Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhh Lost a really long post. Man, that's annoying!

Back later with a re-type.

grrrrrrrr.

MoshiMoshi · 24/08/2011 10:48

20.38M in 2:53:52. Average pace 8:32m/m. 1 gel at mile 10. Water. Funnily enough I feel better not taking on as much as the literature suggests. For VLM I took gels every 6 miles and Lucozade but think it weighed me down a bit as I am used to running on empty each morning. I will have to experiment with what works best for me but I think may 2 possibly 3 gels for the marathon is what might be optimal for me... Happy running all.

DrNo - any pain today in your shin?

Pinkglow · 24/08/2011 11:14

Went for a run last night which felt harder but still finished at the same time as I did last time. Although speed isn't something I'm aiming for at the moment it did make me realise how hard it must be to shave even a minute off someones PB.

Well app said I ran 6.5km and walkjogrun said 6km so I'll just say 6.25k and this is why I want a Garmin. I'm thinking of the 405 one as they are around £100 on Amazon

DrNortherner · 24/08/2011 17:05

encylclogirl if you lose a long post again try pressing the back button and it should bring it back. Normally works for me.

Moshi great time for your LSR. Agree we should all post all our times, not just out race times.

Debi some speedy times from you too there!

Re Garmin, I have the 110 and have never had a problem with it taking an age to find a sattelite......

Re my shin pain Moshi, yes it is still there. (the pain not my shin!) Did 6.5 miles at running club last night and probably shouldn't have done. Not even sure it is my shin tbh. Feels more like a tendon. When I run my fingers accross it the tendon feels enlarged and moves, in my healthy leg it doesn't....Iced it last night, put ibro gel on, stretched and foamed rolled, will do the same today and tomorrow. Have decided to rest for 2 days, then reassess the situation regarding 10k race on BH Monday. Dh said wearing heels to work today was a bad idea but I can not bring myself to go into the office in flats as I am a short arse.

orangehead · 24/08/2011 18:26

Sounds like some good running going on. Did 10k today, excluding toilet stop 1hr 8 mins. I stop at subway for toilet and buy some water, but they had run out of water today, not impressed. Nevermind

fannybanjo · 24/08/2011 18:54

Hi ladies.... Feeling loads better, had rough couple of days at weekend with throat then seem to have shaken it off - I do find that with being fit and healthy when I do catch a virus, it doesn't linger

Some good running going on! This thread is moving so fast, I haven't had chance to read everyone's posts so just say an all round well done everyone for doing more than me!

Welcome back Moshi - hope you have had a lovely break and can't believe you still manage to keep your training up - you are one dedicated lunatic! Wink

Thank you for everyone's advice re over exerting myself. This thread has given me a HUGE kick up the arse over what I should be doing.

DrNortherner Thank you for advice re nuts/seeds etc - I do usually eat really well - could do with more fruit but do find the holidays is when I probably don't drink enough water or eat enough in some respects because I am so busy. I'm trying to make an effort to make a fresh smoothie everyday to get more vits in. So far, only managed to do it once!

Re running - have just gone out for first time in a week - 10m/m 2.7 miles - nice slow short run to get back into it. However I am starting to wish I hadn't pushed myself to do the GNR - I truly didn't think I would get in and DH and my Mum think I should consider deflecting it to next year and getting a few shorter races in first. Anyone else this would be a good idea? I am in danger I think of burning out trying to fit in all training and doing housework/kids/admin for DH etc. I had a trip to Dr yesterday to get checked over - she agreed it probably would be best but I feel like I have failed if I don't go through with it.... I'm not running for a charity so wouldn't let anyone down. Then maybe I could start with a 5k,10k, 10 mile etc. Get a few races in and have more understanding of what my body can do.

stickylittlefingers · 24/08/2011 19:26

Hi Fanny good to see you back!

wrt to GNR (too many abbreviations there!) I would go with your gut instinct. It does seem to be really easy to defer, and they really encourage people to do that, rather than have to pull out midway.

Having said that, even when you first posted on this thread you were more than capable of doing the distance. Presumably the question for you is do you want to do it this year, but maybe slower than you had hoped for (let's face it, your slow times are beyond me, so it's not like you would be embarrassingly slow, but not as fast as you wanted), or would you rather defer, have the guaranteed place next year and a long time to train, do other races etc.

One other thing you might bear in mind if you didn't know already: once you've completed one GNR, you can book a place for the next three years. So if you did it this year, you could do it next year (and the next, and the next!): it's not like you have this one chance to make the best of.

Anyway, you have to make the choice you feel happy with. I can't see how you could have possibly "failed", whichever choice you make, so get those sily negatives thoughts away from your mind! Running is to make you feel better, not be another thing to worry about...

