Very sad news about dd's grandad rhet, I think a visit is deffo in order. Wishing him the best.

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 14/09/2011 07:51

Snurk - Fanny those boots are vile! I am impressed you were able to go out in public with her without walking off muttering.

Peach although restarting after a long break (2yrs) was like starting from scratch for me I quickly got much faster and have beaten all my PBs within a year. I seem to have more stamina despite doing very little overt cardio exercise other than buggy pushing. I recommend to couch to 5K podcasts for getting back into it.

Bonkers - yes, grown-ups don't get sympathy for grazed knees, only exciting macho sporting injuries. Make sure everybody knows it was sustained while whooping a 23yr old's arse.

Rhet sorry to hear about your daughter's grandfather - will he be grandfather to the new baby as well?

ibbydibby · 14/09/2011 09:37

Haven't posted since Friday, soooo much to catch up on.

Bonkers, ouch! Hope you are ok this morning. Were you on your own? I had a mighty tumble earlier this year while out with running club, was mega embarassing to walk back to cars with grazed face, knee and knuckles.....Are you up to date with tetanus injections?

Rhet sorry about DD's grandfather. Hope DD calms down very soon...DS1 had worst ever tantrum when I was pregnant with DS2. Long story, but involved kind lady in Sainsbury's bringing him a cup of water, and DS1 throwing the cup (full) at her.....Fortunately (for me) he was with DH at the time.....I was having a rest at home

FAnny, great time. Hope you have managed to get some accommodation sorted for the weekend.

Well done N4NNY (sorry to read about the fatality), Cest and Orange. Moshi, sympathies re not getting sub 20. Badger am v envious of your friends times.

Had a busy weekend running wise with parkrun on Saturday (another non-PB - am in a "getting slower" phase at present, wanting to be (aren't we all) in a getting faster phase. DS2 did well though, and knocked 77 seconds off his PB, so he is pleased, and a bit closer to beating mum....It is a bit galling to think that Saturday's parkrun winner ran it 9 minutes faster than me.....that's a long time for a 5k distance. Sunday did 10 miles with friends, a bit stop/start so not exactly continuous. Monday was club night when we did hill sessions - fortunately the wind was behind us for the uphill, and against us for the downhill. The other way round would have been a struggle.

Needed a rest on Tuesday, met up with a friend for lunch - I had lasagne and chips which just about finsished me off for the rest of the day. I managed a bowl of cereal at about 9pm and that was all (tastebuds tingling at that time after watching the Great British Bake Off....pies looked delicious (mostly)

Now all dressed up in kit and raring to go for a run, just waiting for car to be collected for service.....

ibbydibby · 14/09/2011 09:41

Fanny having only boys, I don't get to see that many pink things...so was greatly excited to click on your link, only to get the message that page did not exist...have millions of mners fallen for those boots, and they are no longer available?

rhetorician · 14/09/2011 09:43

yes, grand-dad to both children; and his other son is expecting a baby about 3 weeks after us

DD in much better mood today - she has a molar coming

have decided that it is too logistically complicated to run today - 9am drop off, 11am class, 2pm meeting, 3pm lecture, pick up 5pm - the cycle to work takes about 30 mins with approx 5 mins locking-up/disrobing time - but I'd have to take my stuff, and shower and all the rest. But then there's the streak. Equally, have a bit of a pull in my calf, so maybe 20ks of cycling will do instead.

sorry, thinking aloud

Just wanted to share, I went for a great run today ? round the Imperial palace in Tokyo ? you have this moat and the woodlands of the old palace on one side, and modern Tokyo on the other. It?s a really popular route, as the circuit is meant to be exactly 5km (my Garmin said 5.06 Smile ) and there?s loads of people running round ? all in the same direction, I got the sense that to run the other way would be a great faux pas. I meant to do 2 laps but the humidity got to me (according to the scales I sweated nearly half a kilo in just the one lap!) so I just went round once at a shockingly slow 29minutes ? it felt like running in soup by the end, and that was at 7am... Maybe tomorrow I will have acclimitised enough to go round twice...

