Hi all. Love the thread title rhet, just watch those Garmin goodies come flooding in now.

I just posted on the old thread by accident because it was in Threads I'm On. Wasn't very interesting; just to orangehead and said I can't map my runs online because I live in a new development which isn't on any online mapping yet. I am looking forward to uploading a run from my Garmin to see what it looks like. Perhaps I would cause Google Maps to implode...?!

Will be going out today from the office to do, hopefully, 3.5 miles but not feeling too enthusiastic at the moment. DS was sick in his cot last night and had to spend the night in our bed, so DH and I are both pretty knackered today. I remembered you all saying that running helps you cope with the tiredness so I'm definitely going to go.

I don't listen to anything when running, I find it disorientating and worry that I won't hear traffic or bad men approaching (DH has made me nervous with his extreme risk-averseness). I like the sound of a comedy podcast though, that would definitely help pass the time on a long run.

PeachSmuggler are you still managing to do any running? I'm TTC #2 atm and if I'm lucky enough to get pregnant I'd like to carry on running this time. Just wonder how realistic that is.

I am in complete awe of FannyBanjo's 9.3min recovery runs and rhet's running streak.

peachsmuggler · 18/08/2011 10:36

Hi quenelle, no, no more running here I'm afraid. I stopped about 16 weeks as was just getting too wiped out by it, especially the next day. Did short bursts of running at exercise class (powerpramming) until 2 weeks ago but I think I am done. Feel physically able while running, as in it is not uncomfortable, but too exhausting. Feeling very envious with all thus talk of Autumn running (my best running season too!). Hope to start back in new year assuming baby, DP, and pelvic floor all co-operate!!!

Realistically will only get out at weekends to start, if baby is permanently attached to me in evenings, like DD1 was but thinking I will make effort to run with pram during day while DD1 at pre-school. Have got a Jane Slalom or whatever it's called nowadays which is quite good for running, though will look into second hand proper jogging pram.

stickylittlefingers · 18/08/2011 11:03

I shouldn't come on here, I'm so grouchy. The cold has moved back onto my chest... please will someone tell me the magic cure for it. I'm so cross, it's ridiculous!! I went on the exercise bike this morning so that my quads don't wither away altogether. That was nice - shame I can't read at the same time as running!

I was just going to say - I did my first two HMs on two short runs and one long run a week, because work and children did not allow for more. Didn't lead to an impressive turn of speed, but certainly was enough to get me round very comfortably. So three runs a week shouldn't be a problem at all.

I haven't got a Garmin. They look so enormous, doesn't that feel a bit odd when you're running? That's not my reason for not getting one, btw, I just wondered.

fannybanjo · 18/08/2011 11:04

cestlavie I too am passing on buying a Garmin as Runmeter works for me and to be honest it'll only throw me before GNR if I start messing about with gadgets... I like rhet has said before am starting to lose the whole reason of why I'm running, which is to keep fit and sane - I don't think I need more stats to mull over!! As long as I know my rough mileage and pace I'm happy!! I know when I'm pushing myself to fast pace cos I can't breathe and don't need a Garmin to tell me that! Grin. (basically I can't afford one so making excuses...) Wink

quenelle my recovery runs probably could do with being slower - it's just I can't programme myself to do it. However if I was truly putting in the mileage I should be in training I probably would but at the mo I'm only averaging 3-4 runs a week. Holidays aren't best time to prepare for HM!!

I'm desperate to do a 10K over next couple of weeks so I can see what my race pace is - anyone know of any in the North West???

Wiifitmama · 18/08/2011 11:07

I've been nocked off! Does that mean I don't have to run?!

wiifitmum - now, that's a terrible excuse...:o

slf that's not good - maybe some rest is in order? get properly better?

I feel a bit guilty about the Garmin thing now - I think that they are brilliant, but not in any sense necessary, and as fanny and cest say might even be counter-productive for those of us inclined to be competitive and focussed on short-term goals. I suppose like so much about the sport they are elite tools that all of us can now use (like running schedules) and sometimes you just need to focus on the basics - running as fast as you can, as far as you can and as much as you can. That's it really. Measuring everything can take the fun out of it, and can even (for me, anyway) be a disincentive.

So Garmin refuseniks, band together and keep the bleepers at bay!!

Did hill intervals in the gym (this is a new one on me, but that's what happened when I pressed a combination of buttons); rising gradients and speed. Not sure what it does, or if it's any good, but did it for 5 miles, anyway :)

OP posts:
Quenelle · 18/08/2011 11:28

Sounds realistic PeachSmuggler. I don't remember major tiredness last time I was pg but I didn't really do much exercise. Oh, and I meant to post before about the running with a pushchair but got sidetracked. I did try running whilst pushing DS in a normal Jane pushchair when he was about 9mo and it wasn't too difficult. DS used to make me laugh though, clinging on to the handrail for dear life with his hair blowing behind him Grin It was a real workout for the upper body I remember.

fannybanjo I can't seem to make myself run at a different speed either, always around 10min/mile, unless I'm running up or down a hill.

cestlavie · 18/08/2011 11:47

fannybanjo have a look at the Runnersworld website (or latest issue) - there will invariably be at 10K somewhere near you. If you go to website and click on 'Events' and select 10K it'll pull up all the forthcoming races, ranging from the tiny to the huge!