DrNortherner · 24/08/2011 19:27

Fanny it seems such a shame to let the place go when it is so difficult to get one.

If you complete GNR what do you hope to achieve? You may just have to lower your expectations and run/walk. You can finish it. Lots of people do it with zero training.

If not, perhaps someone on here would take your place?

rhetorician · 24/08/2011 19:39

fanny I agree with the others; you are more than capable of doing the GNR distance, but you might have to swallow your pride a bit on the time. You can finish it no problem, and then you can move into your longer term plan. I had very straightforward goals for the year - to complete a given distance (training) to complete a given distance (racing), to not get injured, and to get my weight down to a certain level. I am managing all of these (except the last, not helped by the presence of chocolate pots in the house!). This is my first year of full running since 2008, so I regard it very much as base building.

Next year, I will start to set myself time goals for a smaller number of races - probably 4 (great ireland run, and phoenix park 5m, 10m, and half marathon).

Really, I think you should just do it unless you are actually sick or injured.

had busy day with visitors for lunch (one of them has a 4 month old so a bit of a try out for DD, who passed with flying colours), then to gym for hills - fairly slow as I am still doing running streak + tired + menstrual. But done, all the same

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 24/08/2011 19:59

Thanks rhet dr and sticky - you are all right - I'm more than capable of finishing it and that's not the problem - I'm punishing myself to do it fast and that's what is putting me off, pressuring myself. I'm going to do it and I'm going to enjoy doing it and sod the time/pace. I'll carry on training as I usually do but just slow down my LSR and recovery run and add in a good tempo session and interval one too. My nature is to be competitive but only with myself. Blush. Obviously if I was ill the week before then that's different - I'll just see how I go and not put pressure on myself. Note to self - be sensible!!!

rhet glad your DD was baby friendly..! My DD1 most certainly wasn't so when DD2 came along she was not impressed one iota.

rhetorician · 24/08/2011 20:17

fanny - well it remains to be seen what happens when DD2 is here and here to stay...

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 24/08/2011 20:36

Don't worry Rhet, she'll love her to bits but as you can expect, as in every family, siblings have their moments where it's a definite love hate relationship. Your gap will be great as DD mature enough to understand what's happening but young enough to forget within a few months that she was ever on her own! 5 years between DD1 and DD2 and DD1 still cries now saying she wished her sisters weren't here... Sad Tough titty though!! GrinWink

I am bracing myself - I'm taking DD1 and her best friend to Blackpool Pleasure Beach tomorrow. I'm no fan of thrill rides so reckon I'll be shoving them on the major rides alone! DD1 obsessed with rollercoasters - I however am not but you gotta do what ya gotta do! Hmm

DrNortherner · 24/08/2011 21:55

Well I only have one child so can not offer advice but there is 2 years between nephew and niece and when dn was born, nephew who was 2 kept saying to his mum through gritted teeth "put it down" (it being his baby sister!)

I'm sure it will all be fine. Have you thought about names?

rhetorician · 24/08/2011 22:11

Dr No I haven't a clue either, being an only child of an only child. DP has 5 sibs though, so is aware of the true horror. I think she'll be fine, it's us I'm worried about...

names, hmm, we have a few - it was easy with DD, and involved very little discussion, but this time we don't really have (or haven't found) a real stand-out name

I hope the poorly leg gets better soon - do you think you can make it to the 10k on Monday (I'd say if you rest until then you'd still be fine as your base fitness and speed is very good) and then take a few days off?

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 24/08/2011 22:44

fanny, I think GNR is notoriously slow as is so busy so maybe you'll be forced into taking it easy. Also is supposed to be brilliant fun and friendly so I say for this year just enjoy that aspect of it while running, am sure, a pretty solid race and then you can see about doing it faster next year.

I've got 4 siblings and we all mucked along pretty well, though I am the youngest so don't know what it's like to be usurped by a gouged one. DD is talking very positively about the new baby, all the toys/clothes/prams she is magnanimously going to give her and all the things she will teach her. Not sure how this was all translate once she's actually born but am keeping fingers crossed!

orangehead · 24/08/2011 22:45

Glad your feeling better fanny. Glad your still thinking of doing GNR. Possibly a bit thick here but what it GNR? Obviously some run, great north run??
What age gap will you have rhet? I have 16 monts between mine. DS1 was great, just a bit enthuastic with his hugs nearly taking ds2 head off. It was tough at first (as I didnt plan a small age gap then hubby ran off 3 weeks after ds2 born, but have a lovely hubby now Smile) but now they are like best friends and play so well together.
Got RW think Im a shuffler too.
Well as promised, Im not pregnant this month Sad so just printed off the form and will post it tomorrow for the 10k. Nervous now. At least the old witch waited till half an hour after my 10k run today, as I normally suffer the first 2 days.
I can add myself to the list now [excited]

fanny I say do it but don't push too hard too.

