Are there any Brexiters left?

... on here, or more or less anywhere on SM? The last entry on 'Leave Means Leave' is months old. Though I understand most sites are 'member only', now....

I am really quite surprised how they more or less evaporated on MN! They appear to be gone!

Why?

Was I an idiot to respond to so many, like, off the top of my head, mummmytime? Were they a bot??

The Arms collapsed. The victors are, well... gone!

Why is that?

Anyone who knows me will know I am a Remainer, but I patiently read, often 500 threads!- pros and cons, to 'get a handle' on the direction of travel.

However, now absolutely no one, bar Clav, is standing up for Leave.

I find the silence more chilling than the arguing.

There won't be a US trade deal if there is a No Deal Brexit.

However, none of those who lead us into this mess have any interest in sorting it out. Johnson plans to depart soon. Farage is only interested in masks. Rats leaving a sinking ship springs to mind.

ShowingOut · 07/11/2020 08:46

There will be a Deal.

DeeplyMovingExperience · 07/11/2020 08:53

I don't mind admitting that I cried that morning when we woke up to the result of the referendum.

I was in Germany just before covid, and I was regularly asked what my view was on Brexit. My one-word answer was "embarrassment". They generally thought it was highly amusing and that we are mad/stupid in equal measure.

AlexaShutUp · 07/11/2020 08:54

There will be a Deal.

I suspect that there probably will be a deal of sorts, that will probably be hailed as a great victory. The reality is that it will be far worse than the deal originally negotiated by Theresa May, which was already much worse than the deal that we had when we were in the EU. However, it will be heralded with great fanfare, Boris will be triumphant and the Brexiteers will be fooled into thanking that the whole thing has been a resounding success. The economic catastrophe that follows will conveniently be blamed on covid-19, meaning that Boris, Farage and their cronies will never be held accountable for the damage that they have done.

I voted remain but accept we lost. I don't think those who voted brexit have changed their minds at all. They are silent now because we left the EU on 31 Jan 2020 and on 1 Jan 2021 the transition period ends.

We spent a lot of time in history lessons at school learning about the "Repeal of the Corn Laws". That issue too is no longer a topic the UK goes on about. Same with in its day if we should come off the gold standard. Issues come and go.

HannahStern · 07/11/2020 10:06

Any deal obtained now will be far inferior to the deal Theresa May negotiated two years ago.

Johnson no longer holds any 'Trump' cards. Financial Services, so critical for the UK, is now under the control of Ireland who now have leverage if the UK refuse to honour its commitments under the Withdrawal Agreement.

The polling suggests otherwise but yes the majority have forgotten why they wanted Brexit or as a leaver friend of mine said "i wanted to shake the tree and see what would happen"

It was a different world back then, the UK had Empire and was a world industrial super power, with few competitors, even in the 1930s.
Brexit on the other hand is at a time when the UK is in decline and we are far from a super power in a highly competitive world.

Also, Brexit wasn't done in any firm belief it was best for the country but to help Johnson get into power, had he stuck to his word and supported Cameron, we'd be in a different place now, if Remain had been a better path to no10, thats what he'd have supported.

Xenia · 07/11/2020 10:46

Yes, I only mentioned the Corn Laws because it was a topic that divided the nation in the same way I suppose just like even today I have a problem with Guy Fawkes day being a Catholic and if you went back in the day Protestants and Catholics were killing each other in England with priests hiding in priest's holes (which reminds me of how awful the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) (No. 4) Regulations 2020 are - churches (and mosques etc) prohibited from allowing people in for services (only private prayer, weddings with 6 people etc). Yet no one seems remotely bothered about the biggest reduction in our human rights in English history possibly

ListeningQuietly · 07/11/2020 11:29

The EU will offer Johnson a deal.
He will accept whatever is on offer.
He has no choice as Biden has much more important issues to deal with
than a country which chose to shoot itself in the foot again and again.

There are 55 days till the end of transition
and NONE of the systems are ready in the channel ports
to make sure the shops can operate in January
no matter what deal is agreed.

Peregrina · 07/11/2020 11:52

I thought the Repeal of the Corn Laws split the Tory party in two, and that the memory of this haunts them to this day.

However, it's a long time since I was at school, so my memory may be at fault.

longwayoff · 07/11/2020 16:49

Trump's out. There will be a deal. Good Friday agreement will stand.

bellinisurge · 07/11/2020 17:06

They are so fucked with an Irish American President.

HannahStern · 07/11/2020 17:08

The first phone call will undoubtedly be to Angela, followed by Emmanuel.

The days of UK influence are now long gone.

So how quickly will Johnson go?

Just got video footage from family in NY. Fabulous noise!

longwayoff · 07/11/2020 17:44

Thank all the gods. Open one of those prepper bottles bellini. It's worth it. CheersWine

ListeningQuietly · 07/11/2020 17:45

Bellini
I was just watching that.
The weather is gorgeous on the Eastern seaboard this afternoon.
Party time.

bellinisurge · 07/11/2020 17:54

Hell yeah! I know there's a lot of work to be done and a lot of people hurting but .... cheers!

Clavinova · 07/11/2020 18:09

The days of UK influence are now long gone.

The UK is due to host both the G7 Summit and the UN Climate Change Conference in 2021 - that sounds quite influential to me. Joe Biden will be visiting twice next year - coronavirus allowing.

The Times link wasn't very accurate with this;

"Trump is on course for a landslide defeat with his Democratic opponents set to land a historic “triple whammy” by seizing control of the presidency, the Senate and the House of Representatives."

  • hardly a "landslide defeat" - why should I trust the rest of the article?

JMG1234 · 07/11/2020 18:26

I voted leave too. I have no interest in debating the rights and wrongs of leave v remain on social media, even with friends. That time has long passed for me.

Peregrina · 07/11/2020 18:27

In the same spirit that you celebrated the 'overwhelming' Brexit win of 52%:48%. Biden's won, it's the will of the people.

Clavinova · 07/11/2020 18:34

Did the Times forecast an "overwhelming Brexit win" as well? I missed that.

Peregrina · 07/11/2020 18:46

But, it's the will of the American people. Not what a newspaper thinks. Even the Mail and Telegraph.

Clavinova · 07/11/2020 18:52

But, it's the will of the American people.

My point was the accuracy of the article in the Times and the worth of the editor's opinion - nothing else.
