Oh and DD2's twattish lurverly Tinkerbell boots have practically collapsed after 24 hours of solid wear...GrinAngry. Tomorrow, if you are in Chester Disney Store, look out for a crazed blonde woman with a red haired child explaining to the robots who work in there that - yessss they are play boots and not for going out on bike and scooter Wink however £20 for 1 days wear is scandalous!

fannybanjo · 11/09/2011 22:06

science on looking at your times you are similar to me however your LSR runs are roughly a minute per mile too fast. However if you are fit and well and not burned out - can't see how it matters. However I'd burn out doing LSR at that pace - in fact, I did used to and did tire myself out over time. Maybe drop pace a bit on them - I assume you have a Garmin? GrinWink

fannybanjo · 11/09/2011 22:11

Plus your steady runs could probably be bit slower too? I do short tempos at around 7.30 (5k) - longer tempos around 8.00
(however hate those so not often...!) Steady run would be 8.30 and LSR around 9.30 (do progression also, last few miles at steady pace). Intervals between 6.30 and 7.20 depending on how far. Smile

stickylittlefingers · 11/09/2011 22:27

Well done N4NNY and Cest, sounds like it was pretty warm in Bristol. Could you send a bit of that up this way please?

Debi that's brilliant! That is a really impressive result.

You have a way with words Fanny - PMSL at that turtle... An advantage to running out in the countryside with lots of high bracken about Wink. And give 'em hell about the Tinkerbell boots - Disney need to be told not to sell tat at high profits (I think York is our nearest Disney store, thank God).

Rhet - Seabrooks, snv. Marathons!

fannybanjo · 12/09/2011 09:07

sticky I have a "crude" way with words unfortunately! I have been quite subdued on here whilst I was getting to know you all but the real Fanny will emerge over time. My brother say's I am the female Howard Stern.... Hmm Tapering week my dear, tapering week - what are your training plans for this week?

Rhet and sticky I am planning on entering Great Manchester Marathon BUT will see how I survive GNR next week - I have a feeling (although have trained well) that I am going to be shocked at how much harder it is to "race" the 13.1 miles rather than LSR it. So ladies, considering you are both race veterans, definitely go for it.

peachsmuggler · 12/09/2011 09:21

Great results Cest, N4NNY, Moshi, and Debi, well done everyone! Aww Moshi, frustrating, that 1 second, but an utterly awesome time all the same.

Rhet, the Dublin marathon gets a good rep. Is that an option. Is it October??

rhetorician · 12/09/2011 10:15

peach yes, always the October bank holiday weekend (yes, I know you don't have one!). My neighbour is doing it this year, having not started running at all until January. He's hoping for sub 4 hour...

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 12/09/2011 10:38

getting from zero to sub 4 hours in 10 months would be pretty impressive... I'd be more of a sub5 myself I think!

Fanny - you tell it like it is, no (erm) fannying around! I'm kind of seeing how it goes this week. I just went out for an hour's walk after dropping the girls off, to try and walk off the aches and pains (I tried the sitting around eating crisps approach yesterday, but it didn't work. Was fun though!). I hope it's less windy on Sunday - it's ridiculous at the moment. Running into it would be no fun at all. So the "sort of" plan is a 45 min or so slow run tomorrow, same time but more tempo running on Wednesday, nothing Thursday, another on Friday just see how I feel - then Sat is deffo a sitting around eating crisps day. How about you? Hope you're off the ironing at least!

stickylittlefingers · 12/09/2011 10:42

oh and I'm well into the mental training too! Imagining myself feeling like crap and wanting to jog, having a word and getting on and lengthening that stride. Gowaarn Sticky! The 2:15 medal of honour awaits... Grin

peachsmuggler · 12/09/2011 10:42

An end of Oct Marathon sounds good. Yes you would have to train a lot of training would have to be done in September but the reeeeaaaaaly LSRs would be done in Sep/Oct.

Sub 4 after 10 months, wow, that would be impressive!

encyclogirl · 12/09/2011 10:49

No time to post, save for this.

Rhet speaks the truth. Tayto Cheese and Onion crisps are the best crisps in the world. Fact.

PS: Amazing running in races peeps. You are my motivation. Rubbish weekend, zero running accomplished. Managed to squeeze in a 30 Day Shred level 3 last night. Back on plan this week. Tues, Thurs and Sat.

