All ye fine runners who wish to get together to discuss running-related topics, or otherwise, come and join us here. We are a friendly and incredibly supportive group of runners, varying in ability, but all bonded together by a common theme of loving running, committed to squeezing it into our busy lives and wanting to improve our own PBs. So whether you are a full-time mum, part-time working mum, full-time working mum, working from home mum, mum who is studying, or even a dad Grin, add your race to the list so you can be sure of some moral support and advice along the way. And if you aren't racing, don't worry as you can enjoy the race reports and race vicariously.

rhet have a great time on the run tomorrow, and very Xmas Envy of your mug prize. So much more showing off potential with that!

MoshiMoshi · 02/12/2011 22:05

Plug it into macmillan fanny to check, although i think you can reduce by 60-90 secs per mile for a race if properly tapered.

fannybanjo · 02/12/2011 22:05

sticky you can do anything if you truly have the desire to. To do it to the best of your ability is what takes grit. You have that so just fucking do it!

fannybanjo · 02/12/2011 22:06

Hahaha Moshi at moi doing an 8m/m marathon...,

fannybanjo · 02/12/2011 22:09

I do however want to thank all you wonderful people as I seriously doubt I would even be doing half the rubbing I am without your rubbing advice and support.

N4NNY · 02/12/2011 22:09

rhet I've got 2 Santa runs this weekend. I've not added them or my Brighton half on the list cos I'm usually on my phone. Tomorrows Santa run is a bit of a jolly with my running "school" running around the downs dressed as Santa then to the pub for lunch. Sunday's is a charity Santa run for a children's hospice. really need to pick up my distance again but seem to have lost my love of running. I really seem to struggle for the first 2-3 miles then I get into it and start enjoying it more.

peachLFDTsmuggler · 02/12/2011 22:14

18 miles at 9.21 fanny??? You are going to eat that marathon up and shit it out lady!!!

Debi, I'd skip it. No point doing a parkrun under the weather, just wait till next week. Hope you feel better soon.

Master, I tried to take some time to myself this morning to (gulp) have a bath while DD1 was at pre-school. Took K downstairs for DP to look after her. Was in bath for about 5 minutes then heard him grimacing over dirty nappy. K evidently then wee'd on the changing mat and DP came charging upstairs to tell me she was covered in "piss and shit", then went back and started slamming doors. Had to get out of lovely bath to go downstairs to tell DP to stop being a dick and stop slamming doors around the baby. He is no use to anybody when he doesn't get enough sleep, whereas I am supposed to just carry on as normal i.e. doing every-fucking-thing, on 3 or 4 hours sleep a night. Grrrrrrrrr.

stickyLFDTfingers · 02/12/2011 22:17

on the subject of running and tolls libel etc, have you seen funny autocorrects I have been crying with laughter here...

rhetorician · 02/12/2011 22:21

N4NNY good luck - pub lunch sounds lovely...and the other one is a great cause (I think my sat one is for children with Epidermolysis Bullosa - a severe skin condition)

I generally struggle with the first 2+ miles at least - it seems to take me as long as 25 mins to settle (and my heart rates bear this out too) into a good pace. So maybe go for a slightly longer distance and try not to worry about pace for the first 20 mins or so. If I stick to a slow pace at the start, it's easier to get warmed up.

sticky - yes, I think it's helpful to talk to people who think that running is normal, rather than extreme - I am really conscious of this given the news here this week, which is that 25% of 3 year olds are overweight or obese. Yes, you read that right, 3 year olds. I immediately conceded to the desire of mine to ride her bike up and down outside, despite the wind, rain and cold...

fannybanjo · 02/12/2011 22:27

peach glad your dad seemed ok. Re your DH - men can't cope full stop. DH rang me today to ask what was for kids tea. I was in middle of shopping on the only day I have had to myself for months.. I said "err dunno, how's about you cook something?" - phone goes quiet. Text from DH half an hour later "just in Nandos".

monkey Fanny Pong is ace! I am considering a name change...

sfxmum · 02/12/2011 22:27

N4NNy good luck for the Santa runs

fanny great distance fab pace

peach in the realm of unfairness that is pretty unfair, tell him to man up, it is just a nappy, don't get out of the bath next time, what is the worst that can happen? granted it will not be a very relaxed bath but maybe the next few ones will be

stickyLFDTfingers · 02/12/2011 22:29

rhet and N4NNY I definitely need 4k to warm up (which is tricky if I'm doing a 5k!). Today it was so cold my hands didn't emerge from my sleeves for 2 miles.

Hope you have fun N4NNY

peach grrrr indeed.

Wheelybug · 02/12/2011 22:30

cherry you asked about the Tri book - it's here www.amazon.co.uk/Zest-Triathlon-Made-Easy-Magazine/dp/1843404338/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3CA76M6PCNIX2&colid=38ENDPST9DTO9.

Well done on 18 miles fanny!

Good luck in your Santa runs N4NNY !

