Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

The earth is flat

Big UK regulators (CMA, HSE, FSA) are struggling to adapt to post-Brexit roles, say MPs’ report, adding cost to business and risk to consumers. Some amazing nuggets here. Stay with me briefly….via @FT/1

Also reported in the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/12/uk-trade-regulators-struggling-cope-poor-brexit-planning-mps-say

still highly relevant.

pointythings · 12/10/2022 14:34

I don't think our new squirrel has seen any of the recent polls...

prettybird · 12/10/2022 14:39

Isn't it nice that we're being told that we can start on another thread and another thread and another thread. Wink

More to the point: Isn't it a shame that the sunlit uplands have not materialised never existed and that the content for these threads continues to manifest itself Sad

That need to avoid mentioning Brexit again

still talking about the result of a referendum that happened 6 years ago

Well I feel properly chastened now and will march myself off to the naughty step pronto.

Never again will I mistakenly see the links between an advisory 2016 referendum - - > a 2019 election where the will of the people won again on lies to ‘get Brexit done’ and despite a majority of the electorate voting for other parties - - > the whip being withdrawn from the last sensible 21 Tory MPs including Churchill’s grandsons - - > the actual leaving the EU in January 2020 - -> the ousting of one PM for carrying on their mendacious ways should’ve been for the mess he signed off - -> leading to the pseudo non-election of the new PM now intent on crashing our economy - -> the still lack of inward checks on goods entering the UK etc

Never!

Oh dear, looks like a denizen of the Sunlit Uplands is rattled Grin

borntobequiet · 12/10/2022 16:58

Very agitated.

IrisVersicolor · 12/10/2022 17:06

Regardless of when the referendum was held, we’re still only 19 months into Brexit itself. Isn’t everything going well?

verdantverdure · 12/10/2022 17:10

I always want to know how long before the Brexit is fully implemented with border checks etc and how long before we reach the sunlit uplands?

Because so far it's been six long years of life in this country getting shitter and shitter.

SerendipityJane · 12/10/2022 17:11

I see "Penny Mordaunt" is trending ...

50 years according to JRM

What now? As a replacement for Truss? God please no…

DuncinToffee · 12/10/2022 17:53

I think it was to do with her expressions during PMQs

ILeclercreturn · 12/10/2022 17:55

Despite only being a guy I have a wonderful recipe to share:
écureuil au pâté de noix
Shame I only have the red variety available here.

verdantverdure · 12/10/2022 18:23

50 years? That's convenient. We'll all be dead.

Jason118 · 12/10/2022 19:48

@ILeclercreturn - we missed you, heheheheSmile

“A new report from the Free Markets Forum (a project of the Institute of Economic Affairs) titled 30 Ideas for 2030 outlines a collection of recommendations for Government reform.

The report makes several concerning recommendations on childcare and early education in England:

  1. Removing the state’s involvement in the early years and childcare system: including removing the ‘free’ offer for families to access 15 hours of childcare
  2. Deregulating the sector: removing the requirement for settings to have adult:child ratios, qualification requirements and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  3. Reforming childminder requirements: looking at registration, regulatory inspection and training requirements.”
www.pacey.org.uk/news-and-views/news/news-new-report-makes-concerning-proposals-for-ea/

Very worrying proposals, especially for the safeguarding implications. If the IEA is influencing Government policy, we need to know exactly who is behind them and why they think the deregulation of childcare is desirable.

verdantverdure · 13/10/2022 12:04

Hasn't Liz Truss already been trailing all of that?

Nice to know that the IEA are running our country.

Who runs the IEA?

Who are they?

Because their influence is destroying our country.

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2022 12:14

IEA is not going to tell us that

Watch this LBC clip from last night

twitter.com/LBC/status/1580286512100671488?t=C81LJjEPFUdUNDOeTBjggw&s=19

Nobody can go on your website and see who funds the organisation'.

Political Editor for Byline Times Adam Bienkov slams the IEA for not being open about who is paying for the website.

Tanith · 13/10/2022 12:15

Liz Truss wanted to introduce a good deal of it (agencies and relaxing of ratios) when she was Elizabeth Truss, Early Years minister in 2012. There was a huge campaign against it. Her proposals simply don't work, but she didn't listen to the experts back then, either.
Now she wants to reintroduce her proposals, presumably because she hasn't got any other ideas.

This think tank suggests going further and deregulating it all: that bonfire of rights and regulations Government has been talking about.

I can imagine how the loss of the 3-4 year old funding will be regarded by parents already struggling with childcare costs.

SerendipityJane · 13/10/2022 16:33

Excellent analysis here
