Oh yeah the running... None today - probably do another short slow one tomorrow. Need to make sure I'm better before do anything too taxing!

rhet hope your cold clears up soon. Take it easy Wink

rhetorician · 25/08/2011 12:47

meant to say, esp to the new runners (well, new to the thread runners), that some of us are on Facebook. If you pm me then i can give you my fb name and you'll be able to work the others out from there - more or less.

I know lots of people hate fb (we use it primarily as a way of keeping lines of communication open in an easy way with DD's father and his family)

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 25/08/2011 13:17

rhet I'm the only member of my family not on FB - even my mum and dad are on it. Everyone I know in real life ends up having problems with their other half because of it. However I agree, great way of communicating with family, especially if they don't live close by.

rhetorician · 25/08/2011 13:30

fanny - that's why, despite the scorn and derision of all our friends ('have you morphed into a single person?' etc etc) DP and I use the same fb page. I use it much more than she does. I also teach students and would prefer them not to be able to find me. I no longer have any drunken escapades, so the scope for shame is limited!

OP posts:
encyclogirl · 25/08/2011 13:45

Rhet I pm'd you my FB name. Dh uses mine and all his friends are on my FB, it's time efficient he tells me. He's all about Twitter, which I cannot get AT ALL. Thanks for the lovely supportive comment btw, this thread is working wonders for me.

Fanny we had to stay out in Gateshead, near the Ikea. It was grand, decent brekkie, loads of other runners staying, and v.v. cheap. I'll try to find the name if your stuck for a place.

DebiTheScot · 25/08/2011 14:02

encyclo I think a 10 mile run is more effort than a 30km cycle.
moshi I'm impressed that your 6yr old can run 3 miles.

Was planning a 6 mile or so run today while the boys are at the childminder but I'm very stuffed up with a cold and struggling to find the energy to do the jobs I have to do first. We're going on holiday on Sat so don't want to make it worse either.

fishie · 25/08/2011 14:02

I want a garmin tooo. iphone all very well but under-records. Meanwhile, I have some questions for you...

My knee hurts, which I think means new shoes. But sodding Run and Become is closed for holiday again. Where else can I go in London?

Who runs with a dog? How do you find it? I've been taking mine out for the past few weeks now he is old enough. He is really slowing me down and I'm not fast anyway (10k ph down to 8.5k).

rhetorician · 25/08/2011 14:52

also think 10 mile run is harder than 30km cycle (a bike will almost always be lighter than a human!) - and I do 30km (admittedly in 2 legs) quite often on a bike.

debi ick to cold - I have one too, but it's really minor.

There's Up and Running in London, isn't there. fishie? a few people run with their dogs (Dr No, Moshi) but not all the time, and only for easy runs that aren't too long?? am I right?

neighbour just got a rescue dog (9 months, black retriever cross) - DD is in love...

DrNortherner · 25/08/2011 14:56

fishie I run with my 3 year old lab. I did all my half marathon training with him. I love it! He is much better if we can get out into the sticks and he can eb off lead. He does run on lead but he struggles to keep my pace (which is neither a jog nor a sprint for him) so a bit more awkward. I do wonder if I should invest in a waist leash for him. Plus you do of course hav to stop to throw sticks/pick up poo/put lead on to cross roads etc etc but the company is great!

debi Hope you feel better before your hols - going anywhere nice?

moshi well done to teh moshi juniors for managing 3 miles, that is good going!

encyclo a foam roller is indeed a massger, but for everywhere, not just shins. It supposedly gives the ame effects as a dep tissue massage. Youtube it and you will get the idea.

Another rest day fo me, hoping my leg pain goes by the weekend. Off to teh fair this afternoon, yay!

Piffpaffpoff · 25/08/2011 14:58

Fishie, interested about you saying you think you need new shoes: how often should running shoes be replaced?

I had a bad run today, was aiming to do 6k but got a really tight achillies (I think?) and had to stop and stretch it for five mins and then I just totally list my mojo and headed home so only managed about 3.5k. Oh well, tomorrow is a new day and all that!

fannybanjo · 25/08/2011 15:11

rhet that's a great idea re joint FB - not thought of that.

piff re trainers - I change mine roughly 3 times a year. I think the average wear of a running shoe is around 400-500 miles but I just know when mine have had their day. My toe came through my last pair and I've had them since February. I all depends on your weekly mileage. Mine is average 100 miles a month so I should be changing them every 4-5 months. Smile

fannybanjo · 25/08/2011 15:13

encyclo thanks - appreciate that!

Piffpaffpoff · 25/08/2011 15:33

Thanks Fishie, mine are a year or two old but I doubt they have seen 500 miles yet, my running has been somewhat erm sporadic shall we say although I am determined to get going regularly. Think I will get a new pair anyway, any excuse for a bit of shopping!

Piffpaffpoff · 25/08/2011 15:34

Sorry, that should of course have said thanks Fanny. (Piff adds specs to shopping list...)