SonicMiddleAge · 14/09/2011 10:00

Sorry - very egotistical post, not replying to anyone leses posts but travelling at the moment and a bit squeezed for time - will be more friednly later I promise!

orangehead · 14/09/2011 10:04

Oh rhet what a day. Im really sorry about dd granddad. Regarding dd I remember those times well with ds2, ds1 was never a problem but ds2 oh my word didnt know what hit me. I remember feeling he was going to be like this forever but things do get better. However I think I will be joining you next week, I have my brothers son, age 4 staying with us from sunday for two weeks, he is lovely but a bit of a nightmare. With my brother being so ill and his wife obvously stressed dn tends to get away with alot. Which I dont blame them, I cant imagine trying to keep things normal for dc when going through that. But means it will be a fun couple of weeks, and not sure will get much running done.
Hope your knee ok bonkers
Don't quite think I am up to my run today, did'nt sleep much last night with cold. The muscles in my legs and bum feel like I have done a thousand lunges Shock and I feel crap. So lazy day as work tomorrow and want to feel better for that.

ibbydibby · 14/09/2011 10:06

Wow, Tokyo, Sonic am v impressed! Am just about to pound a few quiet (hopefully) Norfolk lanes, but despite the beautiful sunshine there is a strong chilly wind...so doing my usual putting-off-going-out thing.

rhetorician · 14/09/2011 10:09

SMA wow, Tokyo. I've always wanted to go to Japan, not so much Tokyo, but the more rural parts. Have you read that David Mitchell book?

orange - it's a fairly normal day, actually - the only stress factor is whether I can get out at 4, cycle home (like bat out of hell), switch bikes and still manage to collect dd by 5...next week there'll be another class in there at 1.

dr no the last fag I had was at a wedding (go figure!) last year - DP can't do this, as she thinks that she would be instantly addicted all over again. Did you take up running to replace smoking? I didn't, but I know lots of people who did.

Beautiful day. Time to cycle through it!

OP posts:
SonicMiddleAge · 14/09/2011 10:17

Rhet - have read all of David Mitchell;s books - apart from the one that was set in England I loved them all - he's a great writer. Enjoy your cycle!

peachsmuggler · 14/09/2011 11:49

Much respect Sonic, we went to Tokyo 4 years ago, about this time of year, when I was pregnant with DD1. Was about 35-40 degrees and remember walking at the Imperial Palace and seeing all the runners. It was boiling and there was no shade!!!

stickylittlefingers · 14/09/2011 12:39

busy busy thread! I just made a batch of chewy chocolate cookies - do all sit down and have one...

sonic that sounds amazing. I love the descriptions of the runs you lot are doing in far flung places!

rhet that's bad news, I hope they've caught the cancer early. You have a full plate just at the moment - I hope the running is keeping you sane. BTW, re your posts a while back - I am reasonably well connected with lawyers in Ireland still: a constitutional/human rights specialist (academic) and an employment specialist (at the firm where I trained in Dublin) might be helpful, unless you feel that the ground has been covered already. Jeez, whatever happened to the right to Family Life...

Fanny - a pint of guinness and a good strong coffee and I'm anybody's girl normally sorts me out, pedigree chum style. But there are LOADS of portaloos. I normally go at least 3 times beforehand! Well done on your brilliant time too (just do that 4 times and you're sorted!). Are yours HSM fans too then? (I am not that kind of girl - but now I have my favourite bit of HSM3 Blush. Pink sparkly boots here I come )

June2009 · 14/09/2011 15:33

bonkers how is your knee?, what a bummer! Is it all blue and swollen today?