Great North Run is coming up. How exciting!!!

Fanny you kill me Grin

cestlavie · 12/09/2011 10:57

Well done N4NNY and orange for you races. Sounds like it was hot down in Bristol.

Sorry you didn't get under 20 mins moshi. Obviously still a blindingly quick time but know those time lines are important pyschologically, even if you only miss by a second or two.

Well done too debi - that's a fantastic finishing position!

Quick HM race report from me from Sunday.

Had been thinking about race strategy quite a bit going into the race as is quite a hilly run, with the hills from Mile 5 - 9. Main bit being trying to figure out how fast to go over first 5 miles so I could lose time going slowly over the hills but not go so fast that I was knackered by the time I got to the hills...

Very popular race - 15,000 runners so start was a bit of a bun fest with lots of stop/ starting and people weaving in an out of each other for first half mile which was annoying but made you go in slowly rather than set off too fast.

Ran the first 5 miles at about 8.10 m/m average which felt fine and deliberately kept pace down a bit so felt I was running within myself rather than pushing it. Next 5 - 9 miles were a mix of hills and on the ups, dropped the speed right back to +9.00 m/m so finished each hill feeling okay - also gave myself about 100m recovery at top of each hill rather than immediately scampering off. Came out of the hills at about 8.40 m/m average.

From then on was mainly trying to figure out when to try and kick for home. In the end left it until about 11 miles to go up to 7.45 m/m - could probably have done it sooner on reflection but not much and last mile was pretty hard work. Finished in PB of 1.47 which was pleasing... No more races for me til next year either!

science - know you were asking about stuff cos you're aiming for under 1.50. Think main things for me (purely personal) were:

  • know the race course (especially topography) in advance so you can plan a race strategy - I had target m/m for each section
  • listen to your body AND your Garmin/ Runmeter - I definitely felt I could have gone faster at the start so it was really helpful to have the Runmeter to keep it in check
  • go slow where you need to and don't worry about losing time on those bits if the rest is going okay

Hope everyone's getting suitably excited about GNR!

rhetorician · 12/09/2011 11:06

well if I go for end of Oct, then (fingers crossed) things will have settled down in our household; I am also due a semester's leave, which at least means more flexibility. I can't believe I am contemplating this. Seriously.

Great run into the wind this morning - goodish paces (for me) for easy running, trying to work out logistics of running home from work - running in too complicated - but still need coats, keys, phones, money, laptops etc to be in the right places...might cure me of my evening working habit though :o

must press on - now have to cycle through the gusts

well done to all the weekend racers - great achievements all round. Am vicariously excited about GNR as well -

sticky that Kielder marathon looks fab...hmm

OP posts:
YeahThatsTheBadger · 12/09/2011 11:09

Well done moshi, cest, debi and n4nny!

No running for me this weekend as we were looking after MIL so that FIL could have a well deserved break. And we took our chimney breast and stack down so I was labourer for the day. I ached yesterday!

And peach helped me to bite the bullet and put dd in a big bed last night. She stayed in it and stayed asleep. Phew! Grin

Now ds is back at nursery this week i'll hopefully be able to get out for a run in the day cos i'm really not enjoying this treadmill malarky.

rhet I will back you up on Tayto's being the best crisps. Off to Donegal on wednesday and plan to stuff my face!

And talking of ambitious new runners-my cousins dh starting running before christmas last year with no particular goals except fitness but can now run 5k in 17:38 and just finished his first half marathon in 1hr 26. I'm not jealous (!) Envy

YeahThatsTheBadger · 12/09/2011 11:15

Oh and well done orange too!

rhetorician · 12/09/2011 11:40

badger grr, that's a bit galling, isn't it? oh well, there's a place in the world for us plodders too

Pawsnclaws · 12/09/2011 11:46

Hi all, just wanted to drop in and say hello!

I'm still here, just having a bit of a love/hate thing with my running at the moment and not feeling much of a "real" runner.

Anyway, I'm down to do the Chester Marathon 9th October - am back up to 18 miles now but unfortunately I didn't plan things very well and the bulk of the training load has fallen over the school holidays - not easy to manage with three dcs in tow. So while I've done all the miles I've had to do it in a very disorganised and haphazard way. The boys are now back at school at last and I've just got time to squeeze in a 20 mile run before time for tapering. I'm also one of those people that likes cool weather, so rain/wind is fine, just no sun please!

