Brexit

Do any of the people who laughed and rolled their eyes at those of us stockpiling six months ago care to comment?

I seem to remember some rather scathing comments. I wonder how many are quietly buying a few extra bits each week and smugly congratulating themselves on being prepared. Forgetting the scorn and contempt.

I’m perplexed, though, as to why he thinks Brexit/no deal will help

Because it will bring everything to a head.

As others are finding you can't get prescriptions now. He thinks that they are stockpiling and only when we leave will any form of deal will be done. Then we can return to normal.

Otherwise it will just be a slow decline

berlinbabylon · 03/09/2019 15:53

I am not stockpiling because I do not believe the situation will be one of stockpile or starve to death (and if it is, then stockpilers should be upping their home security systems to protect their stashes...). It is impossible to stockpile the fresh food that will be the real issue when it comes to shortages, anyway. Medicines I am worried about, but I can't stockpile for illnesses I might have, and I have nothing wrong with my health at this time! And I certainly have no intention of stockpiling highly flammable petrol in my home. If we have massive problems, half of them will be caused by people's ridiculous behaviour, stockpiling random stuff because they are panicking, when that will do nothing to prevent chaos that can only be resolved by government action, not by individuals stockpiling random stuff. If this is not sorted out at the national level, we are all going to suffer chaos, regardless of personal stockpiling

I agree with a lot of this, but my approach to stockpiling has been in terms of "luxuries" in the main - ie cosmetics and toiletries I like, wine, coffee, and then some tinned fruit and multivitamins in case there is a shortage of fresh fruit and veg. Also things I need for my hobbies so both ds and I have running shoes stashed for when our existing ones wear out. I am not stockpiling for major shortages or the apocalypse - as you rightly point out, if things are that bad, a stockpile isn't gong to help. Like you I am in good health so don't need much in the way of medicine but am eg prone to thrush so have made sure I have a spare tube of cream. DH has his favourite razors. It's about maintaining some semblance of a pleasant lifestyle.

kjhkj · 03/09/2019 15:56

Several commentators have suggested that the very careful terminology, “food they need” (and he has previously said “calories they need” too) suggests rationing.

I also picked up on that wording. As a lawyer it really jumps out as carefully chosen wording they've been told to use.

TheBigBallOfOil · 03/09/2019 16:02

Of course. If no interruptions to supply were expected they would say so.

HeronLanyon · 03/09/2019 23:14

Well after tonight’s vote (thank god no deal has receded somewhat) I had a momentary fleeting thought about my no deal Brexit stash. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I am bloody well not doing it a third time if things now go askew and we have this all again months down the line. Will hold it for a bit, use some and donate most of it to food banks. No energy for a third stash.

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/09/2019 23:26

No Deal is the equivalent of going to view a house you like and telling the vendor you love their house and you are going to buy it at any cost.

I actually think we weren't going to leave without a deal we had another 2 months and having no Deal on the table would have concentrated everyone's mind

Now we have handed the upper hand in any negotiation to the other side

Utterly ridiculous.

Someone earlier asked me why I was embarrassed at voting Remain.

HeronLanyon · 03/09/2019 23:37

oliver agree fully. If I can push the analogy further I’ve always thought the leave option was like you offering asking price which is accepted, the vendor had lied in the property questionnaire about fundamental things. You’re locked in. On further visits you sattt to notice cracks and damp (some of which had been covered up by vendor) and anfloor falls in due to woddworm. You’re not allowed to get a survey. No renegotiation. Forced to pay full asking price. Family facing financial ruin from purchase.

Manontry · 04/09/2019 07:50

If we take no deal off the table you will definitely be needing your stash.

The EU will bleed us dry.

HeronLanyon · 04/09/2019 07:54

Oh bugger. Yes. Woken up to yet more cold hard reality of this mess.

Kazzyhoward · 04/09/2019 07:58

Now we have handed the upper hand in any negotiation to the other side

Some Remainer MPs have been deliberately sabotaging the process for the last 2 years to ensure the deal we get is so bad we'd Remain.

For a good deal, "no deal" always should have been the default option. Having it off the table was complete madness, but of course, it's what the Remainers have wanted all along.

Parliament is a disgrace. If there is a GE soon, I'd like some new rule saying all existing MPs are barred from standing again as it's they who have brought Parliament into disrepute.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 04/09/2019 08:09

Why would they care if we crash out, other than being sorry we are destroying our economy? They have spent 3 years preparing - unlike us - and won't be affected very much, certainly not for long. They have 26 other countries to trade with just in the EU and are one of the strongest trading blocks in the world.

Cutting off your own nose to spite your face is not a negotiating tactic.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 04/09/2019 08:11

"no deal" always should have been the default option.

