Supposed to be working but could not resist challenge of new thread title!

OP posts:

Oh orangeyou were too quick for me - I asked how she knew (SIL was sniggering away behind her) and I got shot a look of pure evil and "you can just tell" .

I can only imagine their children were drinking non organic fruit drinks! She actually referred to them as poor little mites! Which is funny, as whenever we go to the shops ds3's first words as we pull into the car park are a hopeful "coffee and cake mummy?" Grin

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 17:20

glad to see everyone coming back - I didn't get out today - not sure why really as dd2 has been asleep since about 3.30. Am finding it much harder this time, the not running much. But am working on the running buggy/jogger idea - DP will want to get fit again too, so it will work for her as well. Plus I could run before picking up DD1 from nursery and the ones I am looking at would take a buggy board for when she starts moaning about having to walk she gets tired (it's exactly a mile from nursery to home: yes, I measured it on my Garmin Xmas Grin).

Things ok here - suffering from cabin fever and cold (heating broken, waited in all day for phone call for them to come and fix it- so they are actually related). DD1 and I resorted to running races up and down the road - some of them were run as horses, some as birds, and some as humans. Sure the neighbours are Xmas Confused

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 18:32

shred sympathies; other than the slight guilt, I don't think anyone's Christmas was the poorer for the lack of my mother's ranting about the africans in her local town, and how 'they are not poor people, you know, they are dripping with gold' Hmm...you should cheer yourself up with a look at this very funny thread about the foibles of the older person...

fannybanjo · 28/12/2011 19:28

Shock shred at your MIL - especially with regard to your DS's nut allergy. What does your DH say? DH did Shred yesterday, it was hilarious! He said its harder than an hours circuits class. Grin

rhet oh dear, the logistics of running with kids.... You'll work it out, honest! DD2 won't always be a teeny baby. Grin at racing with DD1!

orange how's your DB? Did you get on treadmill?

Did timed 6 miler before. 47mins. Whole minute faster than last timed one two weeks ago. Very hard last mile as horrific wind which took my pace from 7.40m/m to 8.30m/m so gutted as I know I could have done it in around 46.20. Hmm. I'm getting more efficient at running quicker. Aim is to tag extra 0.5 mile on every week at same pace.

sfxmum · 28/12/2011 19:44

shred Grin oh dear I guess she needs the certainty of her prejudices

orange ex sounds ever so slightly detached from factsHmm

I feel blessed to have reasonably sane relatives
That thread reth is light relief compared to another I can't help checking today but keeps making me sad, I hope it is some sort of troll

went out for a short jog, the plan is to do that daily but no timing until I can properly start a plan at the end of the first week of Jan

have family over tomorrow so will be cooking for all, will keep it simple, best to sit and chat

orangeLFDThead · 28/12/2011 19:50

rhet boys used to love doing things like that, well ds2 still does. Infact when we did 5k fun run in the summer he flapped his arms most of the way around pretending to fly Smile.
fanny Db doing not too bad hopefully going down in the morning, ds1 seems a bit better tonight. Just got back from gym. Before I went told myself to take it easy and just go slow which I did,had a bit of coughing fit mid way and had to take inhaler. Did 5k in just under 37 mins which annoyed me as over 6 mins slower than usual, even though I set the treadmill to a slower pace. Why am I being so silly? Think I need a slap.

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 19:57

orange I think you should go easy on yourself - you've been really unwell and you have a lot on your mind between db and ds1; we're not even into 2012 yet - or that's what I keep telling myself. Anyhow, this is the running buggy I'm thinking of getting (yay, more gear!) on the recommendation of a lady with the username buggyrunner - doesn't post here, but 'met' her on another thread

squix · 28/12/2011 20:36

Hello, season's greetings and all that Xmas Smile.

