Can remainers tell me why you wouldn't vote for Corbyn in a GE?

Discussing Brexit with centre right friend who is adament despite voting Labour in previous elections she would never vote for Corbyn. When pressed she mentions links to trade unions but can't tell me why that's a bad thing.

I don't love Corbyn but I would vote for him over the absolute mess that is the Tories at the moment. Why for remain/Labour voters right now is he so politically toxic?

He's a fucking useless twat. Correction, he's a useful idiot for those attempting to legitimise all kind of scumbags who use "causes" as an excuse for being violent bastards. I'm old and I knew his type for years poisoning the Labour Party. I don't need the Daily Fail to point this out.
He claims not to realise how anti-Semitic Labour has become. I vowed never to vote Labour while he is leader.

And having thought about it, I would still vote Labour with that contemptible twat as leader if it was the only way to stop No Deal.

ColaFreezePop · 06/09/2019 06:53

I wouldn't vote for Corbyn as he's a poor leader and poor local MP.

If he wasn't a poor leader he would have dealt with the anti-Semitism in his party and other issues the PLP have brought to him. He's also pro-Brexit and also unable to talk to the media. You hear and see more of the shadow chancellor than him, when it should be the opposite way round.

I know people who lived in his constituency and he was unable to help them with the problems that when they have moved other MPs, from both the Conservatives and Labour, have dealt with quickly and decisively. The excuse from his flunkies was always that the person should use other channels e.g. the council, government department, when the problem was the relevant person/department/organisation was refusing to deal with the issue. When you get your MP involved you at least get an answer.

Some of these people will still vote Labour as they like their local Labour MP just not Corbyn. They know that Corbyn, like Milliband, will not do a Blair and attempt to win over floating and Tory voters.in other constituencies. Therefore they don't think he will be PM so we will have a hung parliament.

Luckily for me I'm in a Tory/Lib Dem marginal so I if I voted Labour I would allow the Tories in, which happened last time. My Tory MP, who I think is dim, actually is a decent local MP even though he has a small majority.

MysteryTripAgain · 06/09/2019 06:59

Polls indicate the people fear Corbyn being PM more than they fear no deal.

So if law is passed that prevents no deal should another law not be passed that prevents Corbyn from ever becoming PM?

AnnaMariaDreams · 06/09/2019 07:00

It’s not really Corbyn as much as that Labour are just too far to the left for me.
I don’t want higher taxes. I believe (and work in) private healthcare. I use private education and don’t want to pay more tax on it when I also pay a lot of tax already to fund state schools and the NHS. I have a rental property- a very nice well maintained one!- and I don’t want the tenant having the right to buy it off me if they feel like it. I don’t want inheritance tax raised.
I am a Remainer but I think my values are conservative. We

macaronip1e · 06/09/2019 07:01

In terms of Brexit, their position is an ambiguous fudge. I think last official position was they want to leave but maintain as close a relationship with EU as possible (leave in name only) - though I think they’ve also said in a second referendum they’d campaign remain. I find the lack of clarity, conviction and meaningful contribution to the debate (other than just disagreeing with the government) incredibly frustrating.

macaronip1e · 06/09/2019 07:02

By “they” I mean Labour

randomsabreuse · 06/09/2019 07:02

Literally he's not my constituency so I "can't".

Tactically it would be pointless in my constituency- very safe Tory with Lib Dem as 2nd place candidate.

In general he is a weak debater, has been ineffective in opposition against a moribund Tory party and is a very reluctant remainer.

eurochick · 06/09/2019 07:03

As a centrist remainer there is no way I would vote for a party led by a far left Brexiteer at heart.

MIdgebabe · 06/09/2019 07:06

COrbyn does no5 stand in my area so o can’t vote for him whatever. The labour guy here is very good so o would vote for him.

Random. Does it not annoy you that your opinion does not really get taken into account simply because of where you live? Less democratic than the Eu parliament elections

ImpracticalCape · 06/09/2019 07:08

He's a leaver.
He's a terrible leader
Despite the open goals this government have displayed he has been totally invisible.

I have voted Labour for 28 years. I will never vote Labour while he is at the helm.

jasjas1973 · 06/09/2019 07:10

The MSM has done a brilliant number on Corbyn, ably assisted by his own past.

