Brexit MegaThread - part 14

Thread 13. We had a debate about whether there should be a new one but if no one answers this the whole series after 8 years plus will come to their end.

Brexit happened, although one time Leavers do not seem to appreciate this.
It's worth noting I think that Brexit was a Tory initiative and the Tory party has just received its worse electoral thrashing since 1832. Could it be entirely unrelated?

What next? A gradual rapprochement with the EU? A Norway style agreement?

@IItisymoi

Thank you!
Although in some ways a wish I hadn't asked and just sat in Leave voter ignorance.

Much of lidl 'UK' meat and dairy is produced in NI. It's only 'Great Britain' produced goods liable to be sold in NI that need the label - so they don't get 'accidentally' shipped into Ireland. If you're not selling into NI you don't need the label.

There are LIKELY to be various 'trade wars' occurring in the next few years as global finance and manufacturing etc are shifting

Wow. Another remain forecast for the future. So, which countries will be involved in the trade wars and what will the grievances?

SerendipityJane · 11/08/2024 11:13

Wow. Another remain forecast for the future.

Regardless of whether I voted Remain 8 years ago or not, Trade wars are brewing globally (if you can be bothered to read ANY worthhwhile news papers or their websites, and combined with the ACTUAL wars (Russia Ukraine, Israel Gaza, and the various other less publicised (in the West) conflicts) it is good to see that the UK sits in splendid isolationism certainly in terms of BENEFICIAL trade relationships as nicely presented by Serependityjane you can only winder if Globe is actually just a small minded person who sits at a computer somewhere but who never gets beyond thinking outside their chair.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 12/08/2024 11:11

The diagram presented creates the impression that the UK does not trade with any of the countries listed. This is incorrect.

The UK trades with the EU under the terms of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement for goods, but not services. Service exports have boomed since.

The MRA deal between Switzerland and the UK was signed in 2022.

UK signed new FTA with; Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein in 2021.

Regard Monaco, the trade value is less than Richard Branson‘s net worth. Trade with San Marino is less than what can be won on the national lottery. Same applies to Andorra.

So, it’s the same recurring theme since 2016. When one predicted catastrophe for the UK fails materialise, remain supporters invent another.

Well it's possible that when the new EU travel visa system is live, they can reject UK citizens with a criminal record

Oh, you meant benefits for Britain ? Sorry cheques still in the post. And given the value of the Rouble, I wouldn't be ordering anything too fancy. It'll be like a Lotto lucky dip.

IItisymoi · 12/08/2024 11:43

The diagram shows countries with IMPROVED trade relations above those of 'basic WTO'. Globe is getting damn tedious with all the rubbish whataboutery;
As a Brit I am now having to waste a morning trying to sort out paperwork to send my product to the UK and instead of apologising for the hurdles Globe and the idiots deliberately put in place I am having to lose UK clients. I am way beyond anoyed with the situation.

Brexit is a cult. You might as well try to convince flat earthers the world is a globe.
As an aside, I know a few flat earthers, all enthusiastic brexit supporters.

It is possible to detect and hide such things with AI. Or rather, if you can't then what is the point of it ?

SerendipityJane · 12/08/2024 14:32

How can it have "slipped under the radar" if it was being discussed 3 weeks ago ?

A more honest headline would have been "you thought we did news. Turns out you were wrong."

GlobeTrotter2000 · 12/08/2024 17:02

apologising for the hurdles Globe and the idiots deliberately put in place

I think this has been said before, but for the benefit of those who may not have realised or remembered, the sequence of events was:

2016 - UK voted to leave the EU

2017 - 498 MPs voted to trigger Article 50 in accordance with UK law. At this time Tories had 330 seats and not all of them voted to trigger Article 50. Therefore, 168+ MPs from other parties also supported Brexit.

2018 - The EU confirmed they would accept a unilateral decision by the UK to revoke Article 50

2019
Lib Dems stood on a manifesto to revoke Article 50 if they were elected. Labour stated they would offer another referendum with the option to take the T May deal or remain. T May deal was remain is disguise. So, Labour were offering remain or remain. Hence, it is undeniable that the option to cancel Brexit was presented. Had the 16.1 million who voted remain in 2016 voted Labour or Lib Dems, as opposed to Tories, this thread would not exist.

Remain supporters have attempted to defend this by saying that people vote at GE on multiple issues as opposed to single issues raised in a referendum. However, this thread has lead to contradictory responses as follows:

starting to realise what an absolute sh!t show Brexit is, and gave the Tories a pasting as a result

but later on say;

thick to realise that a General Election isn't a single issue vote, unlike, say, a referendum

Which contradicts the statement that the Tories lost solely due Brexit as suggested by the OP.

HannibalHeyes · 12/08/2024 19:32

"A" definitely not demonstrating any "I" there...

GlobeTrotter2000 · 29/07/2024 11:41

@Peregrina Could it be entirely unrelated?

Definitely unrelated. Tory large loss was attributable to 4 million+ votes for the Reform Party.

Also, Labour applied lessons learnt from the 2019 general election when they received their worst result in 85 years by trying to ignore the 2016 referendum result.

How are the four million votes for Reform not related to Brexit?

DuncinToffee · 14/08/2024 14:52

Should have voted Lib Dem

The grim reality of Brexit.
Families have been advised to travel with supplies of food, water and nappies because they could face 15-hour waits at Dover when the EU entry/exit system comes into force.

Holidaymakers could face 15hr queues at Dover under Brexit border plan

Families will be advised to travel with supplies of water, food and nappies, as UK prepares for the EU's Entry/Exit System

But this is what we voted for, so stop whinging Hmm

And why do you want to go to the continent? Confused Everything you could possibly want is here in the UK. Hmm

Very interesting analysis in the Economist about racism in UK politics
from Mosely to Powell to te National Front to the EDL to Yaxley Lennon
pointing out that the percentage share of vote / opinion poll
remains remarkably static
and can / should be largely ignored.

By the way have you all seen what happened to Liz Truss in Beccles

The biggest problem with the UK media - and I think it has come to a head this election - is that it really just prints what it wants to. Not what people want to read/hear/see. And that is what is really fuelling this "disconnect" that everyone seems to feel is behind everything.

The nadir was the Tory election campaign repeated banging on about things that it cared about. That the papers love writing about. And about which the average person could not give two shits about.

Which is why the reality of the UK August "revolt" was just a bunch of pissed up criminals who suddenly discovered they are in a the smallest minority possible, despite the medias desperate attempts to make it seem like a rerun of the French revolution.

Well 4% to go. The precedent is that 52% is an overwhelming majority that must be acted on IMMEDIATELY.
