Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

Amount of political / legal insights and JIT commentary is much appreciated though (despite the random goings on) so thanks to RTB and other contributors for adding some clarity - what clarity is possible under the circumstances anyhow - on Cummings BJ's ducking and diving Flowers

ArseDarkly · 19/10/2019 22:51

BigChoc - it's like you're trying to study the contract for the house while shackled to your deranged OH who's shouting 'WHY CAN'T WE JUST MOVE!!' in your ear over and over again

Hoooo · 19/10/2019 22:51

It's not going well for him, is it?

When privileged posh boys get thwarted it can get ugly....

thecatfromjapan

No, you're not. I love your posts Brew

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2019 22:52

I'm a bit out of the loop.
So BJ is looking at bringing WA2 to the House on Monday now? Does the Letwin amendment still stand if BJ is successful in this?

DrBlackbird · 19/10/2019 22:52

And the humour, I'm appreciating that for sure Grin

LouiseCollins28 · 19/10/2019 22:54

If I honestly believed that’s what they were doing Hooo I’d agree with you 100%. As far as I’m concerned, they aren’t being honest, this is all more delay, political games and entirely directed at stopping Brexit.

“More scruitiny” is stalling for time, basically it’s a lie. 75% of new deal is the same as the old deal. That deal the May WA was rejected. This time they withheld support again for the Johnson WA.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 22:54

Bercow is checking to see if they're allowed to do that, given Letwin, I think, OYBBK.

Arse, I'd be LTB, not buying a house with that person! 😂

HateIsNotGood · 19/10/2019 22:55

BCF - so by whatever actions created the situation that we have now, because the UK invoked A50 way back then, no one needs to care right now about how the EU27 millions are being affected?

Not good enough - very selfish - UK1 blaming UK2 for the negative effects on EU27 (that neither UK1 nor UK2 even recognized today) does not go very far towards apologizing to the EU27 for screwing up their lives. Not that anyone has yet even thought that apologizing to the EU for being so indecisive. might be, at the very least, a courteous thing to do.

Selfish, selfish people - still thinking about just yourselves.

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 22:56

I think so, OYBK.

Someone wise will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it can't be passed without scrutiny now.

However, as others have said, scrutiny will be subject to the time given (of not) by an extension.

(Is that right, everyone?)

derxa · 19/10/2019 22:57

I'm being horrible tonight. In the words of scottishmummy 'it's just words on a screen' or some such Grin

prettybird · 19/10/2019 22:57

Fucking liar of a Brexit Commissioning Editor for the Telegraph on SKY's Press Preview Angry: he just complained that the Speaker this afternoon after the proceedings said that if BJ didn't send the letter then he would - saying that this was inappropriate and improper of the Speaker who was over-reaching.

No. He. Didn't. Angry

He said that if he was instructed by the courts to send the letter on behalf of parliament, he would do so - but that he would also have to seek advice before he did so. Angry

Entirely proper if instructed by the court. Confused

But I suppose it's strange concept - complying with the law HmmAngry

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 22:57

Louise, you're rather naive, aren't you?

If they'd agreed the deal we could've still no dealed if the extra legislation wasn't passed in time, and BoZo wouldn't have had to send the Benn letter. So, because he's so damn untrustworthy, Letwin brought the amendment. BoZo was hoisted by his own petard.

This means all the legislation will be in place and then the deal will be voted on. Incentive to move quickly, yes?

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 22:58

You can't mention scottishmummy without also mentioning the creepy wee brackets!

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 22:59

Louise Have you read it?

I haven't.

I know for sure my MP hasn't.

I know Faisal Islam has, and so has Keir Starmer.

But I think most of the press and the MPs need some time.

And it needs to be debated, so that people can collaborate in understanding its implications and complexities.

Actually, I think you are massively trusting.

There is no way I would think it's OK to pass something this important without serious scrutiny.

derxa · 19/10/2019 22:59

Are MPs very poor/slow readers though Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2019 23:00

Thanks Cat and Fluffy*

tobee · 19/10/2019 23:00

But who the hell would think it was a good idea to not scrutinise it? Whatever way you stood on Brexit? This is why is so ridiculous to pretend your a decent politician and insist on October 31st exit. Is is not one of the biggest pieces of legislation in years? Decades? Maybe centuries? Why is rushing it a good idea? Obviously, the vote was a long time ago, but this "deal" has only been available to look at for a very short time. It's disingenuous crap (at best) to pretend otherwise.

Hoooo · 19/10/2019 23:02

I doubt my MP can find his own arsehole, let alone read complex legal text...

LouiseCollins28 · 19/10/2019 23:03

If there is any intent to move quickly from MPs Fluffy then yes that’s true. I don’t believe there is any intent from a large proportion of MPs to move Brexit forward at all though.

Ellie56 · 19/10/2019 23:03

Louise Why would you vote for anything without being fully aware of what you were voting for? According to the Guardian the papers were only distributed this morning. Five hundred odd pages. And no financial impact assessment. Hmm

twnews.co.uk/gb-news/rebel-amendment-defeat-is-yet-another-painful-bellyflop-for-boris-johnson

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 23:04

Though, OYBBK, it may be the WAIB they're putting forwards, which is the implementation bill, not the deal itself. I got myself confused with all the acronyms earlier!

tobee · 19/10/2019 23:04

Hooo Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 23:06

Louise, it's for the government to put the necessary legislation to parliament. If they put it to them, then it will be debated / voted on. Stop passing the buck to those to have no control over this process!

ListeningQuietly · 19/10/2019 23:08

Very late placemark.
I met up with babooshka
I wore the redtoothbrushes for you all - I was clocked walking down the train home wearing them.
I went to see Jonathon Pie this evening

Today was FAB
the atmosphere was different from March because there was more despair
but the cheer when "Letwin" passed was great

And Jonathon Pie was SO RIGHT
Do not sit at home
do not use the internet to communicate
get off your arse and shout for what you believe in
and turn up and shout
because 6m internet clicks are nothing
but 1m people on the streets are something

Do not judge those who disagree with you, try to understand them so they can understand you
