All ye fine runners who wish to get together to discuss running-related topics, or otherwise, come and join us here. We are a friendly and incredibly supportive group of runners, varying in ability, but all bonded together by a common theme of loving running, committed to squeezing it into our busy lives and wanting to improve our own PBs. So whether you are a full-time mum, part-time working mum, full-time working mum, working from home mum, mum who is studying, or even a dad Grin, add your race to the list so you can be sure of some moral support and advice along the way. And if you aren't racing, don't worry as you can enjoy the race reports and race vicariously.

cross posted rhet. the first few days can be hell. We sometimes calmed dd1 down with a tiny amount of boiled cooled water in a bottle. But I am aware that this could be a completely outdated tactic (dd is 11). funnily enough though dh phoned the hospital in desperation - and this
is what they suggested. my mum said "oh yes, that's what we did, but I didn't dare suggest it in case it was now outdated" Grin

Hatwoman · 07/12/2011 22:33

fanny has reminded me - a knuckle to suck also did the trick.

sfxmum · 07/12/2011 22:36

Re Cilla Black, I once had regular dealings with a relative of hers, who worked in television ans loathed her with a passion

rhet sorry, early days settling takes some getting used to, you are likely right, and just needs to ride it out

fannybanjo · 07/12/2011 22:36

DD1 spent weeks screaming at night and it wasn't colic - it was simply over tiredness.
I just stayed calm and lay her on me. Any jiggling or too many people just exacerbated it. She'll calm down the more calmer the surroundings from my experience but obviously all babies are different.

sfxmum · 07/12/2011 22:37

what fanny said, used to work for dd too

fannybanjo · 07/12/2011 22:38

Villain Black is a c*nt and I reserve that word for only a select few.

AngeChica · 07/12/2011 22:42

hello. I think I have just about warmed up now. DS' school made us queue for half an hour in the cold to get in to see his nativity today. My first one! Unfortunately he fell off the stage just before the preformance began , cried and spent the rest of the show looking entirely bemused. That's my boy. They demoted him to the back where I couldn't see him after that. Then out with dog; felt very chilly despite being wrapped up warm. Then, winter series pace race at my new RC tonight. Only 2.4 miles but straight into wind at draughty industrial estate was a fairly miserable experience. I think I might have come in last, hard to tell as handicap starts, but only a few secs behind my group, I didn't disgrace myself. I just want to be sprinting past like fanny, though! Has taken a pot of chilli and an unusal midweek glass of red Wine to thaw me out.

great long run sticky

adorable baby photos on FB?

yes Rhet I was rubbish after DS, I didn't dare make a cuppa til I discovered the moby sling; it was an effing godsend.

Orange my GP told me wouldn't get any help on the NHS due to our age and the fact we already have one child. Hmm I do wonder if a second opinion would have been different or if it is a postcode lottery.

monkey :) at poo picture love toilet humour in this house.

PS Everywhere has toned up except my tummy you're all going to tell me to do the 30 day shred now aren't you?

rhetorician · 07/12/2011 22:56

think it's deffo tiredness, she'll suck on my little finger and that sometimes works. She's had lots of big sister attention today Hmm plus she is more alert...they're in bed in the dark now - thanks for suggestions. She'll be hungry again soon...

fannybanjo · 07/12/2011 23:03

hat fantastic re course and pony! DD will absolutely love the pony. Whether you'll love the law course... So January a huge month for you. Oi, get thee out running ASAP! No such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. Being a hard as fuck bitch, only torrential rain stops me but that's more because my mascara runs rather than scared of getting wet. Wink. Wind is great for fitness!

fannybanjo · 07/12/2011 23:05

Ange oh no at DS having stage dive! Was he ok? Don't be daft re run tonight, few hours behind then maybe disgrace but few seconds...? Sounds hard but good. You getting miles in for VLM?

DebiTheScot · 07/12/2011 23:06

Ange my tummy is the only untoned bit too. I liked monkey's comment the other day about having a perfect 6 pack under the flab Xmas Grin
Your poor ds, good job they don't remember being embarrased for long at that age.

Meant to say earlier fanny I think the trax arrived today but were taken to post office depot. Hopefully dh will get them on Fri when he's going to see ds nativity and going for lunch with friends working from home.

I finally got the label bits out of my leggings seam and marked the graphs. Bedtime now.

Laughing at the 2 pairs of numptys on million pound drop who lost all their money on easy Q1s.

fannybanjo · 07/12/2011 23:09

rhet calm down, calm down, calm down strangely was my mantra when mine were very little and still is now if kids are being bastards. Grin Calmer you are and more hushed and quiet your voice and surroundings, then they tend to chill out quicker. However only 1% of my demeanour follows this through, the rest is fucking maniacal. Hopefully A will drop off. Too much stimulation is a killer. Thinking of you both.

ibbydibby · 07/12/2011 23:12

Fanny do the race..!

Rhet, DS1 was an evening howler. DH and I used to take it in turns to sit on our bed, slumped against pillows so that chest at 45 (ish) degree angle to bed. Then lay DS on tummy and rub back. Well it worked for us. Another trick was to lay him on his tummy the length of my forearm so that his head was in the crook of my elbow and his bum nestling frontwards in my hand (so that my fingers were round his buttocks). Oh dear. The more I try to explain it the worse it sounds.