Destroying our own economy for a good number of years should be the default option? Shock

MrsA2015 · 04/09/2019 08:19

As a south Londoner I laugh in the face of stockpiling. The idiots rounds here panic but when it snows and clear tescos and Aldi’s whilst driving past a massive Turkish and Afro Caribbean supermarket that has EVERYTHING. Even had the old veg delivery companies offering dairy and bread “during the shortage due to weather crisis” shop smart and perhaps change eating habits to ease the suffering of shortagesHmm as for medicine that’ll be a diabolical mess of the government to let that go tits up, perhaps rationing on insulin will prompt a lot of the type 2s to actually change theirs with diet ( looking at you MIL) OBVIOUSLY not aimed at those who need it to survive. Brexit is a shambles driven by racism , that’s all it ever was.

IDontBelieveYou · 04/09/2019 08:28

No deal HAS been on the table for the last three years. How many times did we hear “no deal is better than a bad deal”.

Threatening no deal doesn’t work because it hurts us more than it hurts them. It also doesn’t work because our desired deal hurts the EU more than no deal does.

If threatening no deal was going to work, it would have worked by now.

Ilikethisone · 04/09/2019 12:16

If threatening no deal was going to work, it would have worked by now.

That's the point. It wouldnt have worked by now. Because of the opposition.

Personally, I agree. In the original Brexit campaign and vote, it should have been pitched as No deal would be the default if they couldnt get a deal.

Getting a deal has definitely been negatively impacted by the remainers who are fighting to stop it, by any means nessacary.

I wish we werent leaving but think lots if politicians have caused damage to deal negotiations.

S1naidSucks · 04/09/2019 12:24

perhaps rationing on insulin will prompt a lot of the type 2s to actually change theirs with diet. FFS! What a pig ignorant comment. Not every person with type 2 diabetes has it because of weight and those that do have it as a result of weight, often have emotional/mental health problems that cause over eating.

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/09/2019 12:30

How would we know the negotiations wouldn't have worked hysterical remainers who I presume have never haggled for anything in their lives never gave it a chance.

Remoaners wanted leaving to be shit and now they have got their wish.

As for Corbyn getting in. Will the last person leaving the UK turn the lights off

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/09/2019 12:45

perhaps rationing on insulin will prompt a lot of the type 2s to actually change theirs with diet

Do type 2s take insulin. Most take pills.

DP is a diabetic and he wanted no deal to be left on the table .

The way things are at the moment he thinks taking no deal off the table is going to harm more people.
Not every one is on the ball to pester the doctor and pharmacist to get their medication
He was so pissed off. He is so done with begging for prescriptions.

eenymeenyminyme · 04/09/2019 12:49

I totally get stockpiling by people with medical or other needs which means they have to ensure a constant supply of certain foods or medicines.

Other than that, stockpiling leads to shortages and I won't do it. I will make do with whatever the shops have in stock, might even end up trying new stuff!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 04/09/2019 12:56

Of course it's our (remainers) fault the Brexit negotiations are going to shit. Rather than the 52% who voted to leave 🙄

bellinisurge · 04/09/2019 13:24

"I will make do with whatever the shops have in stock, might even end up trying new stuff!"

  1. How has me slowly get extra bits over several months caused a shortage now while supply chains are still working.
  2. How jolly for you. Assume you don't have other family members with restricted diets etc? Or even fussy kids.
eenymeenyminyme · 04/09/2019 13:30

Assume you don't have other family members with restricted diets etc?

I literally just said I totally get stockpiling by people with medical or other needs which means they have to ensure a constant supply of certain foods or medicines. Confused

Manontry · 04/09/2019 13:40

I will make do with whatever the shops have in stock, might even end up trying new stuff

I'm struggling to understand why this isn't a good attitude to have.

MrsA2015 · 04/09/2019 13:42

@S1naidSucks I said a lot of not ALL. I’m FT carer and have been at the rough end of caring for MIL who has type 2 insulin dependant BECAUSE SHE HAS NO SELF CONTROL. she’s just had a gastric sleeve to “help” and still refuses to alter diet, roll on throwing up all the time. And yes for years it’s been “let her eat xyz then take more insulin”. It’s me against 50 years of poor diet and no mental help, All other avenues have been exhausted hence the gastric sleeve. I think you’ll find the pig ignorant ones are the selfish people who either don’t bother to use the help theyre given and the drs who’d rather dole out insulin instead of telling the harsh truth to patients who need a kick down to the gym. YES I know not everyone is the same I’m going based on the scenarios I know of.

berlinbabylon · 04/09/2019 14:14

Threatening no deal doesn’t work because it hurts us more than it hurts them. It also doesn’t work because our desired deal hurts the EU more than no deal does

This. And there is a simple solution to all of this - tell the DUP to stick their GFA-destroying nonsense, and put the border in the sea (it's kind of there already, given you need photo ID to travel within the CTA, even on ferries now, so it's not a massive leap to do some customs checks too). Or the whole of the UK stays in the EEA and CU and we all move on.
