Part 10 of our long running thread.

Not sure what to say, really, other than it is worse than I feared.

Strap in, folks. It's gonna be a rough ride...

No real harm has currently come to me as a result of Brexit. In fairness I've yet to see personally realised an economic benefit, for example, that I could link to Brexit either in (for example) financial terms i.e. related to my personal circumstances.

To show this, interest rates going up is absolutely of personal benefit to me financially, but I would risk looking more foolish than I already do if I tried to link that directly to Brexit. I've enough sense to recognise as well that the very same measure is harmful to other people, and might be harmful to me too were my circs different than they are.

If the scenario Alexandra suggests where the UK performs poorly economically and comparable nations inside the EU do better I would of course acknowledge that. This might well present a powerful case for a different relationship between the UK and the EU too.

If the opportunities of Brexit are appropriately maximised I don't think that will happen but if it does over a long term then I'm entirely prepared to say that. I'd also recognise whatever I'd say if that happened would be basically irrelevant because the case for a rethink would be overwhelming.

Lucky you. Many of my friends are small business owners previously with a good proportion of their output exported to the EU. They have been significantly negatively affected by the increased red tape meaning costs are up and demand is down. Trying to switch to somewhere like the Far East/ Africa would be a burden too far for them on a cost basis. One has moved to the Netherlands as 80% of their output went either there, Germany or Austria.

We urgently need a better relationship with the EU, both science and trade but also on FOM in some sectors, though i don't know if this sort of cherry picking is possible....

I don't know what the opportunities of Brexit are? we do not have the money within the UK to fund new tech in EV, Hydrogen or Green technologies, the amounts needed are in the 10s, possible 100s of billions and we don't have that, UK is also not attracting inward investment, like EU and USA are.... so we need to be in collaborative programs with the EU... but we are not even trying to be in them.

The answer from the Tories is tax cuts but they are not in any shape or form going to attract investment, companies need stability, access to markets, good health and education for its employees...

Do we have any of this?

The Telegraph...

verdantverdure · 31/01/2023 13:28

I read in the FT fairly recently that British people are expected to be poorer than people in Slovenia by the end of this year, and poorer than people in Poland by the end of the next.

Already you can't get an ambulance or a police officer if you need one. How bad is it going to get?

The UK economy will shrink and perform worse than other advanced economies, including Russia

"Topping the list of perceived benefits to the UK was control of immigration and borders, selected by nearly a third (30 per cent) of those who could name a benefit. Also near the top of the list were the Covid vaccine rollout (17 per cent), fishing rights (12 per cent) and abolition of best before dates on food packaging (10 per cent). These were joined by variations on the theme of taking back control (12 per cent). Taking back control also tops the list of perceived benefits to the individual, sharing the top spot with the vaccine rollout (both on 21 per cent)."

Give me strength.

How do people not know that we don't do checks on incoming lorries on some EU- UK routes, and that immigration is a) way up and b) not the sort we need.

@LouiseCollins28

Do you understand why there are zero posts from Remainers here giving consideration to the idea that they might be wrong?

It's because unlike ideologues, they form conclusions based on concrete evidence.

All signs point to them being 100% correct. The rational conclusion to solid evidence is the Remainer ( and Rejoiner) position.

verdantverdure · 31/01/2023 19:29

7% of voters - and only 10% of Leave voters - want to stick with the current Brexit deal; 51% - and 43% even of Leave voters - want a closer relationship with the EU.

I truly feel sorry for you all but it's a mess you all made by backing the wrong horse.

We didn’t all vote for Brexit by any means, the point of this and similar threads is to detail, analyse and discuss the untoward consequences of the unfortunate decision made by a minority of the population - quite a few of whom are now dead - and consider (if possible) ways in which it can be mitigated.
Very few think rejoining the EU is remotely possible in the near future and we are under no illusion as as to how inept and untrustworthy a potential partner we are now seen to be. However we are still a country on the edge of Europe, with a large and (still) functioning economy and considerable expertise and international influence to offer.

Please don’t lecture us here on this thread, @NotYt.