Hope everyone is feeling well and indulged an appropriate amount over the last few days. We had a lovely lunch on Christmas day at SILs, it was great as DD had several cousins to play with and this year they didn't find the paints and leave green handprints all over the walls of the bathroom! Also had a night off last night as DD was at a sleep over - so curry and cinema for me and DH.

Have managed a couple of runs - 4 miles on the 24th and 5 miles yesterday. Am planning on a trail run tomorrow to test out my new off road shoes, which were in the sale and I had a few vouchers to use as well. Although running tomorrow is weather dependant, its blowing a storm out there just now. I have some John Lewis vouchers too so am trying to decide between running kit, some fancy new make up or a slow cooker.

rhet buggy looks good. peach - bear suit - gorgeous.

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 20:45

shredme am just cackling anew at the Torygraph clippings - my mother does this too. She sent me a list of the names of children in some play who were at my old primary school (I am 45 and haven't lived near there for over 30 years!) really simply to make the point that lots of them had foreign names...

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 28/12/2011 20:46

Rhet we had the double Nipper Out n About (in fact still have it, we can't bear to get rid of it), lovely pushchair, great quality - never had a thing go wrong with it despite fairly robust treatment from ds1 and ds2. I never ran with the double, but used to walk miles and miles with it. Many happy memories - in fact I may be about to blub .....

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 20:51

ooh squix nice Xmas Envy

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 28/12/2011 20:55

Haha, at the foreign names! MIL was horrified at the group photo from ds1 and 2's classes from their old school - she actually gasped and said "but they're all Indian!" Now obviously not all the children are "Indian" as she put it, about half the classes were Asian, several other nationalities, mainly Greek, and Turkish, Eastern European, a typical North London school really. I find it bizarre that she could find that surprising in this day and age.

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 20:57

even when I was at primary school in SE london it was a mix of Irish, Pakistani, Turkish, Sikhs etc etc!

Wheelybug · 28/12/2011 20:59

Hi all

rhet - I had a go at running with a buggy and in fact, it was with an older version of that buggy (actually typed bugger then... Which is probably cos I was thinking about running with it) and I found it really hard. But, I was coming back to running from having a year off and been pregnant and was well out of shape but I found it really hard not using my arms. I thought it might be because the buggy wasn't actually a running buggy ..... I think my SIL has run with hers though (exact same buggy) but don't think that would be more than 5k. I am seeing her tomorrow so will ask her if I remember. I don't suppose you know anyone with similar so you could try it out? It was me finding it impossible that made me join a gym with a crèche as my way to run.

orange - I hope you get to see DB and that DS is well enough. What a twat your exh isSad but how great your DH is Smile

shred - your MIL sounds a hoot Hmm. Mine were full of daily Mail -esque opinions but it was ok because 'they are of a different generation' Confused

Well done on the speedy run fanny. I did 6 miles today too but took about 52 mins. I did 3 big hills though - 2 of were on my avoidance list until recently and I only had to stop to retch once so all good Grin Twinges in shins which I am still trying to ignore - LA LA LA. We then went to the panto which was pretty good... As these things go !

My family up for the day tomorrow - 13 of us in total but I told them I wasn't going to cook and we could go out to eat instead. much more normal in their opinions although I will have to listen to my brother's marathon training plan in detail.

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 21:06

hmmm, hard to know without trying; I did run a few times with our i-candy which wasn't easy, but as you all know I am not super-speedy...I suppose I could go up to the next level and get a babyjogger, but no-one in Ireland seems to stock the running ones...I'd probably not do much more than 5-6 miles with it, and do my longer runs without it. SO many decisions!

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 21:07

would be v. grateful for your SIL's take on it wheely - thanks

squix · 28/12/2011 21:17

rhet - will let you know how they perform tomorrow & I got a free pair of socks as well. I have never had black runners before - I hope they will be a brown muddy colour before long Grin.

Am impressed with all the running with buggys, I suppose it makes sense to train with a buggy, then a race would seem easy in comparison. And I seem to remember you can run with a buggy in Parkruns too.