I'm all stuffed up with the cold today- thanks dh for sharing. Hope I can get out for a decent run tomorrow while I have a child free day.

rhetorician · 24/08/2011 22:54

orange, DD1 will be 2.10 or thereabouts. Sorry about hubby #1; glad you have upgraded him!

peach yes, DD is much the same, but it remains to be seen how theory will translate into practice Hmm
debi sorry about grot cold

night all

OP posts:
encyclogirl · 24/08/2011 23:05

Thanks Dr No I'll try that next time. My post is now irrelevant due to the speed this thread moves!

Fanny I did the 09 GNR having not run any further than two miles together. I did it with a friend who was (and is) a cancer survivor. I took us about 2.30 to get round, I nearly carried her over the finish. Fab though, I will definitely apply for 2012. I think you will kick yourself on the day if you don't do it.

I think I'm going to do the Cork Women's Mini, (only a 4 mile race). It's on September 25th. I just fancy sticking on a number and running with other people.

DrNortherner · 24/08/2011 23:24

rhet I have iced and elevated and ibro gelled tonight, plus a foam roll before bed

N4NNY · 25/08/2011 07:42

What is a foam roller and what do I do with it. Feel daft cos I don't know.

Did hill sprints at running club last night they felt good.

encyclogirl · 25/08/2011 10:28

Morning all, I want a foam roller too! I think it's a shin massager?

Got 7 miles planned for tonight, then on Saturday I'm doing my 10 mile. In my stupid innocence I'm actually looking forward to it. No doubt I will be filled with regret half way round!

I have an issue with an uber competitive colleague though. Anything I can do, she can soooo much better. She seems to forget that she's cycling and I'm running! I told her I was planning a 10 mile and she scoffed and informed me that she would be 'doing' a 30k the same day. Ya, on a bike though, says I. "It's just as hard" says she.

Hmm
MoshiMoshi · 25/08/2011 11:48

N4NNY and encyclo - Try the StrideUK foam roller £15 at www.strideuk.com/equipment.php. I have a longer one but think a short one like this is all you need. Actually, I may take the chopping knife to mine...

3M recovery run with dog, DS (8) and DD1 (6). All went fine and they found it quite easy with a few stops to adjust various things for DD1 (hoodie off, hoodie on etc). Plus it rained but they kept their spirits up playing shuttle running games between covered areas. I think they may be decent runners! Grin

rhetorician · 25/08/2011 12:00

encyclo you are the thread poster girl - proof of what you can do if you have some support - great stuff! On upside of my snail paces is that apart from some calf tightness which I usually can stretch out, or run through, I have pretty good conditioning in my legs. But I might need a foam roller next year when I start trying to go a bit faster.

Sigh, this morning was just one of those runs: I slept badly, I ran lateish yesterday (so limited recovery), am on day 17 of streak, have a slight cold, chatted to manager at DD's nursery (back from mat leave, looking forward to her level of organisation returning to the place), and then nothing was right - laces too loose, then too tight, pants riding up bum, shorts all twisty round my legs etc etc etc ad nauseam. But still ran an easy 6 miles - will try and do 7 tomorrow. Then met another friend walking her dog, so an hour long run ended up taking about an hour and a half!

showered and drinking coffee, looking at some work, have to get DD in an hour!! best get off here then

happy running all

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 25/08/2011 12:42

Thanks everyone for encouragement! Think half the problem is I haven't booked a hotel. I was considering booking one about 30 miles away (no chance of getting one near Newcastle this close to race) and DH and the DDs all stay OR hiring our neighbours camper van for the weekend and finding a nice site nearby (sounds better). It's not cut and dry so adding stress.

encyclo I laughed at your tale of your colleague! I worked with someone like that and a friend thinks running on the Wii Fit is the same!! GrinHmm However bit of competitiveness does you good Wink

rhet running is like that isn't it - always surprises you. Glad your happier with DD's nursery manager being back.

Moshi very Envy of you running with the dogs and kids. Well done your two little ones! We have two gun dogs (DH starting to enter competitions) and the dogs worth a few quid so my begging DH if I can take them out with me falls on deaf ears... He's terrified I'd lose one of them. He knows me well....

Just at Blackpool pleasure beach - having a coffee whilst DD and her friend on some crazy ride. Just been on Infusion. That's me done for the day!
