Well dine Debi!!! Good for you, and your DS!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 20/08/2011 13:17

Hi all. Just popping in to mark my place on the new thread (thanks Rhet).

Not much mileage for me this week as my gait experiment continues. I did 3.5 miles on Monday, 2.4 miles Thursday and will probably do another short run today. I am finding it very difficult to go back to my old heel-striking as it feels so heavy-footed. I passed a couple walking their dog on Thursday and overheard the man say "That gave me a fright, I didn't hear her coming" Grin

I am having to hold myself back from doing more mileage. I am certain it would result in shin splints as my shins are slightly sore at the moment (I am icing them after running).

I am quite glad I have been away from the thread a bit as I suspect I would be planning a Garmin purchase - I am easily swayed!

rhetorician · 20/08/2011 13:31

did 10 miler in 1:39 - I was aiming for about 1:45 so thrilled with that; it was hot out there today though, particularly in the first half. We set off about 20 minutes after the elites, who lapped us at about 3 miles Blush. But a good day - full report when I have stuffed my face re-fuelled.

Thanks for all your good wishes and support over the last few months, it really helps!

Good running Rhet! Grin

I did 5.4 miles this morning and really enjoyed it. Am slowly but surely getting back into this!

DrNortherner · 20/08/2011 16:52

Rhet thats a fab time! Totally on track for a sub 2 half by my calculations! You are on fire at the moment.

Debi well done on getting 2nd in your age group, that's such an achievement. Find out who was first and trip her up next time Wink I must look into this Park Run malarkey and see where my nearest one is.

chewy I have a sore shin at the moment, right leg. Did 6.5 niles this morning and iced it when I got back, and turned the shower cold on it. Classic shin splint symptoms, pain when I walk, eases off when running....

Used my £50 voucher towards a new pair of running shoes, and for the first time I have tried Brooks. They feel great, so I'll keep you all posted as to how we get on. TRied Mizunos but found them a bit too wide. £90 though, sheesh. Not cheap are they?!

backward glad you are enjoying getting back to it.

I ran by the river with the dog today and collected another labrador Grin We ran past them, he took a shine to my dog and followed us, I had no idea until about a mile later when he was trying to hump my dog! So I had to run back and reunite him with his owner who was an old guy and very worried.

It's my turn next for this running with other people whilst being timed malarkey!

DrNortherner · 20/08/2011 16:53

Meant to add turn 35 on Thursday so I move up to the female +35 category when racing, just in time for my 10k, that can only be a good thing no? Then not compared to all those 19 year old whippersnappers.....

stickylittlefingers · 20/08/2011 16:56

that's brilliant rhet - you broke the 100 minutes which must be a real psychological boost. Definitely the jammy dodgers wot did it Wink

thechewytoffeemum it is definitely very hard to not have sneaky peeks at garmins when you follow this thread. I have a weird longing to hear a beep every mile now Blush. But I don't want it and can't afford it...

Yay backwardpossom, that's lovely to hear!

I'm still coughing, but so want to do the 10 miles I had planned tomorrow. If I did it really really slowly? We went for a 5 mile walk yesterday (which was lovely, round a local NT estate. DD1 and I did a fun run there last year, so there was much reminiscing!) and there were no ill effects. Hmmm

stickylittlefingers · 20/08/2011 17:01

Meant to say debi that's very impressive!

And DrNo - there is a silver lining to getting older! I met a lovely 67 year old on the Richmond 10k a couple of years ago, she was telling me how great it is to have a very small field to run in! So even if there's no old age pension by the time we get there, at least we can look forward to impressing our elderly friends with our placings :)

futurity · 20/08/2011 17:21

Great times today Rhet and Debi Smile . you are going to smash 2 hours 15 Rhet or did I see that your goal is now 2 hours?

Anifrangapani · 20/08/2011 17:22

Can I join too.

Started running again (after not running for 2 and a bit years) to improve my aerobic fitness and cross train to avoid injury so I can do Sleepless in the Saddle.

I mainly run on the fells because I don't like the jarring on my joints. I think my first race is going to be the Lantern Pike Fell Race on 17th September. My target is not to be last.

2 small bits of advice needed

I work in MK during the week - does anyone know any places around there where I can do off road running?

How can I improve my flat running speed? I am OK going up or down, but on the flat I feel really heavy footed and slow.

rhetorician · 20/08/2011 17:29

futurity, no still aiming for 2h15 for half, the sub 2 hour goal is a way down the road I think...next year. I am thrilled with the time, as it's actually slightly faster per mile than the half I did in 2008...cooking DD's dinner, but back later with more gory details...he, he, he

TheChewyToffeeMum · 20/08/2011 20:08

Sorry the hear about your shin pain DrNo. I hope it doesn't hamper your performance in your running with other people....etc.

What is Sleepless in the Saddle Anifrangapani? I wish I knew the answer to your ? about getting faster on the flat - I also find it much easier to go fast on hilly courses. I suspect it just needs to be the dreaded speed intervals on the flat.

I want new shoes - I have promised myself new ones when I reach 629 miles on my Nike+ (this will be exactly 300miles since I replaced my last pair) Currently about 590. Has anyone tried on Brooks Green Silence? I picked up a pair in the running shop and they feels like nothing compared with my oversupportive Nike Equalons.

orangehead · 20/08/2011 20:14

Thats a brilliant time rhet Smile, and Debi also brilliant time. I am desperately trying to do parkrun under 30 mins my pb is 30.25. Any tips for forshaving off 30 seconds, just cant seem to do it. Well done to your son too.
Sticking I cant afford one either Envy, not fair Smile.
Welcome Anifrangapani
Well I didnt run today but walked 22 miles, I can hardly walk now legs very stiff. I was quite pleased as near the end of the walk my legs felt very sore and stiff and I had the urge to run, so actually ran a bit at the end which actually felt easier than the walking and didnt hurt as much as walking. Felt pleased I was able to run a bit despite being so tired

orangehead · 20/08/2011 20:18

oh and I have decided if I am not up the duff this month I am going to entry a local 10k that is in 2 weeks. Not sure what to do about toilet situation, but what the hell I am just going to go for it

Quenelle · 20/08/2011 20:26

Well done Debi and Rhet.

