I don't really feel qualified to start a Westminstenders thread but we need a new one....

Am I right in thinking this is the worst possible outcome?

Shh, you’re giving the game away. “No Deal” was supposed to be the worst possible outcome, remember?

Except for many on here, a Deal plus continued Tory rule is their real worst possible outcome...

12goldstars · 17/10/2019 14:41

Delurking with a cat to ask if a referendum tagged into Johnson’s WA would likely make any difference now. Is it just no deal or WA, or would a referendum change the EU’s position on an extension?

Hester54 · 17/10/2019 14:41

dreichsky Would you be able to join the EU

Timeywimey10 · 17/10/2019 14:42

Juncker doesn't get to choose.

But are Labour MPs really going to vote for this deal that doesn't guarantee workers' rights, even a little bit (unless you live/work in NI).

Also the transition date hasn't changed, so we'll all have to stockpile again this time next year for a 31 December 2020 transition exit date. Why on earth hasn't that been extended by at least a year? This is all getting really really silly.

MarshaBradyo · 17/10/2019 14:42

They could go with it on Saturday or are people thinking it’s very unlikely

ArseDarkly · 17/10/2019 14:42

Junker saying must be no prolongation- it has to happen now is not the same as EU will not grant any further extension -

I'm sure Johnson has asked them to put pressure on but there's no benefit to them in refusing an extension when they're so close to the possibility of a GE or 2nd Ref which might result in UK staying in.

HeyNotInMyName · 17/10/2019 14:43

Juncker tells me there ‘must be no prolongation- it has to happen now’ - has Johnson persuaded EU to say it’s genuinely this deal or no deal - no delay?

Or they have enough and do not want another 3 years of this shit.

Peregrina · 17/10/2019 14:43

I hope that those Leavers who want to crash out without a deal, don't come on here in two to three years time whinging about the lack of an NHS. The answer will be, "that's what you voted for", even though they didn't think so three and a half years ago. More fool them for believing Johnson then and Johnson now.

ListeningQuietly · 17/10/2019 14:43

Any deal is better than no deal
because whatever they vote on is the START of the negotiations
which will take years

No Deal would cause utter chaos
this deal will just cause chaos

Am resting my voice ready for Saturday Grin

Dusty01 · 17/10/2019 14:44

From Guardian live page:

'There will be no prolongation' - What Juncker said about not allowing an extension

This is what Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European commission, said about ruling out a Brexit extension. He was speaking to reporters on the “red carpet” where leaders speak to journalists as they arrive for the summit.

Asked if he thought the deal would pass parliament, he said: “It has to.”

Then he added:

Anyway, there will be no prolongation.

He went on:

We have concluded a deal. So there is not an argument for delay. It has to be done now.

Thank you to Red and the Mship

Beveren · 17/10/2019 14:45

Any deal is better than no deal

And cancelling the whole idiotic notion is better than either.

ListeningQuietly · 17/10/2019 14:47

Beveren

Dusty01 · 17/10/2019 14:55

Could they vote to Revoke? Is that a possibility?

ListeningQuietly · 17/10/2019 14:57

Hooo
I shall add a red tooth brush on your behalf to my lapel
gosh, who is that weirdo with five toothbrushes pinned to their coat, oh it must be LQ Grin

dreichsky · 17/10/2019 14:58

I'm not a natural supporter of Scots Indy, so not the best person to be answering questions on it. There are others on this thread better placed than I!
But I'm happy to have a shot.
I don't think you can ever rule out the law of unintended consequences, so to that extent it is impossible to be 100% certain what the outcomes of any vote will be.
However the nats drew up reasonably detailed options for the last vote on practical issues. There would be new issues with RUK being out of EU but with proper planning at a sensible pace I would expect they could be managed.
I don't see any reasons why Scotland couldn't join the EU. Rejoining is very different politically to a breakaway country keeping membership which is why Spain is making different noises. Practically we are obviously well set up for joining.
I don't think it would be plain sailing there would be border issues, currency issues and wealth/finance issues.
But fundamentally longer term I think Scotland would be better off being like Ireland rather than being a voiceless add on to a UK which seems to be confused about which century it is living in.

lonelyplanetmum · 17/10/2019 14:59

Thank you to Red and the Mship

prettybird · 17/10/2019 15:00

Hester obviously knows nothing about Scotland and what preparations it did a) in the run up to the Indyref (a 450 page White Paper produced well in advance and sent to every household that wanted it) and the work that it is continuing to do (developing relationships with the EU which is now much mure sympathetic anyway Wink for obvious reasons Grin)

And before she tries the supposedly killer questions

  1. No, Spain won't veto as long as we do it constitutionally (and they have said this) - which is why the Section 30 notice is important
  1. No, there isn't a queue to join the EU, so we can't "go to the back of it" Hmm Accession states can join as soon as they meet the criteria - which as a current member, we currently do. And the Scottish Government plans to continue to meet the requirements - and as an when the UK government imposes laws which diverge, will ensure that it has legislation ready to bring it back in line.
  1. There has already been a currency commission which has outlined what it would be doing with the currency (iirc, setting up a central bank with our share of the reserves of the BoE which is a joint asset WinkI added that bit in Grinand then initially shadowing the pound - as the punt did. The full details will be in any future version of "Scotland's Future". Even if UKIP thinks we lost because we wrote it down, we will not stoop to their level. We want to win because the people of Scotland make their choice on knowledge, not ignorance.
  1. No, we will not be forced to join the Euro straight away. In fact, we wouldn't be allowed to as we need to first show stability with our Central Bank. We will probably need to commit to join the Euro, but if we wanted to, could follow Sweden's lead (hardly a "basket case" economy Wink) and never quite meet the criteria to be allowed to join Grin

And that is as much as I'm going to engage with anyone making Smart Alec comments.

wondering7777 · 17/10/2019 15:01

D- would reject any deal because you will not accept the democratic decision this country has mad.

Unashamedly D I’m afraid. And the last word in your post is quite the Freudian slip, Hester.

yolofish · 17/10/2019 15:04

PMK, non-political dog who would do a far better job than any of our unelected representatives. What do we want ? Tennis balls and swimming! When do want them? NOW!

prettybird A bit touchy are we, so on day 1 what currency would you use, what about a border with a none EU country, what about visas for Scottish people working and living in England and vice versa, what did the white paper say and what will be different this time, so not to be rejected again in your once in a life time referendum