Quenelle · 25/08/2011 15:49

Hi all.

Sorry to hear about colds doing the rounds. I hope you're better soon rhet and debi. Glad to hear you are feeling better fanny.

Well done on the 10k orangehead. Your trail race looks like a nice one. Have you identified suitable wee stops?

Went out for the usual lunchtime run. Did two laps of this park I've found, which is far more pleasant than running up and down a maze of residential streets. I've developed a pain in my left shin and it was twingeing quite a lot this morning so will put some frozen peas on it this evening. I really must concentrate on a proper stretching routine, I've been rushing it because I need to get showered and back to my desk.

I'll rest it now until Sunday, it's DH's turn to do parkrun this week. He's very excited bless him. Then next week I think we'll both take our running kit to the New Forest with us. Maybe we'll try a joint jog with DS in his buggy.

fishie · 25/08/2011 16:23

hmm maybe I'm expecting too much of my beastie. He is huge though, retriever / german shepherd / husky cross. His slow trot is just a bit slower than my run, although we were doing better this morning till the knee went twang. I am very fortunate to work with an osteopath so I'll get him to have a look at me later.

I think my shoes have done about 800k and they're fairly minimal so a shorter life than more cushiony ones. Colds are rubbish. Wishing you all a lovely long weekend of uninjured and healthy running.

encyclogirl · 25/08/2011 16:35

Fanny it was the Holiday Inn Express at Newcastle Metrocentre. I just checked on Booking.com and they were sold out. Might be worth ringing the hotel direct though. Other hotels came up on that website, some in the heart of the city too.

The other thing I looked at was booking an apartment in the city centre. Might work better with the dh and dc? That was a very good deal.

stickylittlefingers · 25/08/2011 16:35

Moshi that sounds like fun with the minimoshis (it does sound like they might have inherited their mother's athletic prowess!). DD1 is very keen to do the mini great north run they do the day before the GNR. I'm just slightly alarmed at her running off into a crowd of unknowns... does anyone have views on this? How old can they start doing their "own" runs (she's 7, btw, and pretty sensible).

Fanny do get something booked soon (I'm sure you don't need me to tell you, but I wanted to anyway!!) It's amazing how it books up, though obviously it's wonderful for the NE economy. Even as far away as Ripon, it seems. Though there's always the Sedgefield racecourse option...

I hope all the colds clear up soon. You have my sympathy!

encyclogirl · 25/08/2011 16:40

I am definitely getting a foam roller btw Grin

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 25/08/2011 18:27

Hello, I'll join the cold party ... not really sore throat/snuffles but just general aches and pains and feeling out of it like the start of flu or some other lurgy. Had to take today off work so sat on the sofa necking vit c/zinc/echinacea watching Toy Story 3. I am a bit Blush to admit the ending tipped me over the edge with my general state of malingering - there were tears ...

Plus, having had a go at intervals earlier in the week, I think it's made shin splints flare up - anyone got any suggestions for minimising impact when sprinting?

Quenelle (I think) mentioned doing the herts 10k -we must be in the same neck of the woods, I'm doing it in October this year - how did you find it?

Off to eat pasta now and try and conserve my energy for my day off tomorrow with superactive DP. Hmm, is 18 months too early to get him running and work off his excessive energy??

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 25/08/2011 18:28

Fishie if you are looking for a running shop in London, Runners need is good, it's often attached to a cycle surgery. There is one in Camden and one in Kings Cross that I know of. Oh and another one near Liverpool st

backwardpossom · 25/08/2011 19:30

encyclo just having a giggle at your colleague thinking cycling is as hard mile-per-mile as running... Hmm Is that why in triathlons, the cycling is much further than the running?!

fannybanjo · 25/08/2011 19:49

piff Haha I knew you meant Fishy Fanny really.... Grin You should be good for a few more months but like I said, you tend to know when you need new ones, especially if you are running regularly, they just go baggy and don't feel supportive anymore when they need replacing.

encyclo ahh thank you, what a sweetheart, you really didn't need to check for me but thank you so much for taking the time to do that. I will look into hotels after I have posted this!

Quenelle thanks! I am just about managing to make it through the day in my "chav" trousers though. Don't know HOW I have done it.... Wink Hmm (sorry for everyone else, something mentioned on another thread!) I hate the term CHAV with a vengeance, it is derogatory and mean.

sticky are you in the NE then? You up for the Fanny and Fanbanjos to drop in for a weekend....?!

Can vouch for Runners Need, I got my last pair from them and they did a decent gait analysis however this was in Cheshire not London but good all the same!

Oh yeah and anyone who things cycling is harder than running ain't a runner!!

rhetorician · 25/08/2011 19:56

Oh yeah and anyone who things cycling is harder than running ain't a runner!! OR, they live at the top of a hill and routinely cycle up, but run down...
