthy diet (although I almost certainly eat too much butter, cheese, eggs etc). I am sure it will be fine - my resting heart rate is about 52 I think.

Am enjoying the faster runs (not least because it keeps raining!) and not leaving the family for too long at a time is also a good motivation. Oh well, at least the cholesterol thing means that running is now absolutely a necessity, not a luxury!

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 30/12/2011 18:31

No Peach - just my DD hanging onto my shoulder straps and pretending to help kick.

Try not to freak out Rhet - your healthy lifestyle counts for a lot more than cholesterol. As for diet, there is a fair mount of evidence that good quality fats (ie. free range eggs, grass fed dairy) are protective against heart disease compared with nasty manufactured 'healthy' spreads.

rhetorician · 30/12/2011 18:38

I'd rather have nothing than healthy 'spreads'...

sticky sorry about poo - dd2 turning out to be a mammoth-explosion-every-2nd-day kind of a baby.

DD1's nana just gave her a final Christmas present - sylvanian families - she LOVES it (background: nana always buys her things that we wouldn't dream of getting that turn out to be her favourite things ever). Yet more tiny bits of plastic that her elderly mothers will need their bifocals to be able to see. Gah.

peachLFDTsmuggler · 30/12/2011 18:57

rhet, how does the optician know??? Am a bit confused Hmm. agree on the healthy spreads. Boak!

DD1 was playing with the neighbours Sylvanian Families recently and was in raptures! They are right up her street.

Have got the hugabub which is exactly the same as a Moby wrap. Bloody brilliant. She slept 2 hours on way to friends and has now done another hour and a half on way back. Even at 6 weeks she feels quite bug in it. Not like a newborn anymore (blub). Have also got a ring sling and a Tomy front carrier for when she is bigger. DP also likes the front carrier as he thinks the hugabub is not very manly. Grin

sfxmum · 30/12/2011 19:16

hello
hope poorly little ones are feeling better

rhet my cholesterol is around that mark and has been for nearly 10yrs, however my GP says it is fine on balance, with the good cholesterol, and it is part and parcel of having PCOS, she does however think the weight should be kept down, on account of the risk of diabetes, although she thinks I should mostly be careful about the type of food I eat, stay away from simple sugars.
I think I need to make an effort this year to really drop a couple of sizes and make sure I keep it there
I use Pure soya spread and on occasion butter which I love,as well as cheese but will try to be as moderate as possible.

wheely great run good time, what did you go and see? we went to Arthur, we found it funny but dd was not that amused Hmm

Wheelybug · 30/12/2011 19:44

Thanks all for kind evincouraging words. peach I think my LSR are usually slightly faster than today but around that mark.

sticky hope dd2 ok.

rhet try not to worry. My bro had his over 40 health check thing recently and his cholesterol came out higher than that which was a shock for him as he runs marathons and is a bit obssessive with food. Turned out when they looked at it, it was his good cholesterol making it so high. Well done on the run. My bro tells me its the short faster runs that improve your speed so defo good training.

Cinema was fine although I agree chief I struggle to sit still for that long. I love theatre though but maybe that's ok because of the interval. We saw puss in boots sfx. It was ok but I wouldn't tell people to rush and see it.

Looks like I'm running back from our friends on new years day where we're celebrating tomorrow night. Shouldn't be too large a one as its my friend who had the liver transplant this time last year - she has decided to crack open a bottle of dom perignon that she won at a school fair just before she got ill. She hasn't drunk since she was ill (not drink related BTW). But still, I don't think we'll be largin' it Wink.

Enjoy your break away drno. I love going away like that for NY.

rhetorician · 30/12/2011 19:52

peach it's something to do with the blood vessels - they can pick up stuff by looking at your eyes because the vessels are so fine, I think. Good wake-up call for me, I think. It's very common and the correlation with heart disease is not absolute, but I also suspect that my blood pressure isn't all it should be either. There's a limited number of lifestyle changes I can make, although I'm sure there are some.

I think we will be getting Thai take-away for NY - not something we have gone wild over in recent years anyway...but 2011 turned out to be a good year for us Xmas Grin

wheely can't remember the last time we went to the cinema...