The girl who got me into signing for next week's HM in the first place has JUST told me she's not doing it anymore. It's not like we were planning on running it together but I was somewhat comforted in the knowledge that someone I knew was doing it as well. Not anymore, boo.
I'm going to have a hard time fitting in other runs this week with this cold and trying not to make it worse, I think I've started the tapering early...

peaches I think when you start again it feels horrid but when you have trained before within 2 weeks you make very obvious and motivating progress (been there done that).

drNO and rhet also ex-smoker here, stopped in 2000 and missed it for years when something really stressful happened for example but not anymore.

sonic what are you doing in tokyo? I find it very hard to run when the weather is humid, can't beathe properly (or maybe it was the pollen?)

right I can hear dd singing, it must mean that she is up from her nap...!

thecoo · 14/09/2011 16:09

Ooh just come by for first time in ages and there are so many new people! How on earth do all of you find the time to keep up with this thread? I haven't had a chance to read through yet, but just wanted to say hi and check you were all still around.

My running is going ok, though no races booked so am just enjoying doing it as and when it fits in, which is much easier now that school hols are over.

It's my birthday next week, so still hoping I may get some Amazon vouchers to put towards that Garmin I've been hankering after for so long...

orangehead · 14/09/2011 16:45

Rhet was referring I think to yesterday. Forget sometimes when catching up that some of the messages Im reading today are from day before. Glad today is better and dd better today.
Thanks for cookies sticky Grin
Hello coo

Wheelybug · 14/09/2011 18:20

Hi All

Thought I'd pop in and catch up properly. Have been spending ages on the computer doing a photo book thing for DH's birthday and so have been reading posts.

orange - sorry to hear about all your issues. I hope the two weeks with your nephew goes better than expected - am so sorry to hear about your brother.

rhet - sorry too to hear about your dd's grandfather and it hadn't occurred to me the problems re adoption in Ireland. How frustrating for you. Of course, your dds will grow up knowing you're one of her Mums but it can't be without worry over the legal stuff.

peach - good luck to you and your dd for tomorrow ! Things went fine today - although not without issue. DD2 wasn't keen for me to leave but I knew once I'd got out of the room she'd have a whale of time and she did. She's back in tomorrow so fingers crossed she's still happy to go then. I took a year's break from running when I had dd2 (and I was onlyup to about 10K when I stopped). From when I found out I was pg to when dd was about 4 months old. It was fine - I went back to C25K but skipped the first few weeks.

Sounds like some determined running this week in all the storms (and humidity sonic). Well done everyone !! Futurity your cambridge run sounds idyllic - lovely surroundings help a lot.

June - hope the illness shifts soon. I am definitely not doing the race this weekend. I think I'll just push it too much and go backwards which I certainly don't have time for.

Hope those preparing for the weekend are feeling ok SLF and Fanny!!

Hello TheCoo - nice to see you !

I did another 5K last night and although I had yet another different niggle in my foot it wasn't anything too bad and is ok today. So, will do maybe 4 miles tomorrow in the gym I think and hope for 5-6 miles by the end of the week.

I had my first swimming lesson too today. It confirmed what I thought - a strong swimmer that needs a lot of work on technique. Spent the time kicking up and down with a float. I had never thought the legs mattered that much as long as you were kicking - how wrong I was. And that's before we get started on breathing......... I enjoyed it though and think I might invest in a swim hat and new goggles. I love a retail opportunity Grin.

DrNortherner · 14/09/2011 19:37

sticky can I pop round for that cookie? Put the kettle on...Grin

MoshiMoshi · 14/09/2011 20:14

Am here but overwhelmed by school related things so apologies for not mentioning everyone but I am impressed by lots of the running, saddened by the sad news and commiserating with the tricky news. 3h15m run today covering 23.57M. I put a lid on it this time.

missmuddle · 14/09/2011 20:21

hello runners have been lurking for a while and now need some expert help.
I am doing the gnr on sunday. On Tuesday - last but one run I have pulled a muscle in my lower leg - its a little bit swollen, uncomfortable but not painful - do you think it will be ok by Sunday please say yes because i was in tears last night as i have been training since January

fannybanjo · 14/09/2011 20:42

LittleChief yes they are horrendous but I don't really care what people think, if my daughter wants to enjoy her birthday and wear shoes of her own choice for a day then so be it. They have been retired to the dress up box today. She is so sweet and lovely that she managed to make them look quite classy! However DH was mortified, he said she looked like My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding wannabe...

