Westministenders: Parliament Perogies pushing Rats in the Corner

One Opposition MP has just talked in parliament about how little the public understand what Preroguation is and what it meant. She described how one constituent thought it was about perogies.

The Benn Bill is now law and compels Johnson to ask for an extension if we have no deal.

Something that he has said he will die in a ditch to avoid and has suggested he would break the law.

But his options are hugely limited - if he refuses to do so and we no deal accidentally now, he is potentially personally liable for loses. He has no majority and the defeats keep on coming as a result.

Everything coming out now is the behaviour of a man with his back to the wall. The only thing he can do is frame everything as a people v the establishment and hope he survived until a GE. This is a dangerous time - he is now a rat in the corner with nothing to lose.

After Rudd's resignation, not much has got better for Johnson. Several other Tory MPs have signalled they won't stand again. This might mean they decide to rebel as they have nothing to lose. Lord Wellington, who has Tory written through him like a stick of rock, has also resigned the party. Attorney General Buckland hasn't resigned but has made threatening noises if the rule of law is broken.

Proroguation now does stack pressure on Johnson. He has to be the one to make moves and that is going to be difficult for him. However it also gives him time to say and do something without the scrutiny of parliament who have been blowing his arguments and legal assertions to bits with such ease.

Today he has visited Dublin where he stood next to Leo Varadkar who was less than polite nor even particularly diplomatic. The discomfort on Johnson's face and in his body language was very obvious. Varadkar in no uncertain terms said: ""if there is no deal, it will cause disruption for British and Irish people alike", adding "there's no such thing as a clean break, or just getting it done" and that he'd recieved no workable plan.

Tonight are two emergency debates. The first has just concluded about the government's lack of willingness to release documents relating to proroguation and operation yellowhammer.

Its been reported that ministers and civil servants have used private communications to conduct government ministers and this has caused huge concerns and Grieve wants to compel the government to release them. The government have responded saying this is an invasion of privacy. This has raised the accusation that Dominic Cummings personally has rifled through the phone messages of the former treasury communications officer as he sacked her and number 10 were not particularly concerned about her privacy then.

At the same time as the debate the government were briefing the press that they would refuse to comply with demands to release information. Grieve then made the point this was leading to the complete breakdown in trust in government.

David Allen Green said that if the government were to do this we could well be headed into a full blown constitutional crisis. This is the first time he's said he thinks we are actually at this stage.

Grieve was supported by the house by 311 votes to 302 votes ordering the government to release the documents.

The second debate is about the Rule of Law and the government's obligation to obey the Rule of Law.

Yet to come tonight is another vote about an early General Election before parliament pergoies, possibly in the early hours.

In other news John Bercow has decided to stand down at the next election or on the 31st October, which ever is sooner. There are rumours he was about to be deselected by his local conservative association and against convention would have to fight an election to win back his seat. He therefore was merely taking action before he was pushed. This might also be an action to protect parliament from the election of a new speaker after another election, fearing that there might be a hard right takeover which could threaten parliamentary soverignity.

Also this:
Declan Lawn @DecLawn
ERG stalwart Andrew Bridgen on @BBCPM saying the only way he could see a NI only backstop being acceptable is if it was put to an NI-only referendum. Fascinating.

I'll show him that tomorrow as he's now asleep. Yesterday we went for a group walk down a country lane and every time a car approached he'd shout, "ORRRDDDDEEERRRR!! CLEEEEEEEAR THE LOBBY !" so that everyone would move to one side to let the cars pass. I was both proud and embarrassed Grin He wants to know why Bercow is sitting down/kneeling down too which is sweet. I'd gasped as I read the breaking news whilst out and about. "Bercow is standing down!" So he got to asking why he was sitting down and probably wondering why this was news and if I'd finally completely lost the plot. I've told him we'll get a book on volcanoes from the library tomorrow. Reception year is going to be fun 🤣

SunnivaGunne I believe Leo Varadkar got the tone spot on. I believe it wasn't terribly diplomatic though. That's not to say I don't think he was utterly professional. He was.

I think he is totally right to be blunt and to the point whilst stood next to Johnson. Johnson was utterly embarrassed by the raw home truth but there is little he can do and say precisely because its fair comment and Johnson damn well knows it.

Being polite and pussy footing around Johnson, has been done. We are well past that point.

