Can remainers tell me why you wouldn't vote for Corbyn in a GE?

Discussing Brexit with centre right friend who is adament despite voting Labour in previous elections she would never vote for Corbyn. When pressed she mentions links to trade unions but can't tell me why that's a bad thing.

I don't love Corbyn but I would vote for him over the absolute mess that is the Tories at the moment. Why for remain/Labour voters right now is he so politically toxic?

I would vote Lib Dem because they're a pro-remain party, Labour aren't. Also live in a very Tory area where Lib Dems are the second party so a vote for Labour would be wasted here.

IfNot · 06/09/2019 07:59

I might vote for the labour man in my area (and it's always a man). Individual MPs are important and the good ones can be very effective representatives for their constituents. The wider Labour party is a fucking shambles and Corbyn is a weaselly, incompetent idiot with no better understanding of economics than a tomato, but I reckon his time is almost up.
It's astonishing to me how bad senior politicians are! I can think of at least 5 people I know personally who would be 100 times better than Corbyn at leading the Labour party, but I guess these days only certain types want to go into politics, and thats the problem really isn't it?

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:00

Labour hate me and people like me and make that very clear. I'd be mad to vote for them.

rookiemere · 06/09/2019 08:00

I think the more obvious question is why isn't Lib Dem as a clear Remainer party, picking up a higher percentage of the vote.

People are still blaming them for the coalition and tuition fees, when at this point in time I feel we face far bigger challenges and it would be very petty and self sabotaging to not vote for them due to historical issues that they have apologised for.

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:01

Also our local Labour MP is practically non existent, not sure if we even have one tbh.

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 08:01

“Labour hate me and people like me and make that very clear. I'd be mad to vote for them.”
Why do you think that?

Tolleshunt · 06/09/2019 08:01

Yes, I agree generally Bertrand re current policies being moderate, but I think many will have a strong suspicion, knowing Corbyn and McDonnell’s history, that those quite mild policies would change to become a lot more hardline if they were in power.

The latest proposals about right to buy rented private property hints at that. The idea that Labour could seriously erode the common law principles we operate in the UK regarding private property will be in a lot of voters’ minds.

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:03

I'm a business owner, landowner, well off and privately educate, due to inherit a large amount of money. I am not a Labour voter, although I will vote Lib Dem as I am also a remainer.

museumum · 06/09/2019 08:03

I think Corbyn is a disaster but my local labour mp is a good one so I will vote for him whatever that means for the final outcome.

Herocomplex · 06/09/2019 08:05

AnnabellaFagina thirteen out of the twenty six members of the shadow cabinet are women.

kjhkj · 06/09/2019 08:06

He's a poor leader, he is too far left. I am a strong remainer but traditionally a conservative voter. I don't want even more tax, vat on school fees, land taxes etc.

I think labour are foolish in not utilising Kier Starmer. Many moderate conservatives would be far more comfortable with him at the helm.

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 08:07

“The latest proposals about right to buy rented private property hints at that”
They aren’t proposals.

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:08

It's all very well saying Corbyn's manifesto is meek and mild and fair. Momentum and O'Donnell will change that if they get in with any sort of majority.

peppaporkysandwich · 06/09/2019 08:09

Anything's Better than BoJo imo

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:09

And they have to. It's what they are. They aren't moderate.

I don't mind paying more tax actually.

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 08:09

There are plenty of rich people who have a sense of social responsibility which means they think paying tax is a good idea.

Artesia · 06/09/2019 08:12

Natal women, or ones with penises, beards and XY chromosomes? Because under his self Identification policies, both are equally women. He’d be able to claim 50:50 representation in Cabinet without a single ovary in the room....

Manontry · 06/09/2019 08:13

I have said I don't mind paying more tax. But I am not fair game.

Tolleshunt · 06/09/2019 08:14

They aren’t proposals.

Aren’t they? What are they then? I thought they had been reported as such. I may have misread, though, as my mind/political worries are largely on Brexit at the moment, and I have mostly made up my mind to vote LibDem in any forthcoming election.

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 08:15

And people who won’t vote Labour because of gender issues are deluding themselves if they think any of the other parties are any different.

squee123 · 06/09/2019 08:16

Because his policies are ill thought through and would wreck the country. Take for example the proposal to transfer 10% of compant shares to the workers. Sounds lovely? Well bear in mind that one of the biggest groups of shareholders in the country (either directly or via funds) are pension funds. Our pension funds. So they'll strip up to 10% of the value from our pension funds. They just don't think through the consequences of their actions.

It will also make the UK an extremely unattractive jurisdiction to invest in if your investment can be raided by the government, so overseas investors will go elsewhere. This would be a disaster when coupled with Brexit.

I hate the Tory party right now and particularly BoJo, but I also don't want to inflict 5 years of far left lunacy on our fragile economy.

Herocomplex · 06/09/2019 08:17

Indeed Bertrand both the LD’s and the Greens have got some serious issues for me.

kjhkj · 06/09/2019 08:17

I pay 50% tax already. I have a sense of social responsibility thanks

Artesia · 06/09/2019 08:18

Agree, BertrandRussell, which is why I contacted all my local candidates on the issue. One ignored my question, one effectively called me bigoted and one met me, discussed the issues, and gave me assurances as to how they would vote on certain gender legislation. Guess which one gets my vote....

SymphonyofShadows · 06/09/2019 08:23

As PP have said, I can’t vote for him because he’s not my local MP. I’m a Remainer and Labour voter but would vote LD in a GE in order to oust the expenses cheat Anne Main. Labour have no chance here, but I don’t fear Corbyn.