Ibby Thanks and yes managed to sort out hotel in Durham. It will make the morning easier. Ibby the second post had the link on, first one was wrong. They are monstrous and any feminist would shoot me for even buying them but I'm all for them expressing themselves... Grin

sticky How is your tapering going? Let me know what zone you are in. I'm Zone F - probably with the walkers! Guinness? Nah, will make do with a McDonald's breakfast and hope the turtle returns. DD1 loved HSM however DD2 just liked the pink boots - wasn't arsed one iota what film they were referencing!

Sonic very jealous - Tokyo one of the only few places in the world I truly wish to visit. However my friend cabin crew and she has just come back and said how hot it was so doing a 5k under 30 mins in those conditions! Respect!

Peach hope you are feeling ok. Good luck tomorrow. I have had awful time getting DD2 and DD3 back into pre-school, was very stressed this morning as both were sobbing.

Wheely glad DD was fine. They tend to surprise us! Also glad leg getting stronger. My wrist still playing up but nowhere near as bad. However don't need my wrist to run so can imagine your frustration.

Rhet David Mitchell was born near me, I have his semi-biographical book next to my bed (can't think of title Blush) - I intend to read it when i have finished "One Day" Hope DP okay...? You getting frustrated at lack of runs?

Moshi it seems not quite right you not being on here frequently... It makes us all seem faster runners! Then you frigging well spring a training run of 23.6 miles in 3.15 and fuck that up! Sod your lid, slow down woman, you make us look shit! Wink

missmuddle bloody hell - poor you. Rest rest rest rest rest rest rest and hope for the best. Have you seen a physio? Unfortunately if it is no better then you'll have to defer - don't run 13.1 miles with pulled muscle, you will cause untold damage and pain. Not worth it. Fingers crossed for you.

Right. Running - did 5.6 miles easy today 9 m/m up awful hill which kills me. Intend to do more hill training when GNR over. Rest tomorrow, very easy run Friday then nothing Saturday. Getting nervous and excited!

MoshiMoshi · 14/09/2011 20:42

missmuddle - it is difficult to say without knowing the extent of your tear but it sounds like you need to see a decent (ie running friendly) physio to assess the damage and discuss the likelihood of you running on Sunday. Do not see a GP who will almost certainly tell you to rest it. On the one hand, you could do yourself some serious damage running 13.1 miles on a pulled muscle but, on the other hand, you could have very lightly tugged at it and it just needs some gentle stretching, compression, rest and icing between now and the race (which you would have to complete at a more sedate pace than you might have hoped for). These descriptions are all very subjective and it is best to get a professional to assess, which may cost money, but if you have been training since January and want to be able to run on Sunday, is probably worth the outlay. Good luck!

fannybanjo · 14/09/2011 20:46

Oh yes and deliberating whether to enter Bupa Birmingham Half on 23 October. Will wait and see how GNR treats me first. Anyone else doing it?

missmuddle · 14/09/2011 21:05

thank you for your advice i have not seen a physio but am resting as much as i can and keeping my fingers crossed. and hopefully will be running slower than usual on sunday

rhetorician · 14/09/2011 21:24

fanny managing to get runs in mostly - not today, just too busy, but will be going to gym tomorrow - did 14 miles on bike though...whatever I do I don't seem to be able to keep my biking speed above 20kph - this is partly because of all the junctions and stop signs, but still...I never get a chance to really build up any speed - 30 mins continuous effort would be much better for my aerobic fitness

going to town tomorrow to buy a running backpack so I can run home from work periodically

GNR very close now...I think we might have to christen a new thread with all your race reports :)