Wheelybug · 28/12/2011 21:28

Nice shoes squix

I also meant to say, for the kindle owners around there is a running biog in the 12 days of Christmas sale thing. Can't remember what it's called 'Run!' I think by an ultramarathoner. Can find it if anyone's interested. I may well use a pound or two of my gift card to get it!

stickyLFDTfingers · 28/12/2011 21:49

hello all, hope you had good times this Christmas (relatives permitting) and Santa brought all the right things!

Orange your DB sounds such a fighter, beating the odds for so long. Hope things improve for you all and DS is feeling better.

Great to hear about the running (and well done DrNo on the race!).

I got a garmin!!! :) :) And I've used it twice. Got out for a quick 5k on Christmas day (pre garmin), 5 miles on Boxing Day and another 5 miles today. Good running with DB, he makes me run faster. But that wind (external, not internal Wink) is a killer of speed. Not to mention the breathing difficulties it causes... But still thrilled with the garmin :) :)

squix · 28/12/2011 22:02

sticky - brilliant, welcome to a world of obsessing with numbers!

rhetorician · 28/12/2011 22:37

god I'm tired - dd2 has been howling nearly all evening, and there are still 6 full days before dd1 can go to nursery...had been hoping for a little bit of family support, but nada, not even a phone call! am starting to freak out about the work that I have to get done. Oh well, I suppose it will get done, not well, but done...

DrNortherner · 28/12/2011 23:11

Evening all, on ds's iPod touch so just testing really....nifty this mn app. Planning a 6 miler tomorrow, then we are away a few days over new year, staying in a cottage with friends so will get to fit some runs in, then back on the training in jan ready for my half in march.

Badger, congrats on your news Smile
Rhet, sorry you feel so knackered. 2 little ones must be exhausting, but it will get better.

Right, off to sleep now. Night all.

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 29/12/2011 08:46

Thanks for the Kindle heads up Wheely I might have a read of that. (If anyone else is interested it is "Run" by Dean Karnasez (sp?))

Rhet - re buggies - you might need to alter your gait slightly (esp if you are tall) with the Nipper as it has a bar fairly low to the ground that your feet might strike. I have run with a Phil & Teds which was a similar shape and occasionally clipped my toes on the rear axle. You need to be able to fix the front wheel to non-swivel otherwise it wobbles. I found the Phil & Teds fine for general jogging but anything faster than 9.30min/miles-ish and it tended to jiggle a bit. Adding a buggy board will also add another shin bruising obstacle unless you can remove it completely when not in use.

I also briefly had a 2nd hand BabyJogger (the front axle broke - grrr) which was raised at the back so you could take longer strides. The BabyJogger was much better for running - really smooth and easy to push - but a bugger to go round tight corners due to the large fixed front wheel. Both had the added benefit of toning arms!

Planning to head to the gym today for a radio 4 assisted long slow run with no hills.

peachLFDTsmuggler · 29/12/2011 09:47

orange, if you are on the way to see DB, hope all is well.

sticky, congrats on the garmin!!

rhet, I think this is the daddy

not cheap but I imaging resale value will be decent. Am still toying with idea but am going to see how it goes over next few months first. Am going to run with my Jane Powertrack 360, but probably for max of 5k round park.

Had crazy day yesterday of visiting 3 lots of people. Nice but a bit hectic so chilling out today. T'is very wet here. Yesterday I barely ate any real food at all, but mainly consumed cake Blush

squix · 29/12/2011 11:06

I can report new shoes are ace (did 3.8 miles on a trail with about 10 mins of some hill repeats in the middle). Was very wet and my feet stayed dry. I don't know if it was all in the mind, but I felt more sure footed on the slippy bits than normal. Got the best part of the day, the rain just stopped, the sun came out, the trail was next to the water - the only pther person I saw was a man with his dog called Simon.
