(previous thread)

That's "king" as a suffix not a prefix. Also part of a phrase.

You've lost me with the first passage about juries Jane?

I see no reason to apply the law as a juror in a society where ministers break the law with malice aforethought.

There ere already a few laws I would balk as judging anyway. But that's a different kettle of fish.

Juror's don't "apply the law", you probably know this. What they do, very importantly, is make decisions as to the innocence or guilt of the person before them regarding what that person is charged with, according to the evidence presented to them, to the standard of proof they are required to reach.

Your response in all cases, apparently, to being given such a responsibility is 'I acquit', automatically without even considering the evidence.

In that situation, what makes you confident that you've done your duty to the parties in the case, any more fully than the MP advocating law breaking has done his/hers?

Think what you like, I'll vote with my conscience thank you very much. You can do as you are told - it's your prerogative.

Maybe I'm not the only one

https://news.sky.com/story/extinction-rebellion-activists-who-smashed-hsbc-windows-found-not-guilty-of-criminal-damage-13010118

According to the group, the jury made several requests for further information during the course of the trial, including for an explanation of the Paris Climate Agreement, information on what the British government had done to address the climate crisis and an explanation as to how HSBC was able to come up with the estimated cost of the damage to the windows - just over half a million pounds - within hours of the action.

And who'd have thought I'd hear something my late DM sometimes muttered about broken windows ?

Extinction Rebellion activists who smashed HSBC windows found not guilty of criminal damage

A jury deliberated for two hours before returning its verdict, following a trial during which the activists said HSBC had made £80 billion of fossil fuels investments in the five years following the Paris Climate Agreement

Jurors can, of course, base their decision on literally any factor they chose and aren't. Mercifully most take their responsibilities seriously.

Your support of lawbreaking is noted though @SerendipityJane I'll remember that in any future conversations we have.

What is it with Brexiteers and their total lack of nuance ?

"It's not A so it must be B"

I am on record as saying I am not an anarchist - I possess too many brain cells.

However not slavishly adhering to the narrative of a corrupt and dissolute government is not a support for lawbreaking or lawbreakers.

Understanding an argument does not imply support for it. And if people can't see past that, then they really haven't got the basic skills to engage in the level of debate needed to advance as a whole.

Long time lurker on these threads but rarely post.

I live in Cornwall and as one of the poorest regions in the country this will hit hard. It wont affect the rich retirees and second home owners of course. 56.5% voted to leave the EU and no doubt it will be those who bleat about underfunded public services without making the connection between their vote and the council having no money to spend.

I'm not surprised; the shortfall was pointed out a while back. Between that and the sewage, it's a gloomy outlook.

  • Our estimates indicate that the negative impact of Brexit gradually escalates, reaching some 5-6 per cent of GDP or about £2,300 per capita by 2035. The reduction in real incomes resulting from the fall in the UK terms of trade associated with changes in trading relations with the European Union and the fall in productivity are the largest contributors to the estimated reduction in real GDP, with each accounting for over 2.5 percentage points.

Revisiting the Effect of Brexit - NIESR

The decision to leave the European Union has significantly shaped the UK economic landscape since the 2016 referendum. Over the ensuing years, the United Kingdom has experienced aneconomic environment characterised by low growth and, since the Covid-19...

Found a benefit, governemt can't blame the EU any longer for their mess, (

And ?

We live in a country where people born in 1990 are still happy to blame Wilson and Callaghan for all the countries woes.

The narrative is simply going to shift from "it's all the EUs fault" to "it was all the EUs fault".

I was just taken by surprise with that headline