EllieG · 18/08/2011 14:33

Thanks for the reassurance that 3 runs a week will be enough training for the HM - is good to know other's in the same position. Trouble with training schdules is that they don't take account of small children being up in the night and general life-business - it's all very well saying you should do 4/5 times a week but I really don't have the time as work full time too (and then DH somewhat selfishly occasionally wants to see me Grin)

Am just aiming to finish HM, but would like to be under 2.5 hours for preference.

Will check out rummeter too - Garmin bit pricey for the EllieG finances at moment too!

fannybanjo · 18/08/2011 14:49

cestlavie I had a very very quick gander before - thanks for that - I'd complete forgotten about RW. I'm gutted - there's a 10k in Warrington right by my brothers house and online entries closed last night Sad - I could turn up but if there's more than 1200 I wouldn't be able to do it and I can't be bothered getting myself all worked up to "race" Wink then not doing it.... I'll see if there's any way of finding out if I can compete.

Ellie I'm lucky if I get out more than 3 times a week half the time. I am aiming to do it in

Quenelle · 18/08/2011 14:50

Well that was a horrible run [scowl]. I didn't realise it was pouring with rain until I was out on the street in my kit, so no option but to go for it. Then I got lost and ended up running 4.5 miles instead of 3.5. I couldn't slow to a walk because I was desperate for a 'Paula'. Then had to have a cold shower on my return because stupid work shower is broken. And to cap it all I had obviously set my Garmin wrong because it didn't beep once.

Still, on the plus side, I can now run 4.5 miles in 46 minutes Grin

Hi EllieG Garminification is not necessary. I did all my training for a HM with a £5 pedometer and a watch.

encyclogirl · 18/08/2011 15:13

LOL at 'Paula' There's nothing worse than being caught short Quenelle!

Quenelle · 18/08/2011 16:52

And then I only ended up sitting there broken-hearted IYSWIM Grin Stupid conception support vitamins giving me dodgy tummy Angry.

On the duh front, have just realised my HM date was down two weeks later than it actually is... wish that was actually the case!

fannybanjo · 18/08/2011 18:26

Well I am so chuffed to bits..... Just been out for a "tempo" run and did 3 miles in 22m17s!!! (7.29m.m.) PB for me! Must be the Brooks... It was hard and I was concentrating on my breathing all the way around to do it but I was determined. There's a 5k near me next week, may just enter it!

Quenelle I had visions of you sitting on the kerb weeing when I read you needed a "Paula"! Shock Only once have I been caught short and had to nip behind a bush - I had visions of someone I knew seeing me. Sod's Law and all that!

rhetorician · 18/08/2011 18:37

fannybanjo Shock; you are a talented runner, you know that? those kind of speeds on relatively low weekly mileage. Respect!

OP posts:
rhetorician · 18/08/2011 18:38

fanny I think you should join a club - they will help you target your training and then I imagine you'd start seeing some really amazing times. You'll be able to catch Moshi!

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 18/08/2011 18:40

Totally agree with Rhet - I can only dream of running that speed over a distance!

I could do with a wee run tonight, but it's miserable outside grumble

fannybanjo · 18/08/2011 18:49

Rhet and Possum thank you so much for the confidence boost. Blush You know what, I would LOVE to join a running club but I have a DH who is a teeny bit insecure (in a good way) and I know when I've mentioned it he has stated he would hate me going out running with a load of blokes but yes, it would be great. Grin I have looked into my local one but it was mainly men so that's me out! Hmm Rhet I think I manage it because I don't tend to read too much into times and pace, I do what I can when I can and try to make each run a quality run plus after having the 3 girls naturally, I can read my body pretty well. I went out then, headphones on, dance music on, knew the route well, focused and just concentrated on getting home as quick as possible. I was surprised when I looked at the stopwatch.

peachsmuggler · 18/08/2011 18:58

Flipping he'll Fanny, that's a brilliant time. Get thee entered in a 5k race!!! Well done.

peachsmuggler · 18/08/2011 18:59

Or even "hell"

backwardpossom · 18/08/2011 19:02

My running club is probably 90% female...

fannybanjo · 18/08/2011 19:06

Thanks peach Grin

Really possum my local one has list of all members and around 80% men. Great if I was single but not so great with insecure DH!

fannybanjo · 18/08/2011 19:07

That should have read "really Possum? - that's great". Damn iPhone cuts bits out.
