(previous thread)

That's "king" as a suffix not a prefix. Also part of a phrase.

James Felton@JimMFelton
Someone tell David Cameron he can’t just come back and take charge whenever he feels like it. We’re a country, not a child you’ve left in a pub.

Tony Blair's been sniffing round Kier Starmer for a role in the Labour party if it gets elected hasn't he? I wonder if this appointment sets a precedent (for recent times at least) and will encourage yet more old snouts in the trough.

DuncinToffee · 13/11/2023 22:35

Thanks for the new thread

And let us not forget how he lobbied for Greensill to be given a contract by the government (whilst being paid £1 million a year for 25 days work), which then went bust costing us£5Billion. Not him though, he sold his shares before that happened, netting him another £7 -odd million...

Let us not forget though that there are still plenty of Tories out there who think Labour are all tax and spend. They appear not to have taken on board that under this Tory Government taxes now are higher than they have been for decades, for the average wage earner, and that the spending isn't being used to invest, but has gone to enrich Boris Johnson and his mates.

While I am about it, had anyone noticed that Michelle Mone has finally admitted that yes, her family did benefit personally from the payments for the not fit for purpose PPE that she provided via a VIP lane. She has spent two years denying this, or in plain English, two years lying about it. But she's still in the Lords.

WaWaWaWaaaaaa · 14/11/2023 09:34

I'm amazed he is willing to show his face in public after the Greensill scandal. He has no shame.
Does being honest and decent mean nothing to politicians these days.

DowningStreetParty · 14/11/2023 09:45

I would be very happy and relieved if Tony Blair or Gordon Brown for that matter make a reappearance.

Peregrina · 14/11/2023 10:01

Or even David Miliband. They could all give the current shower a run for their money.

Both fell foul of the expenses scandal and had to pay back money they had stolen received.

The expenses scandal is such a great barometer of how honest the people involved were. It's interesting who came out as actually honest. Labours Alan Johnson did which wasn't a surprise.

Indeed. Someone who I knew at school, who became an MP, and whose family mine knew very well, didn't come out of the expenses scandal untouched. My parents were staggered - this was not the way he had been brought up!

prettybird · 14/11/2023 16:40

Some of what was claimed for was shameful Angry

On the other hand, some of what was "wrongfully" claimed I would have thought was a genuine expense for a commuting MP: for example, Jo Swinson got "done" for claiming for a 2nd hairdryer, yet I would've thought that that was a legitimate expense for an MP having to live in 2 places Confused

I see Kemi Badenoch is wittering on about a "memo of understanding" with Florida's rather distasteful Ron de Santis. Presumably we will sell them chocolate teapots and they will sell us ashtrays for motorbikes. I can only imagine they did the deal at one-legged arse kicking party ?

In totally expected news, UK Supreme Court find Rawanda scheme unlawful

Ffs

HOW much has this utter fuckfest cost taxpayers?

And leaving the ECHR will not change that.

Fr Paul@revpaulwhite
I'm old enough to remember when Brexit was about allowing the courts of this country to determine the legal questions of this country.

Well, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom has done just that.

But, of course, that will now be ignored by an unelected PM...

Slippertime · 15/11/2023 22:06

They won’t win at the GE so what does it matter. The country is screwed. Rishi is a useless pm and there’s no obvious replacement. I can see why people don’t bother voting these days.

HannibalHeyes · 15/11/2023 22:13

We can all remember Brexshitteers on here wanking on about making our own laws.

Well, now they don't seem to like our own laws, and want to just break them. But, apparently, it's OK if unelected ministers do it.

The mental gymnastics (emphasis on the "mental") required to go along with this are quite staggering...

LouiseCollins28 · 15/11/2023 22:25

People are allowed to want the outcomes they want. They're allowed to advocate for them. That said I largely agree with Hannibal here, people can't opt to obey the law only when it says what they'd like it to say.

I'm surprised that 30p Lee (maybe that should be 50p Lee now, inflation, innit) is still Dep. Chair of the Conservative party given his public call for today's judgement to be flouted. He should have been sacked for that.

I agree with Anderson about the frustration, but MPs shouldn't be advocating law breaking in any circumstances.

Had they been confident they'd win in court I'd have been tempted to have people loaded onto a plane ready for an immediate take off for Rwanda but clearly the government lost so that would have looked absurd. Let's see what the response is from the Govt but so far I'm not very impressed.

Crikey, Marina Hyde isn't holding back.

You know what ?

If I was on a jury then I can't think of any reason not to simply acquit out of principle. And neither can you.

The principle being law makers can never be law breakers. It is that simple.

You've lost me with the first passage about juries Jane?

your principle on "can never be law breakers" I'd natuarally sympathise with but it could be seen as a very stiff test, thats why I used the phrase "avocate lawbreaking". For example, someone who's received a fine/points for speeding in their car. Should they be permanently debarred from being a law maker?

I'm not sure legal professionals are held to quite that high a standard. Naturally I'd want to say "yes, any transgression and you're out" but that's going to exclude a hell of a lot of people.
