Following on the thread about how we will measure the successes or failures of Brexit, I’m just leaving this one here for people to record the successes and failures as they occur / as they see them

All welcome if you discuss the subject of the thread - this isn’t a thread for moaning about the fact Brexit is happening! 😁

Failure -

My job is under threat for the second time as a direct result of Brexit. I survived the Brexit redundancies last time although colleagues did lose their jobs.

KenDodd · 27/01/2020 19:08

Failure (imo, some may view this as a success) -

Removal of legal requirement to allow access for child refugees.
Remove of legal requirement to protect workers rights and Erasmus.

Don't know of any pluses to Brexit yet.

Bearbehind · 27/01/2020 19:12

That is shit about your job ken - I do hope you survive the redundancies again

On the other points though, removing the legal requirement to do those things doesn’t mean we won’t do them does it?

OP posts:
Coppersulphate · 27/01/2020 19:15

The govt. has said that the rights of child refugees and the protection of workers rights will be provided for in separate bills.
They just wanted a bare bones WA.
Makes sense to me.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 27/01/2020 19:17

removing the legal requirement to do those things doesn’t mean we won’t do them does it?

It doesn't mean we can't do them, but I'll believe it when I see it...

KenDodd · 27/01/2020 19:20

@Coppersulphate

And BJ would never lie would he.

KenDodd · 27/01/2020 19:22

Anyway, as I said, some people may view the removal of the legal requirement to do those things as a success (see above).

ListeningQuietly · 27/01/2020 19:29

Failure : lack of access to Erasmus for my younger child.
Failure : cessation of EU funding in rural areas costing several friends their jobs already
Failure : lack of access to EU research programmes going forwards impacting on employment prospects for both my kids

frumpety · 27/01/2020 19:31

Ok here's a couple:

  1. if we don't have parity in the number or quality of trade deals, so if the deals we manage to negotiate are fewer or worse than the ones we currently have as members of the EU.
  2. Given how much time/effort/money the UK has invested in regulatory alignment in so many areas ( and have been instrumental as an EU member in shaping it, not something that has been foisted upon us ) , I think if we move away from that alignment and have to spend more time/effort/money to do something almost exactly the same, well I would see that as a failure.
  3. If the NHS doesn't receive additional funding to the tune of 350 million a week. This was a huge promise to make and I know those promising it, reneged on it almost as soon as the ballots were counted in the referendum. So this would be a failure.
malylis · 27/01/2020 19:33

How will Brexit be a success?

Never.

Gonna laugh at all the tory voting northern towns.

Reap what you sow.

MysteryTripAgain · 27/01/2020 19:38

@KenDodd

Good luck with your Job.

Mistigri · 27/01/2020 19:38

Some numbers.

  • UK has 4,000 customs agents

after Brexit,

  • up to 250,000 SMEs may find themselves doing customs declarations for first time.
  • declarations could spike from 55m to 270m in a WTO scenario

Per the Daily Telegraph

MysteryTripAgain · 27/01/2020 19:43

Here my list so far;

Success - democracy preserved.

Failures - too soon to say.

Expectations are:

Trade deals with non EU countries that balance the trade deficit UK has with the EU.

Evidence that NHS does actually receive additional funding.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 27/01/2020 19:53

Success - democracy preserved.

Democracy isn't exclusive to Brexit.

malylis · 27/01/2020 19:58

Brexiters never get to claim democracy again having supported the porogation of parliament.

Or Henry VIII laws or any of the other violations.

what you really mean is, we won once and now we get to make the rules.

Not democratic.

The word preservation is actually a paradox in relation to Brexit. Brexit is about tearing everything down.

MysteryTripAgain · 27/01/2020 20:06

Democracy isn't exclusive to Brexit

Is that a success or a failure?

frumpety · 27/01/2020 20:08

I personally think we should let Mystery have democracy preserved because unfortunately one fact we can never get away from is that the majority of the electorate who turned up and voted in the referendum did vote to leave the EU. Everything that happens as a result of that vote on that day back in June 2016 is exactly what they voted for. Isn't it ? Smile

Lonelycrab · 27/01/2020 20:12

@malylis exactly. If anything, defining Brexit as some beacon of democracy actually weakens it.

I know there’s nothing we can do about the current situation,

Doesn’t mean it’s not a car crash of epic proportions that may well take us all down.

But like mystery says, it’s too early to tell.... But isn’t that a bit like climate change deniers that won’t actually accept anything is wrong until their own house is on fire?

OP, if you don’t like what people post

Ignore them. The thread will last longer then. Wink

Bearbehind · 27/01/2020 20:14

I plan to lonely 😁

OP posts:
GhostofFrankGrimes · 27/01/2020 20:15

Is that a success or a failure?

Neither. Democracy existed with or without Brexit.

Katharinblum · 27/01/2020 20:17

malylis why are you specifically laughing at northern tory voting towns ?
Why single them out as more deserving of the shitshow that will inevitably ensue ? Bizarre Hmm

Lonelycrab · 27/01/2020 20:21

I plan to lonely

Well you didn’t do to well last thread- you let good posts go without comment but spent a lot of your posts marshalling how we should feel. Hope this one is more constructive. You have to realise many peoples lives are on the line here, and not approach things like you’re an offshore millionaire, for example.

Hi mystery Smile

Bearbehind · 27/01/2020 20:38

lonely it is a little ironic that you are posting to moan about me moaning about other’s posts! 😂