I think possibly these positions made his tummy more comfortable - pressure forcing wind up? Or down? Or somewhere.

fannybanjo · 07/12/2011 23:14

Let's hope Debi it ain't snowing on Friday and DH can get there without his Snow Trax! Ah yes, nativity - I spent entire hour sat on stage with DD3 during theirs yesterday as she was hysterical. A shepherd she ain't. A shirker she is. However DD2 was ace. Only saw the back of her though. These are the memories that I will throw at them when they bring back their first boyfriends gobshites

fannybanjo · 07/12/2011 23:15

ibby YES the lay across you, tummy down rub!! It works!

sfxmum · 07/12/2011 23:25

ibby i have a picture of me with dd in a very similar position, she looks like a cross between baby monkey and a baby koalaGrin

sfxmum · 07/12/2011 23:27

dd's Nativity (of sorts) is next wed&Fri we each go on different days as only 2 tickets per family.
this year she has lines
2 years ago Mary and Joseph threw the baby at each other then dumped him in the cot and ignored him

backwardLFDTpossom · 07/12/2011 23:32

rhet hope you get a good night!

peach thinking about your family today.

Ange yes, 30 Day Shred is wonderful!

Am hoping to be able to contribute a bit more after this week is done. Am so busy and stressed because of it all at the moment. Have a spottier forehead than I ever had as a teenager... stress spots are bloody painful, too! Anyway, a couple of things. I have just finished the job application I've been working on and I'm rather pleased with it. Am shitting myself about telling my boss that I've applied for another job. Have that joy tomorrow. I got my OU assignment back and scored 97% (!) but have another one due in in 5 weeks' time. Boo. Have a tutorial tomorrow evening, too... Everything is getting on top of me a bit and the weather being as it is, I'm not getting my running to clear my head. I did however, spend a lovely half hour yesterday sitting in Starbucks with a gingerbread latte while the boy was at nursery. Bliss.

Sorry for self-centred whinge. Hope all is well in rubbing land.

peachLFDTsmuggler · 08/12/2011 06:19

Aww ange, bless your little DS, hope he was ok. We have pre-school nativity play this Sunday at the church . DD1 is an angel

Rhet, too late now but definitely second skin to skin in bed. Hope you guys had a good night after difficult evening.

Debi, oh dear, does sound like a lot of manage at once but concentrate on the positives, that's an amazing mark for your assigemt and good job on the solitary coffee Wink. Tomorrow is another day eh?

hat, great news on pony and new career! Scary but definitely exciting and brave and bold. Good for you!

Really hope my trax arrive today so I can scuff my floorboards up with them wear them round the house and pretend am a proper runner Wink

spoke to bruv last night and he said all had gone well at the funeral. Dad hadn't wanted to be alone later so they all went out for family dinner. Am so lucky to have so many siblings, but really I just want to move back there. Anyway....

Right, after DD1 dropped at playgroup and K hopefully asleep this morning I WILL spent a couple of hours drooling over Toby Stephens in Jane Eyre DVD write effing Xmas cards.

What did I do while bf DD1 at night without an iPhone??? T'is unthinkable now...

peachLFDTsmuggler · 08/12/2011 06:21

Sorry possum, not Debi

fanny, great news about your cousin, and brilliant about his trip, sounds like an awesome guy!

peachLFDTsmuggler · 08/12/2011 06:27

ibby, tell me the post it note wasn't on his forehead??? Wink

Debi, ouch to label injury! Well done getting out though, is very cold, even in the house! You have made me think a body warmer would be a good running investment. Also will need long joggers or something for January as my running tights are size 10, and I am..errr...not, shall we say!

Right, might try and get this snoring baby back in basket.

bonkersLFDT20 · 08/12/2011 06:41

How was your night Rhet. Indeed, the new newborn sleepy phase often doesn't last longer than a couple of days - just long enough for you to fall completely in love and to feel smug about what all the fuss is about!

My advice would be just to go with it. It can be very, very hard to fathom what's up, so just keeping the baby with the nursing Mum is probably the best thing. Your job is then to look after your DP (and I bet you're a hell of a lot better at that than alot of blokes!).

Oh, little one up. Duty calls.

Hope you all get lots of rubbing in today!

rhetorician · 08/12/2011 07:58

thanks ladies; she did go to sleep then from about 11.30-3, fed, asleep again from 4 (maybe?) to 7.30. So just have to try and stop her getting too wound up.

Foul day - high winds, driving rain, the lights are all flickering. No running for me today. Hope it's most amenable where you are

monkeyLFDTwench · 08/12/2011 08:02

Rhet any signs of thrush?

fannybanjo · 08/12/2011 08:48

rhet glad she didn't howl all night. I'd start a bedtime routine straight away with her, bath maybe and sit in low light with no TV blaring or start putting her down in your bedroom in her basket at a similar time to DD1. I did the whole bouncing DD1 around until we went to bed, believe me, I paid for it. Next two were in quiet rooms (if they were asleep) from very early on. They need the down time. I always view it "would I want to start my nights sleep lying on the sofa with TV on and people chatting". Babies are human after all!! I'd also do all evening feeds in the bedroom. It was hard but worth it as I had three breastfed babies who slept well and with
DD2 and DD3 we had our evenings back quite quickly (I did however co-sleep!!)
