Can remainers tell me why you wouldn't vote for Corbyn in a GE?

Discussing Brexit with centre right friend who is adament despite voting Labour in previous elections she would never vote for Corbyn. When pressed she mentions links to trade unions but can't tell me why that's a bad thing.

I don't love Corbyn but I would vote for him over the absolute mess that is the Tories at the moment. Why for remain/Labour voters right now is he so politically toxic?

It’s significant, I think that the ideas about private landlords and share transfer, neither of which are actual Labour Party policy have suddenly emerged over the last couple of weeks- just in time to fuel the “Labour is the same as Communist” rhetoric. I wonder where that came from? And I wonder why the media appears to be largely silent on Conservative policies that are having an appalling impact on the poor, while the merest hint of anything that might impact top earners/money owners and it’s headline news!

Fatshedra · 06/09/2019 08:26

I wonder why he can't step down. Keir Starmer, though he seems a bit of a drip, could step in. No probs.
JC got in, imv, because he promised to change the uni fees and lots of young people voted for him, that might happen again. Now Kinnock, I think it was, was wanting to lower the vote to include 16 year olds. Jings, Seems danagerous, 16 year olds have such a twitter lead black white view of the world.

OtraCosaMariposa · 06/09/2019 08:27

I think labour are foolish in not utilising Kier Starmer

I agree with this. He's very competent.

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 08:29

I am hoping that Kier Starmer is biding his time......

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:31

I don't mind Keir Starmer but it's Momentum and O'Donnell who are the tricky ones and they are so entrenched now.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/09/2019 08:32

Nobody can vote for Corbyn unless they live in his constituency.
Pedantry aside, I wouldn't vote for him because I support another (left) party. I also need to vote for a Remain party, which Labour is not.

Neolara · 06/09/2019 08:33

Fiona Bruce on question time yesterday, "So Emily Thorburry, can you help me understand Labour's Brexit position. You say if you get into power, Labour will go and negotiate a new deal with the EU. You will then have a referendum on which you will put your deal and remain to the people. You've said Labour will campaign for remain at that point. Does that mean you will be actively campaigning against the deal it just negotiated? "

Emily Thornbury looks as if she wishes ground would swallow her up..........

Labour has no clear position on the biggest political issue of the century. That's a pretty big problem.

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 08:41

Is that an actual transcript of what Bruce said? Because it seems perfectly straightforward to me-why couldn’t Thornberry respond?

Oranginna · 06/09/2019 08:48

How can you defend that Labour position? If they are going to campaign for remain why would they negotiate a good deal? They would negotiate a bad deal so that remain seems the better option.

Dapplegrey · 06/09/2019 08:49

I don't mind paying more tax actually.

I’ve quite often read on mn posters saying they don’t mind, or indeed, would like, to pay more tax.
There must be a way surely of paying more tax if you want to?

CaptainWarbeck · 06/09/2019 08:50

Okay I wrote the thread title in a hurry - you're all right obviously and it should've read wouldn't vote for Labour while led by Corbyn.

Reading replies with interest.

“If they are going to campaign for remain why would they negotiate a good deal? They would negotiate a bad deal so that remain seems the better option.”
Well, I couldn’t that Labour position!

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:51

I really don't think there is. Unless I start gambling!

Fridakahlofan · 06/09/2019 08:52

Corbyn has proved that he doesn’t care about stopping Brexit so I have no faith that he will aid the cause.
He is also pretty silent on the environment.
I have always voted labour but would only do so if it seemed to tactically make sense in my constituency. The Lib Dem’s have promised a second referendum and prioritised the environment and so they have my support now.

LadyKylieShagworthy · 06/09/2019 09:00

He is too arrogant/pig headed/selfish to realise that HE is the problem with the Labour Party and the reason so many life long labour voters won't vote labour in next GE. He should step down for the good of the party/country and let Starmer do the job.
Oh, and Diane Abbot is a total joke and lost all credibility with her cock up on the police figures.

IfNot · 06/09/2019 09:01

I think squee nails it for me with the pensions thing. Its a good illustration of badly thought through policies.
I am a proper old school union supporting left winger . I agree with nationalising the railways and don't think that basic needs like public transport or healthcare should be private. But every time I hear how labour are planning to implement these types of policies I just do a head-desk at how lacking in actual smart planning or economic sense they are.
Even a small business owner can see so many flaws in these big ideas. It's not that, for example, we don't need better housing policy or a national public transport system that is affordable, it's that we need people who also understand business to implement these ideas realistically.
One of the problems with politicians in general is that they haven't had proper jobs. They are clueless. I would like to see a rule that you can't become an MP or councillor without 5 years in either paid work or volunteering outside of politics.
Corbyn seems to me like the absolute epitome of a career politician, with no common sense or experience of normal life for most people.

timshelthechoice · 06/09/2019 09:03

Because I am an SNP voter.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/09/2019 09:04

Mainly because in my constituency the only one with a chance of ousting our Tory PM is the Lib Dem candidate, and I want to get as many Tories out as possible.

But I don't think Corbyn is a Remainer, tbh. I'm usually a Labour voter but I suspect a Corbyn government will still try to take us out of Europe. They'd almost have - many of the usual Labour strongholds voted Leave.

Manontry · 06/09/2019 09:21

IfNot very good post.

CleopatraTomato · 06/09/2019 09:29

I always used to be a Labour voter.
If Labour want to attack the rich they will lose. The rich vote, often, (I'd guess), the poor are less likely to for whatever reason.

For society to work everyone has to contribute and everyone has to benefit. We all have a stake. It doesn't feel like that now and making the rich pay more tax will only make that worse. as will further isolating the poor.

Labour has lost its way so in my view, as a party, it is unelectable.

MockersthefeMANist · 06/09/2019 09:31

He isn't standing in my constituency, where a Labour vote is always a wasted vote.

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 09:34

Just look up his and John McDonnell’s financial plans for this country. The hypocrisy of it

CleopatraTomato · 06/09/2019 09:44

Oh and he isn't a Remainer.

rookiemere · 06/09/2019 09:45

Cleopatra I agree with much of what you're saying, but I would also say that Labour are actively targeting the middle class rather than the rich. The rich are well off enough to find loop holes and weather the storm, it's those of us in the middle who resent being further squeezed.

Also in terms of who votes - well it tends to be the elderly as they have more permanence of residence and also have organised postal votes, so much more likely to actually follow through. Tories - well certainly under May - pandered to this rump of the population - I don't see labour recognising them so much.

totallyrandom · 06/09/2019 09:48

I normally vote Labour but Corbyn's policies are just too left for me. I don't see them as being workable or being realistic. I am very centrist really even on the Brexit question. Staying in the EU always made sense to be because I felt we already had the best DEAL possible. I suspect we might leave but end up in a very similar position albeit with no say at the table. Probably that is the best outcome for the EU because they still get our money without our constant dissident voice (which is a shame really as every monolith needs a dissident to make it question itself somewhat). I really hope the Lib Dems join up with lots of other moderates/perhaps the Greens/independents leaving the extreme views currently festering in both the Labour and Conservative party behind so I can vote for them. One good thing might come out of this Brexit fiasco. Literally everyone I know feels the same way as I do - we cannot vote Labour or Conservative at the moment. There is a real hole for a moderate sensible party
