Following on the thread about how we will measure the successes or failures of Brexit, I’m just leaving this one here for people to record the successes and failures as they occur / as they see them

All welcome if you discuss the subject of the thread - this isn’t a thread for moaning about the fact Brexit is happening! 😁

24 + 32 does not equal 46

Nor is 48% a larger amount than 52%

TatianaLarina · 31/01/2020 16:59

Depends what you’re referring to. Maths and science generally has correct answers which are verifiable.

Brexit will either impact the economy or it won’t.

If it does then all the people who believed it wouldn’t are wrong. They may find excuses to blame other factors - EU’s fault, a downturn was coming anyway etc, but it’s either true or it’s not.

According to The Independent Boris is set to call for a “Canada-style”, tariff-free trade agreement with the EU. But European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has warned that Britain “cannot retain the benefits of membership” after leaving.

According to The Independent Boris is set to call for a “Canada-style”, tariff-free trade agreement with the EU

So are you still moving to Canada or going to wait and see if UK has Canada deal?

But European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has warned that Britain “cannot retain the benefits of membership” after leaving.

And?

malylis · 31/01/2020 17:18

Where is it cast in stone?

Well there are facts and then there aren't facts.

MysteryTripAgain · 31/01/2020 17:24

Well there are facts and then there aren't facts

Let’s start with facts which are indisputable:

UK will leave the EU in 5 hours, 41 minutes and-23 seconds.

Remain supporters can’t change the above fact.

That’s me done. Now let’s see your list of aren’t facts.

MysteryTripAgain
So, we are certain there is a clock in your hotel room in the Netherlands.
We know that you land in the UK at 10pm
will get to your house in time for the silent Bongs at 11
and then scoot off back out of the country next week.
All else is just hot air and stirring to detract from actual outcomes

MysteryTripAgain · 31/01/2020 17:58

So, we are certain there is a clock in your hotel room in the Netherlands

Incorrect. Wall clock is in office.

We know that you land in the UK at 10pm

And?

will get to your house in time for the silent Bongs at 11

What are the silent Bongs?

scoot off back out of the country next week

And?

All else is just hot air and stirring to detract from actual outcomes

An actual outcome can only be known retrospectively, not prospectively as remain supporters claim.

jasjas1973 · 31/01/2020 18:27

Another I know better statement

Yes, what's your point?

Does an Virologist know more about coronavirus than someone who is a welder...

You seem to struggle with the concept that some people know more than others.

MysteryTripAgain · 31/01/2020 18:36

Does an Virologist know more about coronavirus than someone who is a welder

Yes

You seem to struggle with the concept that some people know more than others

Never disputed that people have more knowledge and experience in their own individual fields than those who work in different fields, but how does that relate to Brexit?

Who on this planet can say they have more Brexit knowledge and experience than anyone else? Brexit has never happened before so where are the years of experience and knowledge coming from that entitles anyone to say

I know better

ListeningQuietly · 31/01/2020 18:50

Good thing about Brexit :
MysteryTripAgain will clear off back to the Far East and stay there Grin

jasjas1973 · 31/01/2020 18:56

Who on this planet can say they have more Brexit knowledge and experience than anyone else?

Trade negotiators, economists, WTO, treasury, market analysts, currency dealers.....

You can pick holes in all these people but in the case of the virologist and corona... corona is a brand new infection but you acknowledge he/she will know more than someone who isn't an expert.....

My point which i do think you understand (you are just being argumentative) is that complex decisions should be left to those with the most understanding and that is not the general population, inc me and you.

MysteryTripAgain · 31/01/2020 19:12

Trade negotiators, economists, WTO, treasury, market analysts, currency dealers

As there has never been a Brexit before how can any of the above persons say they have prior experience and know better?

corona is a brand new infection but you acknowledge he/she will know more than someone who isn't an expert

Missed the word corona before I replied. My reply was intended to be that virologists know more about viruses than welders.

complex decisions should be left to those with the most understanding and that is not the general population, inc me and you

Some why was that principle not applied in 1975 referendum?

ListeningQuietly · 31/01/2020 19:26

Mystery
How is the mood at checkin in Schipol?
Are your views welcome there ?
Is it still foggy?
or are you actually still in your mum's house in Moscow

MysteryTripAgain · 31/01/2020 19:48

Seems to be fewer people around than previously. Nobody has raised Brexit. There is no fog.

My mother is UK citizen and has never been to Moscow or entered the Russian federation

jasjas1973 · 31/01/2020 21:31

As there has never been a Brexit before how can any of the above persons say they have prior experience and know better?

Brexit (from a economic pov) is leaving a FTA, the advantages of joining a FTA are well known..... leaving the political structures is more of a unknown but either way these sorts of people have a better idea than you or i.

Things happen in technology, medicine that have never been before but you don't get a civil engineer to do pioneering surgery or a heart surgeon to build the world's longest bridge.

Anyway, enjoy your flight!

Lonelycrab · 31/01/2020 21:49

David Cameron.

Doesn’t just fuck pigs, he fucks entire countries.

MysteryTripAgain · 31/01/2020 22:59

@jasjas1973

One question.

Where are those who are both educated and experienced in Brexitology that can use their hindsight to forecast with certainty what will happen in the future?

MysteryTripAgain · 31/01/2020 23:01

The rings have just happened

jasjas1973 · 01/02/2020 08:29

There is little certainty in life, even a minor op can result in MRSA and even death, that doesn't mean however, that a layman knows more than his surgeon.

Back to the OP, Johnson to tell EU and all govt ministers to prepare for the imposition of full tariffs on EU goods by the end of the year.
Its designed to force the EU into reaching a 'deal asap.

Not entirely sure on the wisdom of this but does explain why Erasmus and the rights of refugee children were excluded from the WA bill.

MysteryTripAgain · 01/02/2020 08:56

There is little certainty in life

Says a remainer who has been saying for years that Brexit is a certain disaster.

jasjas1973 · 01/02/2020 09:29

Yep! what's the problem with that? Brexit disaster is the little bit that is certain......

frumpety · 01/02/2020 09:55

Well we are out.
Everything that happens now is entirely down to Boris, due to his majority he can get anything he wants through Parliament without censure. He can't blame remain MP's as he got rid of them all from his side of the house and there isn't enough of an opposition to prevent any vote passing.
He can't blame the EU, because it is natural for 27 countries of a trading bloc to work together to get the best outcome for themselves. He was instrumental in campaigning for and delivering Brexit. He is the Prime minister. The buck stops with him.

malylis · 01/02/2020 10:06

The buck stops with leave voters.

If its good they get to be right, and they will tell us ad nauseam.

It its bad, they get to own that too.

jasjas1973 · 01/02/2020 10:21

Well, the 'press will try and make sure the Tories don't get the blame for anything.

Only IF opinion polls turn against the tories and/or him will he be held accountable but that needs an alternative and atm there isn't one.