Hi Anafrangipani do you know Willen Lake?

I got a PB at Parkrun today. Ok, so it was only my 2nd time. I did 30.21, shaving 8 whole seconds off. I thought I had pushed much harder though, which shows it's not going to be easy to improve every time. Was pleased to come 72 out of 102. Third in my category.

rhetorician · 20/08/2011 20:30

hello and welcome anifrangipani; orangehead 22 miles! that's a very long walk indeed! I sometimes find walking harder on the lower legs than running, probably because I run more than I walk these days. Should walk more - when I did, it had a good impact on my running.

So, lovely sunny morning, woke up, feeling a bit weary and not at all like running 10 miles. Had 2 slices of toast (helpfully spread with jam by DD), some tea and about a pint of water. Met some work colleagues at the start, and it seemed like there were fewer runners than for the 5 mile, despite my 9000+ race number. We were over 20 minutes waiting to set off, which probably undid the warming up effects of my bike ride to the park.

First 2 miles were not comfortable, calves very tight, and splits quite slow. Cheered up once we turned the first bend of the first circuit (it helps that there's a nice downhill at 4 miles or so), and then up for the next 2 miles; I'm clocking close to target times at this point. The 20 minute delay, plus the speed these guys do meant that we were passed by the 45+ minute folks at about mile 3. We cheered them on. It was fun down at the back - lots of chat and jokes and camaraderie; all shapes and sizes, all running for the joy of it. Stewards were great too, very encouraging. It seemed to take ages to get to 5 miles, and not long after that (on a long straight road, with lots of finishers jogging home Envy) I passed my parked bike (makes mental note not to park anywhere en route next time) and was tempted just to jack it in and go home. But I slogged on and picked up the pace for the last 4 miles or so; my path was crossed by a tiny blue butterfly, which seemed like a good omen. I was running pretty easy by this point, and my splits got better as the race went on. And then before I knew it, the 9 mile turn up the hill and finish in sight. Nice bit of an old sprint for the line.

It was fun; I didn't quite feel like I had it in the tank today, but also think that most of my problems with running are mental rather than physical - I think I am better than I allow myself to be, IYSWIM, I just always think I can't do it. I really need to tackle this.

There were some great moments in the race though, I loved the Kenyan girl and Zimbabwean guy joking and ribbing each other (he said that her oxygen take-up had been mucked up by living in Ireland for too long) - and the ladies walk/running for their friend's little boy who needs expensive medical treatment.

All in all a good day (DD is getting quite used to rifling through the goody bags for nice sweets); I've had my favourite dinner and am drinking a bottle of my favourite beer.

I still want to improve, and think that I am actually going to join a running club. Watch this space.

In other news: DP and I went for a wholly unnecessary scan yesterday (it should have been cancelled because they could see everything they needed at the 20 week one), but it was lovely to see DD2 in such a relaxed context. She is bigger than DD1 I think, and is no longer breech. Hooray!

I hope you are all having good Saturdays.

Dr No - you will storm your new category; I've 10 years on you, so there!

Sounds like a good race rhet. Glad scan ok and she no longer breech

backwardpossom · 20/08/2011 21:30

Well done Quenelle!

Sounds fab rhet :)

orangehead · 20/08/2011 21:32

Well done Quenelle

peachsmuggler · 20/08/2011 21:33

Yayy Rhet, well done. Great time and loved the race report, especially the blue butterfly! Sounds like you ran a really solid race. Glad all good at scan. We get a 32 weeks scan at our hospital so also hoping it is a more relaxed enjoyable one, as compared to terrifying 12 and 20 weeks ones!

Good work on your run possum!

Loving the positive spin on getting on a bit DrNO!!! ha ha Wink

Sticky, can you plan a route that you can cut short if you feel it is too much?

Welcome Anifrangapani - Don't know MK at all I'm afraid. I would say with running on the flat then maybe do more of it. Sometimes in running it is easy to get stuck doing the stuff we are good at or we comfortable with. We need to do more of the stuff we dont find so easy. Maybe do some interval training, on the flat?

orange, are you doing any speed training? I think he 5k is really difficult to make improvements on as there is less to play with, ifywim. Shaving 30 secs off a 5k is quite a big deal, but am sure you can do it. Think of it as 6 secs per k and in training try to shave this off each k, perhaps by doing a tempo run where you run 5k but run the middle 3k at this pace (tricky without Garmin I know, but i just map my run online and use a digital watch) and then build up to doing all 5 at this pace. Well done on your 22 mile walk, am very impressed! Good luck with the 10k too! And the toilet situ. I sympathise!

Hurrah Quenelle, 8 secs is 8secs and a PB is a PB. Smile

orangehead · 20/08/2011 21:41

Thanks peachs I do do some interval running, once a week but find it really hard. But will persevere. My first parkrun was 34 and half mins so pleased I have knocked off 4 mins. Its very hilly the parkrun I do, not sure what others are like. Might try a bit more hill training.

DebiTheScot · 20/08/2011 22:09

I second the speed training. I haven't done much but noticed the difference when I did.

Well done quenelle and rhet. Great runs Smile

I didn't get a pb after all. The times were wrong (someone walked off with one of the timing token things and everyone's place was shifted up 1!) and I actually got 26:36. Still happy with that though and in some ways I didn't want a new pb today as it'd be harder to improve more next time!