I'd say Leo Varadkar was more civil than polite. But I'm very glad he was. It's perfectly right that he should be making those points, simply to stick up for Irish interests on Irish terms not pandering to the nonsensical bullshit of the English.

Please don't misunderstand my comments.

The Irish absolutely deserve to be pissed at the UK with good reason. You don't owe us politeness at this point.

The Taoiseach was professional, truthful and direct. He referred to BJ as 'prime minister'. Johnson, OTOH, looked like he'd just crawled out of a Temple Bar club into the daylight and called the Taoiseach "Leo" on several occasions. Hugely disrespectful.

lljkk · 09/09/2019 20:53

crud, just found out my MP is standing down. LibDem in Tory marginal :(.

So many people voted for a simple easy Brexit. They won't get what they voted for either. Why aren't they furious marching in the streets?

Julie Birchill who extols chaos as wonderful will be happy. I know there are a few happy Brexiters who will get just what they wanted.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2019 20:54

Thank you Red

lljkk · 09/09/2019 20:55

ps: Wikipedia entry about election of next speaker is interesting. Most the frontrunners are considered allies of Bercow. Next Speaker may not be so different.

PMK thanks Red.

Bercows you son sounds a lot like mine. He turned 5 and started school last week.

He likes to shout about Mr Speaker in the middle of Tesco complete with impression.

Last week he asked who the 'other Boris Johnson' was in the tv.

We've had a week of fart noises.

He loves volcanoes, dinosaurs and space in addition to political impressions.

Just going back to this from last thread:

Apparently someone has quoted an EU source as saying "The EU will never force no-deal on the UK"

hmmhmmhmmhmmhmm

If true, not quite sure what it means. If anything

I hope it means that the EU have a contingency for if Bo Jo plays silly buggers until the 31st, thinking we will crash out at the deadline. Maybe we won't actually leave unless someone from parliament has been and confirmed it's no deal. That would put a cat amongst the pigeons. What will BoJo/ERG do then?

(I am so embarassed to be british at the moment)

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/09/2019 21:02

I can understand the frustration of the leave voters, the vote was to leave. However, part of the problem was that in the pathetic campaigns run by both sides nobody ever really spelt out what leave meant.

Furthermore, TM didn’t appear to attempt to build a consensus around the WA. I strongly suspect because she feared sabotage from extreme remainers and No Deal Brexiteers. Whatever she presented was going to be hated by some people.

The ERG, BJ and Cummings are vandalising the constitution for their own purposes without giving a second thought to the precedent they are setting. This is deeply shocking and Parliament had to act.

The opposition parties cannot claim to respect the referendum yet have voted down the only available deal multiple times. The deal was flawed but I strongly doubt that it would have been anything other than a springboard for further negotiations.

Not British politics finest hour

Outsomnia · 09/09/2019 21:03

If only the UK had a polished, well turned out, eloquent and professional PM/Taoiseach like Leo Varadkar. Honestly the contrast between both of them today drove home how horribly disrespectful and uninterested Johnson was at the presser. And what a plonker he really is. It is just awful stuff for the world stage (apart from Trump) to witness.

Anyway, I don't think LV was anything other than direct. He is standing up for his people and his country who will suffer greatly from decisions made by UK Government. Who could blame him.

But few in UK care about ROI (many in fact think it is still part of the UK). And good on those who actually do care, and do realise that ROI is an Independent State.

The eyes of the world were on this presser. Guess who came across the better?

David Allen Green@davidallengreen
If you had asked any of these Tory MPs a year or so ago about the Rule of Law they would have trotted out same few misty-eyed lines:

"common law"
"Magna Carta"
"Mother of Parliaments"
"Burke!"

But it was all bullshit

They drop these principles the moment they are inconvenient

^NEW: @BorisJohnson is in the MPs dining room tonight, a place May rarely visited.
But guess who he's sitting next to and chatting to?^
Charlie Elphicke and Nigel Dodds, watched over by PPS Alex Burghart.

Oo that reminds me.

Didn't Charlie Elphickes court case start Friday??

De lurking to ask...

Can anyone more learned than me say whether the law passed today prevents Boris from taking us out with no deal before 31 October? Perhaps while Parliament is prorogued?

I’m worried. My son is dependent on sodium valproate which is on the meds list. Without it, he could have breakthrough seizures that may take his life.

Thanks to all the regular contributors on these threads. I read every day and share what I learn.