I'm on facebook too so have tried to keep up with you there. All the best and will drop in when I get a chance!

Paws
x

YeahThatsTheBadger · 12/09/2011 11:50

It is but he is such a lovely bloke that I can't really begrudge him as he puts in the time and effort and, erm...i can't so i'm never going to be that good! Although I am going to put some blame on the treadmill (not me, never me!) as pre-treadmill I got my 5k time down to sub 28mins consistently. Now it's 30 plus. Really need to give myself a good kick up the arse. Rhet I think you have been promoted from Plodderdom after your streak improved your times.

bonkers20 · 12/09/2011 14:23

paws Grin at "squeeze in a 20 mile run". You realise that's quite an exclusive comment to be able to make!

Wheelybug · 12/09/2011 14:40

Great races and reports Cest, N4NNY, Moshi, Debi and Orange.

I too am excited about the GNR, even though I'm not doing it. Or maybe because I'm not doing it Grin. One of my BF is doing it for the 3rd time although hasn't trained much this time. Looking forward to hearing all about it.

I ran outside yesterday for 5K and did it in 25 mins so didn't take it very easy for my ankle. It was ok whilst running, a bit twingey although not at my ankle but somewhere else on my foot which has swollen up... I assume related. Today its a little bit uncomfortable but not as badas I thought it might be. So, this week's goal is run 5 miles by the end of the week. The money goes out for our hotel today so there's no going back..... I was supposed to be doing a 5 mile race this weekend but decided not to.

Wheelybug · 12/09/2011 14:43

Peach - yes dd2 starts pre-school on wednesday. She is very excited which I hope continues. Her only concern is whether puppy (stinky soft toy thing) can go with her.

Hi Paws - nice to see you, good luck with Chester.

June2009 · 12/09/2011 14:52

heya, been catching up with the thread quickly, swiftly forgot who did what :S
orange really sorry about your situation, sounds awful, as someone else said, work stuff wouldn't probably not get to you as much if family sit. was better. hope dh can ease the pain with his massages, good luck with ttc :D
sfx and fanny wanted to say something about something you posted then forgot what it was you posted about.
rhet thanks for that calculator, makes sub 2:30 HM look do-able.
Couldn't go on my long run yesterday because I have a cold, I probably would have gone if the race was not in 2 weeks but I really don't want to make it worse. (can feel ears getting blocked and the threat of a sore throat).
we're out of chicken pox hell and dd is back to nursery (mornings only) so I have had time to catch up with post-holiday work "manic-ness" iyswim.
rhet also I hadn't realised the repercussions like what would happen if anything happened to your dp, that really sucks. You can probably move to somewhere in the UK that is actually further to dd's dad's family than where you are now.
dh had a car accident a couple of weeks ago (luckily he was fine, no one else involved and the car is miraculously fine also.) and it really brought home that we have nothing in place in terms of insurance or anything in case anything happens to either of us. (still done naught about it though.)
moshi how frustrating for you, I think your next race is same day as mine (25th?). Can't wait to hear how this one goes :D

Well done to the weekend racers last weekend, good times :D
I'd better wake dd up, don't want too long a nap or she won't be co-operating when it's bedtime tonight.

sfxmum · 12/09/2011 17:06

hello all

Orange N4NNY, Moshi (was it the race strategy/pacing that you were unhappy with?) Cest and Debi well done all lovely to hear all the experiences

June darn! I am curious nowGrin

well the old woman who could not ride a bike properly is now improving (preen) I feel inspired to push in other ways too, as generally other things seem to be coming together nicely I am feeling optimistic.

however dd is having a bumpy start to the school year, we have had tears at pick time (not unusual, particularly when coupled with tiredness) but also tears at drop off todayShock this never happens, I know she has always been the type to want to be left alone rather than join groups but feels different now, she does not understand girly cliques and gets really hurt. hopefully it will all settle soon.

rhetorician · 12/09/2011 17:19

june2009 make wills, both of you...my father died intestate and it was a total pain - took ages. Luckily my mother was the independent sort who always had her own bank account (quite unusual in those days!)

major effort to cycle through the gales to work; DP says there's a tree down on our road Shock

OP posts:
sfxmum · 12/09/2011 17:42

definitely make will and make sure you have arrangements in place for the children, we have 2 people set as trustees and guardians for her, obviously hoping it never is needed but when my mother died it was such a nightmare