They did similar to Kinnock Brown and Miliband and if Starmer or Cooper were leader, they'd do them over too....and we'd all be shouting "can't vote for Labour with that idiot x y or z as their leader"

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 07:10

Because they don’t understand that we live in a parliamentary democracy, not a presidency.

rookiemere · 06/09/2019 07:11

Inheritance tax plans are absolutely punitive. For me it would be like a turkey voting for Christmas.
Besides I don't even know if Labour are solidly Remain - they seem to flip flop every day.

I would vote for a moderate Left leaning party, who had a good definitive plan around Brexit - at this point I'd even take a well thought out Exit plan. My preference is for a right leaning party who are strongly pro Remain so Lib Dem it is ( except I'm in Scotland so I need to be a bit tactical as don't want SNP)

A Labour/Lib Dem/Green alliance would b much more acceptable to me and likely best for the country, but of course you can't vote for that.

Herocomplex · 06/09/2019 07:12

His politics are an out-moded brand of socialism, the sort a sixth-former believes in, particularly in how he sees the UK economy. He’s allowed anti-semitism to be widely practised. He’s failed to challenge the tories at key points in the last three years. He doesn’t believe in the EU model.

BrittleJoys · 06/09/2019 07:13

Well, is she even in Jeremy Corbyn’s constituency?

Bluntness100 · 06/09/2019 07:15

Because many of his policies are fantasies we will never get in, from making landlords sell their homes to their tenants, to abolishing tuition fees on, through to unattainable tax policies, they are ill thought through, and cynical fantasies to target sections of society and get their votes.

There is also significant issues with anti semitism in the Labour Party, and issues surrounding Corbyn himself with terrorist links.

Surprised anyone could vote for that or could justify it to themselves. Plus as a pp, said he's a useless twat.

sandyfoot · 06/09/2019 07:15

Previous labour supporter here. I will not vote labour under him.

  1. he, at best, has not done enough to stamp out anti-semitism, if he isn't an anti-Semite himself...

  2. his stance on brexit. He is a Brexiteer at heart and I could never support a party who has done so little over the last 3 years to end this madness.

  3. his general persona. Literally can't bear watching him in interviews. He comes across as such an arrogant, patronising twat. I could not imagine him representing uk.

Bring on a new leader. I miss Labour.

RaggieDolls · 06/09/2019 07:16

Why would a remainer vote Labour? Labour aren't a remain party and there are several that are. I will vote for a party with a clear message in respect of EU Exit.

Whoateallthecheese · 06/09/2019 07:17

He's a Brexiteer.

Charlieiscool · 06/09/2019 07:18

Corbyn is always on the fence. If he had been in favour of Remain at the referendum he might have tipped the outcome but he was uncertain as usual. No one knows what he stands for.
Momentum and the antisemitism are a disgrace. I am angry that Labour are so rubbish now that they are not able to look appealing even with the mess that is the Tories.

Dljlr · 06/09/2019 07:19

I don't understand the pp argument that the MSM has 'done a number' on Corbyn. I'm in love with a migrant and Corbyn has done utterly fuck all to ensure he has the right to stay in a country he's worked in for the past 7 years. He's shouty and obnoxious, largely invisible (will he ever be interviewed on R4 I wonder?), tolerates anti Semitism, poses for happy snaps with the vile Madigan and is managing the unthinkable by being less electable than the Tories during their worst succession of premiers in recent history. I cannot abide Boris but Corbyn is no kind of alternative.

Redwinestillfine · 06/09/2019 07:21

Momentum

Tolleshunt · 06/09/2019 07:22

He’s not a remainer! I’m only interested in parties that are clearly remain.

Also, as somebody on the centre left, who used to vote Labour, I have been disgusted by the party’s antisemitism, and think McDonnell would be an absolute disaster as Chancellor. I would potentially happily vote Labour again if Corbyn and McDonnell went, and their policies were overhauled.

Herocomplex · 06/09/2019 07:22

Also he’s just not very bright.

MysteryTripAgain · 06/09/2019 07:23

Corbyn is aware of what people think.

That is why he is shying away from a General Election.
