Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

Welcome back @ILeclercreturn , and great to see so many familiar posters too.

@RedToothBrush are you there?

It was so sad to lose DGR and BCF.

Hopefully they are lurking and will return here when they feel up to it

Very much hope so, smashing.

SerendipityJane · 06/10/2022 08:13

Interesting tactic from the Goebbels playbook by the BBC. At least your taxpayer pounds weren't wasted on history for broadcasters.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63151813

Notice the title (which is all 80% of the readership will ever see)

"Liz Truss heads to first summit of new club of nations"

Notice how skim reading gives the impression that Liz Truss is heading the summit. Which could not be further from the truth. However it's good enough to fool a few "AI" engines that crawl newspages.

Prove me wrong.

SerendipityJane · 06/10/2022 08:20

Generally, I'm not a fan of occasion poetry. But every so often you catch something that just works. Seen elsewhere - not sure of author:

Simple Simon met a pieman,
Going to the fair;
Says Simple Simon to the pieman,
“Let me taste your wares”
Says the pieman to Simple Simon,
“First, the pie must grow,
The bankers must have bonuses
And benefits fall low.”
Simple Simon had no way of
Paying for his heating;
Kwasi didn’t care as
He was at a hedge fund meeting
Simple Simon worried that
He might face dismissal;
“If you want employment rights”
Liz says, “you can whistle.”
Simon simply cannot pay
His mortgage though he tries;
Liz says, “have I told you of
My story of pork pies?”

Thank you all, the kindness of strangers is peculiar.
Looking at the article on BBC website referenced by SerendipityJane, when I got to the list of likely attendees it struck me that many, if not all of them are signed up members of the ECHR so with Braverman and many Tories stating they want to leave the ECHR that will be a major stumbling block. There are so many small but significant details mentioned in business reports and other articles that give strong hints about the problems the UK will face. Deaths of workers on the football stadium in Dubai where healh and safety is rather lax then consider which countries might invest in the UK and JRM announcing the scrapping of 'rules' in the push for 'enterprise zones' where the usual planning regulations will either be scrapped or bribery will allow relaxation.

DuncinToffee · 06/10/2022 08:49

Also from that articlle

Another draw for the UK is Turkey, a big non-EU player. Norway, a key supplier of energy to the UK, is also showing up.

But Turkey joining the EU was why we had to leave.....

There's no future in that organisation for the UK. We'll forever be second class members. And remember the fury Brexiteers had when it was suggested the UK become a "slow track" EU member before the referendum.

Meanwhile, the UK governments plan to double red tape for UK businesses proceeds on track : www.theregister.com/2022/10/06/new_dcms_head_newly_independent/

The TL;DR is that if you are traitorous enough to do business with the EU, you're gonna need a bigger compliance team.

ILeclercreturn · 06/10/2022 14:29

The increase in Brexit red tape is (I am pretty sure) the same 'red tape' you need to ship anything to anywhere so all paperwork requires the same transit documentation and conformity. The increase simply represents the 'economies' that were had by being an EU member (same trade bloc) so for the companies that have always traded internationally only, there is no change. So the savings were made because you could just put the address on the box and pay the postage and away it went. IF it was destined for the EU. Of course compliance and insurance will also be adding to the excitement (and cost). Hey it's wonderful getting what you voted for!

ILeclercreturn · 06/10/2022 14:35

Ouch!
British Prime Minister Liz Truss is one of several non-EU leaders in Prague to launch a "European Political Community," as the bloc seeks to enhance relations with non-member states.

Nothing to add. Just pmk

HesterAndPearlInBrightSunshine · 07/10/2022 03:09

Posted on another thread; this depressed me (and is not exactly a surprise):

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/06/revealed-rightwing-slash-and-burn-ideas-that-could-be-blueprint-for-truss

Peregrina · 07/10/2022 08:03

Where do you start with the proposals above? Allowing graduates to teach without qualifications already happens in both Independent schools and Academies. But let's go a bit further - allow anyone who fancied being a Doctor to have a go and not go to medical school but just have a crack at being a surgeon.

I could go on, but you will get the drift. The big question of course is - Who voted for this? Truss and Kwarteng have no mandate for this.

SerendipityJane · 07/10/2022 08:48

Who voted for this? Truss and Kwarteng have no mandate for this.

And we have no mechanism to hold them to account. It's a totalitarian dictators wet dream.

This is where you end up when you've been beaten to death with "the will of the people".

Oh, and by the way, they do have a mandate for this. Someone voted for these fuckers and that is all you need. Even King Charles has twigged - hence his being allowed to vet new legislation. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/oct/04/king-charles-allowed-to-vet-proposed-scottish-rent-freeze-law - something we were lectured "never happened" in these very threads as I recall.

DuncinToffee · 07/10/2022 09:14

Isn't that what they are proposing for strikes, bring in agency workers.

HesterAndPearlInBrightSunshine · 07/10/2022 11:31

Does anyone think this nightmare can end? Feels like now they're only really getting started. How long will it take to undo all that damage?

HappyWinter · 07/10/2022 12:01

Just when you think it can't get any worse...it does. I hope the nightmare does end. I can't believe someone is worse than Boris! How is that even possible?

I'm hoping 2023 is better, I said that about 2022 and it's worse than Covid years. I've stopped saying it can't get worse because every single time something else happens.

HesterAndPearlInBrightSunshine · 07/10/2022 12:20

Yes, there's real tension in the air. I'm in the US right now (travel there regularly)- during Trump years I did feel that the UK was on a slippery slope but not yet steeped in the same political chaos, not quite at the same level, despite the very legitimate (100% accurate) concerns voiced on these threads about the consequences of Brexit. But heading back home I always had a sense of relief - and not just because it's good to be home. Now, I genuinely don't know which country has more uncertain times ahead. It's a view shared by most anglophile Americans I know. Looks bad from afar.

Words · 07/10/2022 14:38

That's a really useful, if sobering, perspective from the US, Hester.

HesterThrale · 07/10/2022 17:18

Haven't posted for ages, although I did regularly from the start, and I still keep an eye on the thread.
Great to see some longstanding names here. Hello Leclerc, Peregrina and everyone who's changed names to something I don't recognise!
I learnt so much on this thread from people like DGR, RTB and BCF. I recall one of them saying it'd get worse before it got better. It has got worse, but I feel peoples' eyes are opening. I think we're nearly at the point of lancing the boil. Soon for the long climb out.

DrBlackbird · 07/10/2022 23:37

This is where you end up when you've been beaten to death with "the will of the people"

it was interesting and a tad disconcerting to read of Musk’s tweets going on about "the will of the people" to legitimise Russia’s so called annexation of eastern Ukraine. I’ve come to loathe that term. Seems people’s will is both easy to manipulate and misrepresent. What is happening to democracy. Where are the political leaders we so desperately need. Sigh.

Very well said!
