I don't really feel qualified to start a Westminstenders thread but we need a new one....

DUP says it won't vote for deal because it 'drives coach and horses' through Good Friday agreement
Here is the key extract from the DUP’s statement.

These arrangements will become the settled position in these areas for Northern Ireland. This drives a coach and horses through the professed sanctity of the Belfast agreement.

For all of these reasons it is our view that these arrangements would not be in Northern Ireland’s long term interests. Saturday’s vote in parliament on the proposals will only be the start of a long process to get any withdrawal agreement bill through the House of Commons.

Johnson says he has the votes, but we all know what a lying liar he is...

Mr Johnson said to President Juncker this morning he has faith in his ability to convince the majority he needs in the House of Commons. He said based on this agreement and the explanations he intends to give, he has confidence in his ability to win that vote.

What, he's giving them all money?

bellinisurge · 17/10/2019 13:18

The DUP voted against the Good Friday Agreement. So they can fuck off.

ListeningQuietly · 17/10/2019 13:18

THank you and place marking Smile

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/10/2019 13:19

Thanks for the thread. Just got to wait to see what the rest of the parties say now.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/10/2019 13:20

Thanks MShip

Well a hectic day so far in the news (Farage looks glum, haha!) but still don't know whether this WA will go through.

TheMShip · 17/10/2019 13:21

I think this from Ian Dunt is key to the Labour leave MPs:

Imagine you're a pro-deal Labour MP right now. You'd prefer closer relationship, but could settle for this. If you vote for the deal, you get this. If you vote against, you get a general election where this is worst case scenario and a Labour deal is the best case scenario.

Obvs politics doesn't always work this way, but what exactly is the incentive, esp considering the amount of hatred you'd get from your party if you were responsible for seeing it over the line.

PMK.

Also from ID:

Key Commons issue today, as it stands, will be the amendment to the business of the House motion on Saturday's debate. This will be a fight over controlling how events on Saturday play out.

Govt motion would only allow for a 1.5 hour debate with one amendment. Rebel amendment would allow it to be longer and with multiple amendments.

That obviously makes it much easier for MPs to vote on things like a second referendum etc.

Phillip Hammond is a signatory to the rebel amendment. Oliver Letwin says he'll vote for the deal.

Fluffy asked this on the "where's the thread thread":

I'm not sure if my question was answered yesterday (I was at Court all day then asleep by 9!). What is it that the Kinnock amendment says needs to be voted on if no deal through Parliament by Sat? The TM WA or the WAIB?

Here's the text of the amendment:

Clause 1, page 2, line 14, at end, insert “in order to debate and pass a Bill to
implement the agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union under Article 50(2) of the Treaty on European Union, including provisions reflecting the outcome of inter-party talks as announced by the Prime Minister on 21 May 2019, and in particular the need for the United Kingdom to secure changes to the political declaration to reflect the outcome of those inter-party talks.”

Member’s explanatory statement
This amendment would set out as the purpose of seeking an extension under Article 50(3) TEU the passage of a Withdrawal Agreement Bill based on the outcome of the inter-party talks which concluded in May 2019 – see NC1 for contents of the Bill and Amendment XX for text of the request letter to the European Council.

I read this as being the May WA plus what was agreed with Labour when they were still talking to one another.

PMK. Thanks Mship.

NoWordForFluffy · 17/10/2019 13:35

Thank you! Smile

So would it not be better to go for Benn / Kinnock?

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/10/2019 13:35

Oh fuckity fuck fuck. Do we still need to finalise the stash or not?

Basilpots · 17/10/2019 13:35

Cheers M

Micheal Gove just confirmed the Government will ask the EU to say there will be no extension after October 31 & they need to make it clear to British Parliament its this deal or no deal! So much for the Governments promise to comply with the Benn Act

This mirrors what JRM said on Radio 4 and the no10 source Laura K was tweeting earlier. He’s trying to use no deal as a threat against the anti no dealers. Will be tense on Saturday that’s for sure.

TheMShip · 17/10/2019 13:36

I don't think it means they actually have to vote on the WA again though, I found this as well:

Its approval means the piece of legislation designed to block an October 31st no deal Brexit will also require the Prime Minister to state that the reason for requesting an extension from the EU is to pass the Withdrawal Agreement Bill.

So only to say that an extension is to pass that particular bill, not to actually do it?
