The small boats problem has got worse since Brexit

This comes around many times. First boat arrival in uk was 2014. Boat arrivals increased as security checks on ferries and lorries increased.

As some have said, France will solve their Calais problem overnight if the UK rejoins the EU.

How has it cost us a fortune when they are 15 trillion in debt and our economy is better then any of their member countries - including France, Germany, Italy?

And we have far better trade deals with the US - and virtually the same trade deals with Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India

You’re not honestly suggesting our unstable relationship with the country with 47 trillion debt headed by a megalomaniac is anyway something to be relied upon?

So this is about Trump? You don't think any European leaders are questionable?

They’d never let us back in as before… that ship has sailed - you’d have to say bye to the £££££££

I honestly couldn’t give a shit about the £

and hello to :

The €

Unlimited immigration
Cost to rebuild the Ukraine as EU has suggested they would become a member.

Disaster

All the economies in the EU are worse than ours
They have worse trade deals with the US
They have a shortfall of about £120 billion and want countries to contribute more
Open borders will make the small boats seem like a drop in the ocean

The ship has sailed and we don't want to re-join

I mean, they really, really aren’t .

When people say that EU membership means unlimited immigration I’m unsure why. Our immigration laws will remain ours in the same way Spain’s does. Immigration doesn’t just from EU countries, we have commonwealth immigration among others. Other European countries have similar post colonial immigration. Of course, the privatisation of border control coupled with Brexit has made illegal immigration more of a challenge and this clearly needs some attention. Another factor that could decrease illegal immigration would be clamping down on those who employ illegally. Our problem, as a nation, is that we try and do everything on the cheap and there’s no quality in immigration, border control and asylum processing. There’s a lot of work to be done and we have a lot of people who need to work. The problem is that the wrong people have the wealth and don’t contribute.

How will being in the EU help all of that?

Dublin regulation
shared intelligence
immigration process
asylum processing
international cooperation

But you’re right it’s not just about EU, it’s also about a renewal of our dignity and identity which somehow we lost, not just due to Brexit but in part; austerity measures also paid its part, along with a legacy of deindustrialisation and demonetisation of working class Brits.

"international cooperation" is quite broad, isn't it? Doesn't shared intelligence happen, especially with NATO? The trouble is that it's all a bit difficult to quantify.
I'm also wondering about the expense of another referendum.

Another factor that could decrease illegal immigration would be clamping down on those who employ illegally.

People couldn’t be employed illegally if they did not enter the UK illegally to begin with.

Our problem, as a nation, is that we try and do everything on the cheap and there’s no quality in immigration

That started in 2006 when Tony Blair reduced the caps on numbers that could enter from Eastern Europe.

The problem is that the wrong people have the wealth and don’t contribute.

Who are those people? Why are they the wrong ones? Who would decide who the right people should be?

For information, the top 1% of UK taxpayers pay almost 30% of the total tax. Annoy they too much and they leave. A recent example is Chris Rokus. He was paying £330 million per UK, but has left the UK.

Regards the Dublin Agreement, UK took in more than they ever returned. Also, the numbers were measured in the 100s as opposed to the 100s of thousands. An old and weak argument that has been raised and debunked many times in question time

Using the Dublin Agreement as an EU benefit shows that remainers did not know what they were voting for. It was useless and has been scrapped to be replaced by a new system which has caused division in EU countries. It was not something to hold up as a benefit.

EEexpat · Yesterday 18:21

@TheFatRat

Even Fiona Bruce, host of BBC Question Time, has had to remind both people in the audience and on the panel, that the Dublin Agreement applied to small numbers of people.

That countries like, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, all of whom are in the Dublin Agreement, have higher immigration than the UK, is a giveaway that the Dublin Agreement does not guarantee lower immigration.

Gotta say I do like Brentrance, even though I'd definitely not be voting in favour of it were I asked to.

I’ve heard of parents choosing a name for a child when they are sure one is in the way, but not before.

Labour are flip flopping like they did after the 2017 general election. Changed their minds regards Brexit when they received 40% of the votes and switched to remain.

Their 2019 manifesto was to have a second referendum with the option to remain. The outcome was their worst result in 84 years.

Do all of those who want a return to the EU wish to be closer aligned with right wing politics because that’s what Europe is rapidly becoming. It’s nothing like the Europe we left.

France will have Marine Le Pen as president after next year’s election. AfD are winning regional elections in Germany. Spain, Austria and Poland are all likely to result in right wing governments or right wing led coalitions in 2027. Many others such as Italy, Hungary, Finland and Croatia already have right wing led governments.

The UK under the Labour Party would be somewhat of an outlier.

A good start would be control and regulation of all businesses and self employment to try to get rid of the ever growing black economy with its tax evasion, illegal working, modern slavery and money laundering. In some EU countries, every business had to be licenced. Just look at the state of our High Street, full of dodgy kebab shops, Turkish barbers, bright convenience stores and mobile phone accessory shops that never have customers, hand car washes, etc. So many businesses that open and shut within months to avoid paying taxes or business rates. All the tradesmen doing cash in hand jobs, fake self employment on building sites, food and parcel deliverers, etc.

Only an outlier until the next general election when labour will get thrown out.

I’m very bored with this Old Etonian being dragged out. I pay as much tax as him proportionately and I don’t begrudge a penny. I’d like to pay a little more and see that we have adequate probation services, roads and support for asylum processing.

Theres more to illegal employment than being an illegal immigrant. Lots of people with uk citizenship or right to remain are illegally employed in the money laundering industry, drug dealing, fake self employment, tax evading tradesmen/businesses, illegal money lending, etc.

Yes, illegal immigrants are more likely to work in such places but it’s not a problem limited to those with no right to work.
