Thread 13. We had a debate about whether there should be a new one but if no one answers this the whole series after 8 years plus will come to their end.

Brexit happened, although one time Leavers do not seem to appreciate this.
It's worth noting I think that Brexit was a Tory initiative and the Tory party has just received its worse electoral thrashing since 1832. Could it be entirely unrelated?

What next? A gradual rapprochement with the EU? A Norway style agreement?

@DuncinToffee

The decision about labelling demonstrates that it is not possible to be half in and half out of a union. Trying to please everyone always fails.

A brexit benefit !

Then Brexit left many European nations reluctant to continue backing the UK’s stance in international forums.

An aerial photo shows the Chagos Islands

UK hands sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius

In a historic move, the UK gives up sovereignty of a strategic group of islands in the Indian Ocean.

From Peston

If anyone in the Tory party wants to know the nitty gritty of all this, possibly they could ask for an introduction from the former minister Lord Frost - because his spouse Harriet Matthews has been the lead official negotiator for the foreign office on the Chagos treaty with Mauritius.

They most assuredly do not.

Brexit

I wanted to win an argument... What we expected was that the Cameron gov't would deliver it.

A grown up speaks.
All very well but the Brexit has happenned so is dead and buried and concreted over by the EU who have no impetus to see it being resurected as the TCA and WA are just fine (for most in the EU), and Europeans have adapted to the recent status quo.

Oh, I agree. Brexit is delivered and it is what it is.

"The moving finger writes ..." as Omar would have put it had he been in charge of Brexit.

Which really seems to wind up the extreme Brexiteers. They want it to be treated like some sort of living God.

Talkinpeace · 08/10/2024 13:25

nope

MaybeNotBob · 08/10/2024 19:20

So, 12% of Britons think Brexshit has gone well...

The 2% are on this thread?

So, who do with think the members of the party will vote for ?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cje343q1zy8o

I imagine they'll plump for Kemi Badenoch. She'd at least make things interesting (and lose) rather than Robert Jenrick who'll bore people senseless (and lose).

MaybeNotBob · 09/10/2024 19:04

I wonder what makes me think that the average member of the Tory party may not vote for Bad Enoch...

Talkinpeace · 09/10/2024 19:10

Last time they were given the vote I heard some openly saying "not the brown chap"
We do not know how many party members there still are, but their demographic is well known.

Peregrina · 09/10/2024 22:01

Surely Jenrick will get it because he is a boring middle aged white man. It will be even better if he has a pretty wife - just what the Tories go for.

Diversity isn't something Conservative leaders (recently anyway) have been lacking in. Badenoch seems to be the darling of the Conservative right for some reason. I don't get it, I really don't but then I didn't get Liz Truss either and they went for her by a decent margin.

Yes, but the only competition for her was, shall we say, somewhat duskier...

Badenoch, I'm told, tops the polls of Conservative members. We'll see before too long anyhow.

If Jenrick wins though I think it would be silly to attribute that, even mostly, to his being white and his opponent being black. While there will absolutely be people with rascist views among the membership (as there would be with any org of 150k ish members) I think they're well capable of picking the wrong person for reasons other than racism.

MaybeNotBob · 10/10/2024 07:26

Whichever one they pick, it's the wrong one!

MaybeNotBob · 12/10/2024 22:57

Former MI6 chief, Sir Alex Younger gives some Brexit truths.
“Putin would’ve been absolutely delighted by our decision (to leave the EU) and so would Xi.”
“Particularly since I've left office and I've travelled around Europe, I'm profoundly depressed."
“Just nobody mentions the UK. We've made ourselves irrelevant. And this is extraordinary. The beginning part of this century, we were the dominant force. France has effectively eclipsed us and you just don't hear a discussion of us.”
“I think Brexit has Brexit has marginalised us. It was kind of intended to do exactly that.”

Talkinpeace · 13/10/2024 14:21

And yet when the MEPs heckled Orban, the speaker of the Parliament used English
why ?
Because its THE language at international events
to which the UK is no longer invited 😞