Wheelybug · 02/12/2011 22:31

peach that sounds rubbish re DP. Remind him the poo will only get worse .....

rhetorician · 02/12/2011 22:36

peach you poor thing - DP and I have just had a most frank useful conversation about how we are going to have to be a bit a lot less bad tempered with one another this time round. I was a grumpy git, but I did at least do a good bit - took the view that DP was feeding the baby and everything else was my job.

sticky top layer came off at about the 4k mark today - the Lidl gloves proved to be excellent on first outing - one layer, not too hot, easy to tuck into waistband when no longer needed. They have a key pocket and everything!

stickyLFDTfingers · 02/12/2011 22:45

ooh rhet I was very tempted by those gloves (with the key pocket and everything :)), but having got the top (which is also very good and has become a favourite) and the hat (also on this evening), I thought I'd better stop.

Those of a Lidl persuasion, apparently in the Torygraph this weekend you get a £10 off at Lidl voucher (so you're £8 up). You can always go to the corner shop in disguise and recycle it immediately...

peachLFDTsmuggler · 02/12/2011 22:51

He is a bit OCD when it comes to pee/poo e.g. When DD1 wets herself he puts her in the bath Hmm. But that's no excuse for slamming doors. I was soooooo annoyed. rhet, you are right, feeding a baby can be a full time job at times, sounds like you have the right attitude, but then you are a woman, so of course you do!

Lol at fanny's DH. Jesus wept!

peachLFDTsmuggler · 02/12/2011 22:54

Oh and I know someone in RL called Fanny! She is a friend of a friend and is south American so guess it doesn't induce sniggers in grown men and women there.

rhetorician · 02/12/2011 22:55

I was so bloody grateful that I didn't have to do it that I would have done almost anything! A lactation counsellor once asked if I had considered getting the lactation drugs Shock - not on your life...

N4NNY · 02/12/2011 23:05

Thank you guys it so good to hear I'm not the only one who struggles the first few miles. I actually Hate running for those few miles and just want to give it up but once I've passed it and have a good run maybe got a PB if I'm doing parkrun I love the high I get so I stick at it. I try what you suggest rhet and take it easier to start and see what happens "whisper" maybe I should leave Gary (garmin) at home and run naked.

Themasterandmargaritas · 03/12/2011 04:31

N4NNNY I too dislike the first few miles, I don't really get into my pace until about 6k in. You could run nekkid every other run. Grin Have you managed to find another job? Good luck today.

Enjoy the run today Rhet.

18 miles, pah, fanny you are just another Moshi in the making. Envy

Peachy that is totally rubbish. He really must man up. Dh changed the nappies but then always put them on wrong so I would end up doing it.Hmm Remember the first 6 weeks are the worst, both of you on no sleep, a toddler sensing all your tiredness and playing on it, as well as everything going on with your dad and his wife. Don't be too hard on each other, keep telling each other how you feel if you can, and don't do too much. Ask people to take dd for lunch after pre-school.

As for working, I work full-time but the traffic is so bad I have to start early (7am) and finish at 3.30 at which point I dash off to school to pick up dc 1&2, so then come home and do my mummy bit with them and dc3 who has been home since lunchtime. There's not much time to fit in a run especially as it is dark by 6.30pm so rely on the weekends. DH is great about the running as he used to run alot, but he travels a great deal and is currently away. He has also started to do more of the school runs in the morning, which has meant he has had to do more childcare and organising of school bags, not to mention school gate meeting and greeting, which he never did before! Of course I have help in the house during the week and she works every other weekend. I still feel guilty about both going back to work and the running, but I realise I am a much better mummy for it.

Grey clouds outside and it is totally sodden. Mud, mud, mud everywhere...

peachLFDTsmuggler · 03/12/2011 05:19

Thanks master, you are right.

N4NNY, I usually find he first 15 mms quite tough and then hit my stride.

As to fitting in runs, well, we'l have to see how that works! Am SAHM with one pre-schooler and one teeny tiny baby! Plan is this initally. Run once at weekend. Run on Thursday with pram on way to powerpramming and also during. Run on Tuesday (?) with pram in park while DD1 at pre-school. Will have to see how running goes with current pram but may treat myself to proper jogging pram in few months time. Also depending on when/how DD2 is sleeping might be able to get out one evening a week when DP gets home. In summer might go out afte DDs in bed. We shall see!

ibbydibby · 03/12/2011 06:46

Good luck today Rhet hope you get to do the run. Good luck for your 2 Santa runs N4NNY. Did one of these last year, loved the spectacle of all those red suited runners charging down the road, made some good photos. It's not on this year, sadly.

Love the sound of "powerpramming" Peach. There was a bloke doing the parkrun once, one child in buggy (think a v young baby but can't remember) plus another one in backpack. The one in the backpack was wailing its head off...next time I saw him (same run) he only had the buggy.

Re getting warmed up, do any of you try to do this before a race starts? Rather than relying on warming up as race proceeds? I'm not very good at doing this, I sort of jog/twitch around nervously before a race.

Sorry about bad weather Master

No parkrun for me today as too bunged up, coldy, throaty etc.

N4NNY · 03/12/2011 08:04

master no job yet getting fed up now :( there just isn't many full time jobs around but hopefully one will appear soon.

peachLFDTsmuggler · 03/12/2011 08:29

Powerpramming is ace ibby, I've done it from when DD1 was 4 months old till when I was 6 months pregnant with DD2. It's a mixture of running (or walking) and resistance exercises. Can't wait to get back to it in January. Also the woman who takes the class is a running friend and so it's good for feeling all inspired for races!

Sorry about the job situ N4NNY, hope you get something soon. Enjoy your Santa runs, sounds great fun!
